Just Ordered New Pimax Crystal Light

Featured Replies

Hi all. Well, after experiencing what positive difference a display port VR headset makes vs WiFi, even if only by having tested with a Reverb G2, I went and ordered Crystal Light. I have a 7800X3D and a 4090 with 64GB of 6000mhz memory. Not the king of the hill anymore but I think I will do okay with the headset and that system.

I downloaded Pimax Play software, but of course I have no headset yet.

Any suggestions or tips for setting it up would be greatly appreciated.

I will list my Quest 3 for sale tomorrow with lots of extras to recoup some of the money spent on the Crystal Light.

All setup advice welcome :-).

Hi Rob,

Good on you mate! One tip for me would be set up your preferences as to foveated rendering, frame rate etc IN SIM not in Pimax Play... certainly dont do it in both...

Once you get you headset we can give you the finer set up points - youll love it!

Im just using now the unreleased Pimax Play v2 software and its great.. hopefully released soon...

You have make a mistake ,   one in VR , you never come back  🙂

in pimax play , you can set the refresh rate and limit FPS to half the refresh rate. AT 37fps it is really smooth .

you can play also with rendering scale in pimax.  In VFR or with light plane, i use 0.9 rendering and get around 40Fps with a 9800x3d and 5070ti 16Go vram.

but with heavy plane like A350 , i ve got to reduce to 0.8 to stay at 37Fps when starting in a major airport.  But to get in Eathrow in vr with a A350 , full traffic and ultra cloud , it is .... very nice 🙂

the opposite for me: I just ordered a Quest 3 (just to check out their AR games) in addition to the Pimax Crystal Light (strictly for MSFS) that I already had for 1 year. we have nearly the same hardware and I can tell you: I don't tweak anymore and now since SU4 we have Foveated rendering and that has improved fps yet again to a totally smooth experience for me. 45 fps in mostly GA environments is plenty as long as frame times are very constant (i.e. fps stays constant)

the link cable for the Quest 3, is that only for charging or also for data transfers?

I can never go back to 2D, EGNT in VR at low visibility fog is incredible.

60-130 fps. no CPU overclocking.

very nice.

You can do either - depending on the spec of the cable and the set up.  But personally - although dependant upon having a decent 5GHz Wireless signal - I've never been able to match the excellent wireless Virtual Desktop results with a link cable.  It sort of defies logic but, for me, the results are like chalk and cheese.

I'm actually considering to give my Quest 3 another try for its mixed reality. For instrument flight practicing, being able to use MR window to see and operate my hardware controls would be great. The image quality is less important as I'll be in the clouds the "soup" most of the time.

but instruments and charts should still be crisp, even more so in the soup? I think the latest new Pimax (DreamAir) will handle both: see through cameras AND DisplayPort connections, perhaps even WiFi later on. I might keep the Quest 3 solely for its huge range of mixed reality games. The link cable that I have orderd is the INIU 5 meters USB 3 version, not sure if that will make a difference and will handle the image transfer or only charges and uploads games etc.

Good point about chart clarity in Quest 3. Instrument gauges should be fine in Q3 if I remember correctly.

Does Dream Air have color high resolution passthrough as Quest 3? Quest 3 passthrough is amazing considering its price point.

AI Overview

The Pimax Dream Air features

a basic, black-and-white (monochrome) passthrough for simple real-world awareness (like finding your drink or controllers) using its built-in cameras, similar to the Crystal Super's functionality, but lacks built-in color passthrough for full augmented reality, though Pimax has hinted at potential future color AR faceplate add-ons. You can activate passthrough and switch modes with a double-tap on the headset's side

20 years ago, this is what was being said about TrackIR.  At least its cost of entry was only $150, a bargain compared to VR, but obviously not a fair comparison.

BTW, been a VR convert since 2021...no looking back!  Got a Pimax Dream Air SE on preorder.

I orientated my settings to the pimax msfs2024 setup guide from their website ...and it worked well!

Incl. their suggestions on the 20% Nvidia sharpening setting!

Mostly get 45 fps stable at eddf, omdb etc...with in game AI traffic at high and parked aircraft at ultra.....dlss balanced with 5090 rtx and pimax super 50ppd 95% resolution it's razor sharp ...

Got my crystal super 5 days ago.....and came from Varjo aero. Crystal super is much more smooth compared to aero.
