Tobii Eye > TrackIR

Featured Replies

A bit off topic for this forum, but is anyone using Tobii here for driving sims, both racing and non (is Truck and Bus sims)?  Curious how those compare to using Track IR.  It sounds like I’m getting closer to making a move.  I read about Tobii not being as “precise” with head movements…anything to that?

I have been using a Tobii Eye Tracker for about a year now. Before, I used TrackIR 5 for many many years.  I do NOT use the eye tracking, as I find it too jittery for my liking and only use head

Yes. You can disable eye tracking. In fact I never use eye tracking. I had Track IR for about 15 years then I switch to tobii 4 years ago. Tobii is much better!

Got my Tobii Eye 5 yesterday and got it set up. I have had several TrackIRs over the years, but Tobii Eye is better in a few key areas. First, you don’t need to wear anything. I was a bit skeptical about how well this really worked, but the second thing I really like about Tobii is it is even smoother than the latest TrackIR. Super smooth in fact. Third, the freedom of movement is much better. I constantly found myself reaching the limit.

Very good.

Try looking over your shoulder - Tobii doesn't work in that scenario because if you move your head left, the view moves right and vice versa.  Maybe less of a problem in an airliner, but for GA flying that is a no go.  for example, if you want to look over your left shoulder to check for your base leg turn.  When you look over your left shoulder and move to the right to get closer to the side window, your view moves left!

TrackIR still moves in the correct direction when looking over the shoulder.  I wear a headset so the track clip just goes on the headset.

Tobii moves in the wrong direction when looking over your shoulder.  Move you head left and the view moves right!  TrackIR doesn't suffer with this flaw.  For me, Tobii is no good for any sim because of that.

If you only ever look forward, then I guess its fine!

This is the purpose of the 'True View' flag in the TrackIR software. If you have True View turned on, the translation frame of reference is clamped to the rotation frame. If you don't have True View set, the two reference frames remain independent. It sounds like the Tobii software doesn't have an equivalent to this setting (or maybe you don't have it turned on!)

For Tobii, enable the 'Relative translation' option in Opentrack. Hopefully the sim will include this option in the future.

I have no idea what he is talking about either. I look over my shoulder and never have the view swap to the other side. Must be something on his end, but i will retest this!

I disagree, I move my head left & right all the time and the eye tracker follows, maybe I've got a more flexible neck.

Never experienced it, just so much smoother working than Trackir. I will never go back.

After a lot of hesitation, I bought a Tobii last weekend at FSWeekend and I’m very satisfied. I had previously tried some open-source solutions and even Eyebeam demos with an iPhone, but this is on a completely different level, especially in terms of ease of setup.

I’ll also say that, even though I initially thought I wouldn’t use eye tracking much, I actually find it excellent. Even in a limited way, I really enjoy just being able to look at things during procedures.

The only downside is that I find it a bit inconvenient when using the MCDU and managing the upper overhead panel, so during those phases I tend to disable it.

One major issue, though: the mounting system included in the box only worked for a few hours and then became unusable. I just can’t get it to stay attached, even after buying new double-sided tape. It’s as if the weight of the Tobii makes it come off. I’m trying some alternative (i.e. fixing only tobii under the monitor with the tape)  but I haven’t found a definitive solution yet.

Not sure ive experienced this either with Tobii. I do know in SU4 thr tobii options were limited and if you looked left then tried to move towards the left side window the view moved forwards towards the front unlike an option you can enable in TrackIR. SU5 Beta fixes this so I can easily look out the left or right windows and lean towards the left or right window by leaning towards it as you would IRL

I had that option enabled when using Opentrack when SU5 beta didnt support Tobii. However I stopped using Open Track and set up Tobii in the sim and the relative translation effect seems to still work. Not even opened or running Open Track so wondering if all the new Tobii options natively make this work

I bought ChasePlane over the weekend and one of the nicest features is that when you select a pre-defined view, e.g., the overhead panel or EICAS, Tobii is temporarily disabled until you return to the pilot view.

I queried the manufacturers of the Tobii who acknowledge the issue.

The manufacturer acknowledged the issue when I asked them.  I went back to TrackIR immediately.
