I've been using Carbonite for nearly 2 years and have found only the mirror image backup portion to be of any use. User files backup I find better with google and Microsoft Onedrive. Mirror image backup I think is essential for flight simmers. I don't plan to continue using Carbonite and will try other dedicated programs like Acronis for mirror image backup. Cheers

Threw the years I've used just about every conceivable monitor size and configuration. Finally had to stop simming at a desk. Some setups were quite immersive but terribly uncomfortable. Nothing beats a 50" or larger 4K TV/Monitor using these new 900 series GPU's . My 55" was so good I decided to go 78". It's amazing. 2 GTX 970's in SLI does very nicely at a reasonable price. Providing 3840 x 2160 @ 60hz I prefer TrackIR with 1 large screen rather than multi monitors. My personal experience of coarse. Steve

I guess I'm one of the fooled into thinking the P3D version of the ngx was going to be released with weather radar and other enhancements. I'm sure I saw a screenshot here in the pmdg forum. I guess one has to always read the fine print, and continue to follow these post before purchasing. Why do developers feel the need to tell us what is coming, before they know when it's coming. Stick to developing and release it when it's ready. Steven Cannell

I had to return to 8.1 as 10 was a little to buggy. Looks like it will be a big improvement once finished. Just to many FSX-SE and P3D v2 addons to expect that everything would install and work without issues. Cheers Steve

I continue to be amazed with the performance I'm getting with my very affordable 2 EVGA GTX 970's in SLI. I gathered from the forums that SLI wasn't yet being utilized. However my results, to me anyways, seem to suggest there might be some benefit ??? Maybe it's simply the 4K resolutions (3840 x 2160 @60hz) allowing me to play at very little AA settings that's making the difference ?? Both FSX-SE and P3D 2.5 running at 40 -60 fps and smooth as I have every seen. No heavy airliners yet but the Milviz b407 over Vancouver city, PNW, weather and clouds. Anyone else running 900 series cards in SLI ? Cheers Steve

After trying everything imaginable several times, I decided to revert back to Windows 8.1 OpusFSI activation worked as it should !! :-) No way of knowing for sure, of coarse, did Windows 10 become a barrier ? To bad, as 10 was very good despite being a build that is still a moving target. OpusFSI was the first program I found related to flightsimming to possibly be affected. Two other insignificant non related programs as well. Cheers Steve

Have you downloaded the correct wrapper file? Yes, OpusFSX_Flight1_Purchase.exe and OpusFSI_Upgrade_Purchase.exe . OpusFSX works fine, it's the upgrade I can't get to activate. The upgrade purchase wrapper validates the key and places the OpusFSI.msi and the OpusFSIUpgrade.lic files in the C:\Opus Software folder. I then install to default location. I'm really baffled as OpusFSI was all working before my fresh clean OS install. All other programs and Flight sims work fine. Open to your suggestions. Steve

Hi Stephen Yes, I purchased the upgrade Sept 2014. Yes, I did try key reactivation. F1 sent me a link via email. However I am assuming this just reactivates my key as nothing downloaded. I also re-downloaded another key file which didn't work. Both the OpusFSX and the OpusFSI upgrade licence files are in the Opus software folder. I have tried many re installs, uninstalling from the control panel each time as well as removing the OpusFSI folder and it's remaining files. Nothing seems to work. The log file continues to say invalid licence. :-( Cheers Steve

I am starting from a new system install. Downloaded F1 purchase wrappers opusfsx and opusfsi upgrade. Opusfsx installs and validates perfectly, however opusfsi does not. From the wrapper I select re-install as usual, browse for key, KEY ACCEPTED. Then I run the opisFSI.msi to install to default location. When I open the installed upgrade and FSISERVER it never validates licence. The fsiserver log file: OpusFSI Flight Simulator Interface Log Generated Wednesday, February 18, 2015, 5:21 PM Hrs Installed Folder: C:\OPUSFSI 2 Errors Detected. Invalid Licence. Invalid Licence. Installed Files: OPUSFSI.DLL Version: 4.4.7.3 , Wednesday, February 18, 2015, 5:21 PM Hrs FSISYSTEM.DLL Version: 4.4.7.3 , Friday, February 13, 2015, 6:52 PM Hrs FSISERVER.EXE Version: 4.4.7.3 , Friday, February 13, 2015, 6:52 PM Hrs FSDECODER.EXE Version: 4.4.7.3 , Friday, February 13, 2015, 6:52 PM Hrs Messed around several hours trying to get this working Hope you can help. Very frustrated. Steve

I'm very happy and impressed with the smoothness and stunning visual quality I'm getting using 2 GTX 970's in SLI. Running at 3840 x 2160 at 60Hz refresh rate In Windows 10 and both FSX-SE and P3D v2.5 The monitor is a Samsung UHD 78" Curved Screen.(UH9000) Using a Monster HDMI 2.0, thick cable plugged into port 2 (hdmi/dvi) Latest samsung update and settings to HDMI UHD Color (4.4.4) I think a recent samsung update might have something to do with my recent sucess with 60hz. For weeks my attempts would result in black screens or device not found. Couldn't be happier now though. Cheers Steve

