May 17May 17 I made two of my best unorthodox approach and landings this afternoon. The first one was the RNP03 approach at LECO A Coruna in the 737-800 BDSF. A relatively gentle turn through around 80 degrees, and a smooth centreline touchdown right on the markers. The other one was the Circle to Land approach to runway 14 at LYTV Tivat in the 737-800 SSW. I think that I was a bit wide for the 180 degree turn over the bay, but once again I lined it up perfectly with the runway after passing over the marina, and another centreline touchdown close to the markers. Having said that, I should probably also mention the visual approach to runway 09 at LXGB Gibraltar in the 737-800 SSW. This was a significant overshoot of the centreline after turning onto final approach, so a bit of quick corrective action was required to line it up. Nevertheless, even that one was a pretty decent touchdown close to the markers.Now that I have the boasting out of the way 🙃, the main reason for this post is to ask why there does not seem to be any information regarding the Circle to Land approach to runway 14 at LYTV Tivat in Navigraph Charts? Is this kind of approach not normally documented in Navigraph Charts, or has it been removed for some reason? I had to create a suitable approach path for this after the deviation at TAZ when coming in from the 32 side of the airport.I quite often make a bit of a pig's ear of these kind of approaches (particularly those 09 and 27 approaches at LGSM Samos), but it is extremely satisfying when I get it right! I find older (ca 2008) Jepp charts for it, but nothing current anywhere including Navigraph - all of which would lead me to believe the reason it's not in Navigraph Charts is because it's no longer a current/valid approach procedure.Scott

May 17May 17 The approaches to runway 32 have circle-to-land minima (the NDB A obviously does too), so circling is definitely an option. There just isn't a prescribed flight track for the circling, so you'll have to work out for yourself how you want to perform the circling to remain within the protected circling airspace (and bearing in mind that circling is prohibited northeast of the airport).

What do they do when there is a strong wind from the east/south east?No idea about the why, but the NDB A is available for either runway, and as others note, you can circle to land from the localizer 32 or RNP 32 approaches. Note circling minimums and limitations as published on each plate.Scott

May 17May 17 Ah, so information regarding circling approaches is generally provided on approach charts for the opposite end of the runway?Yup. (Well, it's really just the circling minima.)It's the rule, rather than the exception, for an approach to have circling minima. Pull up a random approach at a random airport, and the chances are it will have circling minima.Also, you don't necessarily need to circle to the opposite runway end. At Teterboro KTEB (to take just one example), it's pretty common to fly the ILS approach to runway 6, then circle to runway 1. (Runway 1 doesn't have an ILS because it would conflict with Newark's airspace.)

I'm not familiar with the airport being discussed, but if it gets regular airline service, decent chance at least some of those operators have their own approaches. Andrew Crowley

I just completed a flight from MMUN to KSEA in the 737-800. It wasn't a difficult approach to ILS 16R, but it flew the approach circuit perfectly. The VNAV descent hit every ALT perfectly. I followed the glideslope all the way down to the rwy center line. Another perfect flight. May 18May 18 LFKC - Calvi St Catherine - on Corsica, was always a favourite for Circle to Land in an airliner...In this video I think the Copilot was so relieved they made it.... watch his subtle giveaways all the way to the gate.... lol . Looks like they edited out part of the turn overshoot to finals...I have seen a few planes do missed approaches on Flightradar24 and divert to LIEO - Olbia Costa Smeralda - further along the coast (bad weather, wind I guess)This is a cracker.... May 18May 18 Author The approach that I find the most difficult of the ones that I have tried is the runway 28 approach at TNCM St Maarten. That is such a tight turn really close to the runway that I have only ever made one acceptable landing there in the PMDG 737, and even that was far from perfect.I need to practice this one more frequently......
