Just a comment on Linux generally -Nothing to do with Sim stuff at all but for years I have battled with printers/scanner issues with Windows and HP Printers. Today wheeled out the old HP printer scan

But an opinion always worth reading!👍

You have to give good old J credit here. After spending several days getting almost everything set up – OpenSUSE, X-Plane and AutoOrtho on my machine – I really can’t tell much difference in performance. In the end, what affects X-Plane the most, as always in my case, is the VRAM and multi-threading.

I’ve got an i7 11700F, a 3060 Ti with 8GB of VRAM and 16GB of RAM. On the downside, I’m missing out on add-ons like TDS’s Garmin, and I’ll probably have to struggle with more than one complex aircraft.

I’m going to stick with OpenSUSE for a while longer because I’m curious to try Steam and other games, but I’m clear that in my particular case, Linux isn’t worth it for gaming – you miss out on too much to gain basically nothing, except spending hours figuring out how to get X-Plane and the rest of the add-ons to run properly (which, deep down, is fun).

I did try hard, and will probably return one day, but I have to be able to run Il2as well as now Aces of Thunder, and I would have problems running both.

DCS can be made to run, with some problems.

DCS se puede hacer para correr, con algunos problemas.

Until they port it to Vulkan, DCS is a joke on Linux, especially if you're using VR.

Not much fun to be found with that hardware in general. Regardless of the OS, 16 GB is too little for XP and always has been, especially when running the SimHeaven stuff.

If a plugin ships a lin.xpl, it runs on Linux. If it refuses to run, a "sudo ldd /path/to/lin.xpl" on the plugin plus a web search will find you the OS package you need to install in order to make it run.

Steam is quite straightforward. Set Proton as a compatibility tool for the game, install, launch and if it does not work, consult ProtonDB for required compatibility flags. If that still does not help, the game usually has an issue thread on Proton's Github where bugs and remedies are discussed.

My add-ons from my FS9/FSX days

My computer is actually more than capable of running X-Plane 12 and DCS smoothly; RAM has never been an issue with Orthos + Simheaven – I’ve never used more than 14 GB. The bottleneck in X-Plane and MFS is still the VRAM.

Ultimately, it’s about knowing how to tweak the games and not going overboard with the settings.

I’ve switched back to Windows again; I’ve really remembered why I stopped using Linux and FreeBSD at home. When you’re young and enthusiastic, it’s great fun, but now, if I’ve got an hour to enjoy a video game, I don’t fancy spending that hour fiddling about with the operating system – that’s where the folks at Apple have a real advantage.

Win 11 biggest joke since win8. Why anyone would use it is beyond me.

The funny thing is that I know plenty of people who complain about Microsoft’s privacy practices and yet use Google’s services every day 😜

I'm not surprise to see users jumping back to windows after testing Linux. Windows is the best platform for gamers seeking compatibility and simplicity. I'm looking forward to the dedicated game mode coming later this year (Windows 11 only). Windows 11 has become my favorite OS since Windows XP. Fast boot times and I've never had a PC crash (been using since day 1 release). Stability beats windows 10 for me.

Microsoft says the mode is designed to minimize distractions and improve performance. Some background processes are reduced when the interface is active, freeing more system resources (including up to 2GB of RAM) for gaming workloads.

My second favorite OS is Linux (Ubuntu). My windows terminal defaults to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Anticipating Ubuntu 26 but Linux cannot meet my needs for a primary OS. One shortcoming of Linux is that games that require kernel level-anti cheat systems are not supported. Try running a game like Destiny 2 on Linux and enjoy having your account banned by the developer. Besides that, I have too many peripherals/hardware with no Linux driver support. It's great for my DEV work though.

Are you trying to say I may receive ads based on places I've visited while using the map service😄 I wonder how they figured out when I arrived at home and at work without any additional data. (oh, tracking my location patterns). And I was worried about my anonymized GPU/CPU model being leaked via telemetry😁.
