What is happening with msfs2024, (help needed)

Featured Replies

Hello All.

Just lately I have not been able to do a single flight in fs2024. I get as far as choosing an arrival airport/runway in free flight and not only does the sim completely freeze, but my entire pc! Nothing works! the mouse pointer won't move, ctrl alt delete doesn't work to get to task manager, the only thing I can do is press and hold the pc start button to close down entirely. This happens every time without exception. I have been online for help and discovered I am certainly not alone with this problem, however, having tried all the possible fixes suggested inluding msfs2024 repair and windows repair, clearing cache's, nothing has worked. I have all the latest updates available, Nvidia drivers, dlls etc. The only addons I've installed have been fs2024 native. My pc spec's I've listed below.

PLEEEEEEASE can someone help me, if you have any experience of this problem and have a cure. I haven't flown at all in days and I'm getting withdrawal symptons ☹️🤪🤣!

Thank you in advance and best regards.

Well, I just asked my Copilot 😁 and his answer was:

The entire PC freezes, not just the sim. No mouse, no Ctrl+Alt+Del → this is a kernel‑level hang, not an MSFS crash.

When MSFS locks the whole machine, it’s almost always one of these:

1. Dual‑GPU conflict (NVIDIA + Intel UHD 770)

Your system has both:

  • RTX 5080

  • Intel UHD 770 (iGPU)

MSFS 2024 is known to hard‑freeze Windows on some systems when the Intel GPU is still enabled, even if the monitor is connected to the NVIDIA card.

Fix

Disable the Intel GPU completely:

BIOS → Advanced → System Agent → Graphics Configuration → iGPU = Disabled

If BIOS doesn’t allow it:

  1. Open Device Manager

  2. Expand Display Adapters

  3. Right‑click Intel UHD 770Disable device

This alone has solved the full‑system freeze for many users.

2. NVidia driver + MSFS 2024 conflict (common with 50‑series cards)

The newest drivers sometimes cause:

  • Hard freezes when loading airports

  • Black screens

  • GPU timeout → system hang

Fix

Roll back to a stable driver:

  • 552.44 or 552.22 (both confirmed stable for MSFS 2024)

Use DDU (safe mode) before reinstalling.

3. Airport selection freeze = corrupted world map cache

MSFS 2024 stores map tiles and airport metadata in a cache that can corrupt and freeze the sim when selecting arrival airports.

Fix

Delete these folders:

Código

%AppData%\Microsoft Flight Simulator\SceneryIndexes
%LocalAppData%\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\MapData
%LocalAppData%\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\SceneryCache

MSFS will rebuild them automatically.

4. XMP / RAM instability (very common with 64 GB)

Even if RAM passes MemTest, MSFS is extremely sensitive to marginal XMP profiles.

Fix

Enter BIOS → set:

  • XMP = OFF

  • Or reduce memory speed by one step (e.g., 6000 → 5600)

If the freezes disappear, you’ve found the culprit.

5. PSU transient spikes (12900KS + RTX 5080)

Your CPU + GPU combo can pull very high transient loads. If the PSU is borderline or older, MSFS can trigger a full system lock.

Fix

If your PSU is < 1000W or older than 3 years, this is a real possibility.

Most likely fix for your case

Given your symptoms and hardware:

➡️ Disable the Intel UHD 770 iGPU

This is the #1 cause of full‑system freezes when selecting airports in MSFS 2024.

Since the last SU, I've had several crashes with MFS, so there might be an issue. I've had 7- and 8-hour sessions with XP12, which is more demanding on my hardware, without any problems, so I'm ruling out issues with my computer.

Before posting the results of my query to MS Copilot I considered the possibility of high core / gpu temps, and that is surely not to discard given the situation in the UK and Central Europe, but I assume the user is aware of the consequences of running desktop under high T...

I have never experienced such a behaviour in MSFS, or X-Plane, though, even under limit situations...

Gentlemen, thank you for your replies so far. Those who have made reference to the temperature, yes it's a bit warm today at 34 C. I do have two house fans pointing directly at my pc tower but I must admit it could be a factor, I just don't know. I am currently going through the items suggested by jcomm which is why I've been a little quiet just now. I shall report back when I've completed the list but I'm afraid no joy so far.

Thank you all again and please keep any further thoughts coming.

Malcolm,

You said this started recently essentially which I assume implies it was running okay prior to lately. The giant elephant in the PC is that it freezes outright, not just MSFS failing or locking up. At this point my bet is it is absolutely hardware related--possibly temperature related. Are you monitoring CPU temp? If not, that would be my next move. As a short-term test, if you haven't already, blow out your PC case completely, then leave the side cover off and aim a fan on lower speed direct into it. If that doesn't improve things do a memory test next. Your issue is not MSFS per se, though it is causing the issue to manifest. If you discover memory test and CPU/GPU temps are fine the next step would be a complete reinstall of Win 11 and MSFS.

Are you over clocking your cpu or memory? Does the system freeze if you don't enter a terminal procedure? If you just jump in a plane and fly it does the system freeze? Load a default plane and fly and see if you can fly for at least an hour without freezing. Also, rename your community folder and let 2024 rebuild a new one, you can also make a copy of your user.cfg and delete the one being used. you never mentioned what plane your using when you have system freezing.

I live in Alicante, Spain, so I know a thing or two about the heat, and I can tell you that normally, a well built computer isn't going to suffer any more just because it's 34 degrees that's a typical summer day here. During heat waves, the temperature goes up much higher, but I've never had to stop gaming or working on a computer in the 40 or so years I've been gaming on a PC.

Not sure how old the OP's computer is but one thing I'd check is the filters. Excessive heat plus dust clogged filters could be enough to push a PC past stable condition. Check any filters in front of your case fans if present and don't forget also that many power supply units also sit above another filter often installed to the base of a PC that can usually be easily slid out for cleaning. If not the solution, regularly cleaning filters is a good habit to get into anyhow.

Gentlemen, I do thank you all again for your kind support with my problem. Ok so my GPU is currently running at 40 c. jcomm I have turned off XMP as you suggested and I've just completed a short VFR flight without issue. Prior to this and after closing XMP I set up a ifr flight from KATL to EHAM in a Delta Inibuilds A350 and all went well right up to the part where I had completed the set up and then went to fire up AIG Traffic contoller and at that point I got the total freeze, but I have to say jcomm I think msfs2024 may be cured,(fingers crossed), but more testing to do I think. Does anyone have any thoughts on the AIG thing please. Checking filters in progress right now.

Thanks again.

I have no problem with AIG, sounds like your system can't handle a load for some reason. I you tried uninstalling video drivers reboot, re install video drivers, selecting a clean install. Why are you trying to troubleshoot loading the A350? Why don't you start with a Asobo default plane and see how far you can get with that with empty community folder. Also look at your event viewer log and see what's running when system freezes.

Actually Bigmack as I mentioned earlier I did successfully do a simple vfr flight in a basic aircraft. The reason I did a setup with the A350 was to push that setup further to see how it stood up, and it was ok. It was AIG Traffic Controller that actually finally made the whole pc freeze when I tried to fire it up. This is the element I hope to resolve with the help of the good folk on this forum.
