Tobii Eye > TrackIR

I saw that Tobii was on sale 15% off so I went for it, looking forward to some non headphone head tracking!

With my desk/monitor setup I also bought a small tripod and the tripod adapter so I’ll need to do some fiddling to get that going but I’m happy to have this heading my way.  I prefer simming without headphones so never bothered using my TrackIR with MSFS very often.

Jumped on it, as well. Will be building a holder of sorts to off set for my wheel setup.

I have been using a Tobii Eye Tracker for about a year now. Before, I used TrackIR 5 for many many years.  I do NOT use the eye tracking, as I find it too jittery for my liking and only use head

Yes. You can disable eye tracking. In fact I never use eye tracking. I had Track IR for about 15 years then I switch to tobii 4 years ago. Tobii is much better!

Update - With the latest Chase Plane update + TOBII (MSFS2024 SU5 Beta) you can now look other your shoulder.

Best regards, Fritz ESSONO

My Tobii arrived yesterday and I spent some time last night getting it setup, figuring out the best desk placement with the tripod etc.

Overall I’m pretty happy with it.  I got it setup in a few driving sims last night, and tackled MSFS24 this morning.  If I’m reading things correctly, it looks like I can’t use the MSFS built in Tobii controls if I have opentrack installed, but I need opentrack for another game I play (Train Sim World) so I’ve gone the opentrack route for MSFS instead.

Did a bunch of tweaking this morning and am generally happy with the results, though I’ll likely keep dialling things I as I fly.

I’d say the head tracking is pretty comparable to Track IR.  Maybe not 100% as precise, but nothing that causes me any concern.  I plan to unplug and pack away my TrackIR receiver today.

I opted for the $20 express shipping.  I ordered it April 3rd, and it arrived yesterday.  Interestingly it shipped from Sweden rather the US even though I bought it from the US store.  I’m in Canada.  Not bad overall given I ordered it at the beginning of Easter weekend, though not the advertised 1-2 business days.

Overall I’m quite happy and it’s nice to have head tracking without wearing anything on my head!

Ordered same time as you and received same day, as well. Did not pay the extra $20.

Do you have yours offset to one side to clear your wheel?

Have mine off to the left and wasn't easy to config the eye tracking, although in sim, I'm 90% using head tracking. Haven't tried it in driving sim yet.

Interesting, I’ll send a note to Tobii to make sure it was indeed shipped with the method I paid for.  Are you in Canada as well?

I have mine straight ahead, but on my desk on the camera tripod adapter.  I use the Tobii Display Setup Tool to configure the location I have it sitting on my desk.  It took a bit of fiddling but it’s working well now.  It’s high enough to clear my hardware for driving and flight simming.

Negative. Home of EAA.

Used the Display setup, as well but I have the eye tracker turned in a bit because of the left offset. Eye tracking not the best but, head tracking working as expected.

I have done a moderately detailed comparison of the Tobii and TrackIR in the following video. Many thanks to @andy1252, who generously donated his Tobii so I could make this!

Nice comparison. Never done TrackIR so, can't be subjective on that. I agree with your analogy on the workings of the EyeTracker and as you said, it just depends on exactly how you are using it along with price. Not really using the eye tracking in msfs 2024 as it just seems to be what works best, for me. Have to see how it does in driving sims. All in all, it brought me the imersiveness I was looking for, in 2024.

A few days in now and I’m quite enjoying the head tracking.  I did try the eye tracking in some driving sims but I don’t think it’s for me.  With my large display I like to be able to look around it without my eyes moving things.

With head tracking only, I’m not noticing any meaningful difference from Track IR, I’m quite happy with my purchase.

Excellent video Mark. I changed from TrackIR4 to Tobii 5 last year.

Its interesting to see in you video extended options, or certainly easier to understand for modifying open tracker through the game hub. For awhile I was on SU5 Beta and when an update completely broke Tobii I tried out Open Tracker. I wasn't 100% happy with it but after Asobo fixed the sim and added extra configurable options i stopped using Open Tracker. I have however since gone back to SU4 so back to having less control over thr Tobii natively.

After seeing your video I tried OT again and all seemed better until I tried a proper flight in the Fenix. Anytime I look at the efb or on my 2nd monitor to the right of my main screen Tobii ends up quickly put of sync with my head. Every 2 mins I am having to recenter. Even when I reset all axis to default. Think I might have to return to SU5 beta and ditch OT when I finish my current flight. Any suggestions?

I wonder if you have the 'head auto center' option turned on? That would make it appear to drift if you were looking at your EFB for more than a few seconds. Otherwise, I haven't experienced this but I also haven't flown a whole lot with the Tobii beyond testing it out. Maybe I will experiment and report back.

I also received my Tobii last week. Somehow, my old TrackIR was giving me bad 'spikes' of wrong direction even without sunlight. I didn't even know that the Tobii was a  Windows Hello device, nice!

I noticed that with Tobii Experience running, my PC would not go in sleep. I solved it now as I use it with opentrack and disabled the Tobii Service. That was the Tobii experience is not running, and my PC goes to sleep.

I couldn't find discussion about this issue anywhere. As anybody had this problem?

In Tobii Experience, go to Productivity, turn off Stay Awake.

I had thought it was off since always off natively in the sim but since posting my previous comment I had noticed it enabled in game hub. I hadn't noticed any self centering as it was pretty instant...look left or right to an extreme then straight ahead and thr view was incorrect. Disabling that option has helped a little. Su5 beta introduces smoothing which helps a little with jitter. Im not a fan of enabling any sort of dead zone with head tracking

Actually, I still have the problem, I turned it off and the monitor never goes blank/lock/sleep
