I once found a cat whisker that had fallen off the cat. They are marvelous pieces of engineering. They are much thicker at the base than at the tip. If you hold the whisker at the base, and touch various spots on the whisker, you notice that the touch is amplified considerably, very light at the tip, much heavier near the base. Much more than if the whisker was the same thickness throughout. I was quite impressed. Or maybe I'm just easily amused. 😄 The whiskers will also react to air movement, giving the cat considerable input into not only movement around it, but also its own head movement, useful for the various acrobatics the cat does. I figured out cats were farsighted when Fritz obviously couldn't see the pieces of kibble I held out to him in my hand, but found them anyway, possibly by smell. Cat vision has another anomaly. I once saw a video of a cat with an electrode implanted it its visual cortex. They moved a dark line across a screen in front of the cat. The neuron fired if the movement was side to side, but did not fire on up and down motion. The researchers thought they'd found a specific neuron that measured side to side motion. I believe all cats visual neurons react strongly to sideways motion, not just the one they found. While cats obviously see static objects, they react strongly to movement, especially side to side movement. Maybe they "see" it highlighted in a different color. That running mouse is bright magenta! 🙂 I've developed a specific gesture to call my cats. I hold my hand with the thumb facing up and wiggle two fingers in a "running" motion, side to side. I suppose I could have one in my apartment but I don't think it's fair to cat to keep it cooped up indoors all the time.
