Wear & Tear in Free Flight, is it overly done?

Featured Replies

Genuine question as I've never inspected an aircraft after flight(!), but is the very cool wear & tear effect overly done in 2024? The props and engine housing in the first pics was after a mere 1hr flight in CAVOK conditions (i.e. no rain or anything). The final pic of the bug splats was after 40minutes flying at 5000agl mainly over the sea, it got "worse" as the flight went on which was cool but I could've done with a car racing style windscreen tear off as it was highly noticeable!

Loving the effects, but are they a bit OTT for such short flights? (bug splats DA62, default MSFS24 aircraft)

Oh, dear God......bug splats? I assume that is an option that can be switched off?

makes me remember my old flying days...more cleaning bug corpses then flying... 🤭😂

to be honest I never realized this in the sim, I guess I don't fly default enough.

BTW: How do you clean this?...in MSFS2024, I mean?

Dunno, I'd rather have too much than crystal clean glass after a flight but then I don't fly IRL so no idea if it's too much oir not...hence the question.

Simply start a new flight, it doesn't carry over in Free light but I do recall a Wishlist mentioning Wear & Tear for Free Flight for default aircraft (much like what the A2A planes currently have).

As @McDaniel notes, it's common to have a pretty splattered windshield after just a few trips round the pattern during the warm half of the year. If it's accumulating at 5,000 feet over the sea that seems a bit unusual though. Not sure to which extent the sim takes environmental conditions into account for this effect...

Edit: Leading edges and all other surfaces that face into the relative wind get splattered too, of course. High-performance gliders have special bug wipers that can be operated from the cockpit to clean the leading edges in flight and maintain optimum aerodynamic performance.

Pics are really dark for me but I think the dirt and bugs is caked on too quick.

Pretty convinced this is a SU4 Beta thing as tonight I flew the Caravan (which I have a lot of hours in) for the first time in quite awhile, certainly noticed a lot more bug splats on the windows after 30minutes than I ever have before. By no means off putting, but very noticeable.

I remember it well from my flying days but it is a little overdone in the sim. I'd rather have it as it is than not have it at all though.

I would rather not have it at all, so I hope that there is an option to turn it off.

It's a 2024 thing, so you don't need to worry 😉

That's the problem. If I decide to switch to MSFS 2024, then I need to know that I can turn this off.

You aren't going to switch to 2024. Not until two months before 2028 comes along when you finally decide to risk it all and get a PC from 2021. And then you will enjoy telling us all why you won't be switching to 2028 🙂

You can't turn it off.

Then I guess that St Mawgan was right.
