What's With Frame Gen?

Featured Replies

As someone who has been an active simmer and member of Avsim for the best part of 18 years, I nevertheless have to admit at not being that familiar with the inner workings or ideal settings of frame generation. As such, I'm wondering if my recent 'fails' are due to finger trouble or perhaps more well known shortcomings of the software. I recently purchased a 4090, which I am 'over the moon' with and thought it a good time to experiment with the latest driver and FG. After doing a clean install of the latest driver and updating the NVidia app, I followed the instructions on several videos on how to implement the relevent settings in the app. All seemed well, except on three or four occasions I have had scenarios that I find troubling. The first problem is the sim has frozen, not crashed back to desktop, but the sim itself has become completely frozen. The other experiences I have had are that FPS and smoothness has dropped enormously from about 40+fps to a stuttery 24fps, in a stationary scenario in the PMDG 738 at a gate in KDCA. The only thing I can think of, that may have been attributed to these issues is that, because I had just installed FG, I was in fact switching between FG being on and then off several times during the time I was testing. I was also switching between Vsync and DLAA on or off. Could this be a well documented reason and has anyone else experienced similar issues. Thanks.

IMHO, with a 4090, you don't really need extra 3rd party FrameGen mods, I'd just use the SIM's built-in 2x FrameGen with the latest DLSS 4.5, that should give you plenty fps. without all this hassle.

AMD 7800X3D, Windows 11, Gigabyte X670 AORUS Elite AX Motherboard, 64GB DDR5 G.SKILL Trident Z5 NEO RGB (AMD Expo), RTX 4090,  Samsung 980 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD 2 TB PCIe 4.0, Samsung 980 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD 1 TB PCIe 4.0, 4K resolution 50" TV @60Hz, VR: Pimax Crystal Light + HP Reverb G2 @ 90 Hz, Honeycomb Bravo Throttle Quadrant, be quiet 1000W PSU, Noctua NH-U12S chromax.black air cooler.

60-130 fps. no CPU overclocking.

very nice.

Ah, as I mentioned, I am using the Nvidia app to install the latest 4.5 FG. What are you suggesting I do differently? I'm assuming you mean choose: 'use 3D app settings' in the Nvidia app?

Yikes! Dunno what's happening. Literally just started the same flight as yesterday, this time without switching through any of the settings, go straight to an exterior view and the whole sim has frozen. I've just restarted the same flight, this time I have chosen the 'use 3D app settings' in the Nvidia app. Let's see what happens.  EDIT: Just tried it again and got the same issue... whole sim froze.

Hi there, it’s an issue that has been playing The sim SU3 beta it was fixed temporarily, and then came back again and SU4 and what you’re describing is exactly this issue

you can try them out yourself and see the results obviously there’s no harm in using it..

there’s a lot of posts on it in the MSFS official forums I have a post about it here you can check all the links relating to this issue

Why are you insisting in every post not to let people use the mod? Why are you spreading false information? This is literally the only fix for this issue

Yet you’re here playing on 1080 P and saying you’re gonna have plenty of FPS of of course with the resolution from 2010 you’re gonna have a ton of FPS but when it’s coming to 1440P or 4K the equation changes a lot

The only hassle with installing the mod is getting over your false comments

Ah OK, however, I missed in saying I use 2020. But it's comforting, in some strange way, to know I am not alone! I'm just going to try it with the lossless scaling app, which of course is a third party app via Steam.

No, there's no need to use the Nvidia App for frame generation.

Turbomax is correct. You can select the FG option from within the sim settings.

Try this first before attempting any other external apps or downloads.

Interesting. The issue remained, while turning off FG in the NV app and turning it on in the MS settings. However, I am now using the third party lossless scaling app, have it set on x2 for FGH and so far all seems well!  EDIT: actually, I've just done a reboot, and disregard my last statement, at least up to now, yes, it does run OK with the MS FG on in game. I hope it continues, thanks.

What kind of framerates does an RTX 4090 deliver in super dense scenery areas at 4K resolution without FG? I assume that PG on, full AI traffic and complex weather can bring even a card with this much power to its knees?

Hi Christopher, I'm at Drzewiecki Design KDCA at Jetway 10 in the PMDG738, moderate setting with a few on ultra, with real weather, PG off, BATC using FSLTL, 180 LOD and frames are 35 before FG. Oh, and using super resolution with DLAA. With GSX on, frames dip to about 33.

72 in almost all scenarios running BATC in zero visibility weather. No stutters. Butter smooth. No extra FG mods.

So you do not actually need to use FrameGen at all on your PC, Rob?

Sorry, running FG just not the extra version.dll mod.