Hi Steve I don't have an answer for you, but I too just purchased a Samsung UHD curved 78" but haven't had a chance yet to try my flightsims with it. I did try my PC Call of duty Ghosts and it worked great at 1080p and 4k resolutions. I hope to give fsx and p3d it a try shortly using my current GTX 670 but also thinking of upgrading to a new card. Maybe a 780ti or 980. Will let you know how it goes. Cheers Steve

SSD or HDD?
Steve Cannell replied to Gizmo05's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etc
SSD and the bigger the better. Cheers -
Purchased both. However moved back to opus camera just recently due to issues with ezca in P3D. Glad I did !! Works very well and I'm finding it to be easier now to create camera sets and save them. Opus has made an amazing piece of software .They continue to support and update their product with added functionality not bug fixes like others do. Works great with both FSX and P3D. All this and no additional cost. They seem to have passion for what they're doing and have proven for me, to be the best weather and camera app going forward. Simply makes sense to support OPUS. Cheers Steve

Prepar3D v2.2 I give up. Refund requested.
Steve Cannell replied to TrafficPilot's topic in The Prepar3d Forum
I've had more troubles like this with FSX than I'd care to remember. Haven't had P3D long enough to have it all go wrong, although it probably will at some point. . Took me a while to learn this. There's really only one single solution to these kinds of problems. Mirror image backup !!! It takes an image every day. Stores it to an external HD. I have images now of 455 days. All the way back to a fresh install of Windows 8 or maybe the day I successfully installed and tested FSX. Any day I'd like. What could be better ? Seriously anyone not doing this, well you know. :-) Sorry for repeating myself but this I feel should be #1 for everyone. Cheers Steve -
MilViz Bell 407 now for P3D v2.2 available
Steve Cannell replied to spirit_66's topic in The Prepar3d Forum
I just purchased the B407 for P3D 2.2 a few days ago and it is really nice. I had it working great for a few flights, however now starting this helo is more miss than hit. I can't get it started and despite sending a couple requests for a support forum login I haven't heard from them. Glad I found this post. At least I know I am not alone with this particular issue. I'll will try a few of the ideas posted here. Thanks Steve -
Wondering about TrackIR 5......
Steve Cannell replied to michael9594's topic in MS FSX | FSX-SE Forum
I prefer the standard clip as well and wear it on a baseball cap. However I think I'll try that idea of fixing it directly to my headphones. :-) Cheers Steve -
Thanks for the club info. This is really good news ! I would never have known otherwise. Cheers Steve

Virus Warning, need some recommendations
Steve Cannell replied to KingGhidorah's topic in Hangar Chat
I use Carbonite. I like it because it's automatic, continues online backup of all my important files. It daily or apon request takes mirror image snapshots of my C/ drive which contains Windows 8.1 and FSX to an external USB drive. This all takes place quietly in the background while I use the computer. Daily snapshots is the key. Weekly isn't frequent enough, When things go wrong it's usually not expected. Restoring an image works great but if several days has past it's hard to remember what changes, settings, installs, have been made. When snapshots are taken daily, restores are almost seamless. I had nearly given up MSFS several times because of unresolvable issues that required a do over. No fun at all ! This is no longer a worry. It's twice saved me this horrible experience of starting over and re-installing everything again. Free trial is available. Cheers Steve -
Virus Warning, need some recommendations
Steve Cannell replied to KingGhidorah's topic in Hangar Chat
When I came apon this post, I couldn't resist offering a bit of advice that I know could help anyone using a Windows OS and especially Flight simmers. I don't use Anti virus, Malware or any other security software. Not needed. Daily Continues Mirror Image Backup !! This has proven to be the only way to ensure my flight simming experience continues without frequent disasters. It's no fun starting over. My snapshot history goes back 380 days. Best of all, I can go back to yesterday when FSX or P3D worked perfectly. :-) Cheers Steve -
I have to disagree and not recommend these sceneries by simaddons for FSX unless your into outdated scenery designed for FS 2004. Terrible support. Bought these years ago and cannot get any support at all. Maybe I need to know this dev personally or at least well enough to call him by his first name. Same forum members recommend this stuff on every post like this. Terrible purchasing scheme, worst in the hobby. Way over priced in my opinion. If you live in Canada like myself there isn't much to choose from, still cannot recommend. Cheers Steve

How Long Have You Been Using MSFS?
Steve Cannell replied to astroavion's topic in The FS2004 (FS9) Forum
Wow, a long time. Think it was some time around 1984 on a Commodore 64. Still luv it after all these years ! I see I beat a few here by a day or 2 in joining # of days ago. :-) As I recall all members back then had to re-create our memberships. Can't remember why or how long before this I actually first became an AVSIM member ? -
I couldn't disagree more with the simaddons comment. It's FS9 quality and you'll need to spend plenty of $$ based on his purchasing model before you'll figure it out.

KVNY and CYYZ would be at the top of my list. Hope these two are in the works by some of the great scenery developers out there. :-) Steve

More realistic ATC rather than the standard.
Steve Cannell replied to Rayan giggs's topic in MS FSX | FSX-SE Forum
I've used them all. They all have their pros and cons. However for my tastes I prefer ProATC X with atc chatter. Cheers
