Direct-X 10 Delayed....
On discussing a forthcoming performance patch, on November 30th, Phil Taylor said:"One additional comment, this is not the DX10 update, that is later next year as a separate release."To read the sentence in context, goto:http://blogs.msdn.com/ptaylor/default.aspxFrom the tone of the blog I doubt he meant early or 1Q 2007.

Vista 32-bit or Vista 64-bit for FSX
NeilI would be cautious using a win-xp driver in vista-32bit anyway.

What it was to be Ernest Gann
I just ordered "Fate is the Hunter" from Amazon. They have stock of both hardcover and softcover editions. The softcover edition is currently on special at $9,90 if I remember correctly. They also have second-hand editions for less than $5here's the link:http://amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_/102-3709717...=0&Go.y=0&Go=Go

Hmmm, pity...You really had me going there for a while :( But I suspected that that was just too good to be true.

FSX AI Aircraft vs FS9 AI Aircraft
Ozzie,You said: " It seems a little odd to me that you should 1st ask a question and THEN challenge the answer that you are given "If you look at the original question, you will see that it wasn't actually answered :- instead the thread digressed elsewhere :-)

Vista 32-bit or Vista 64-bit for FSX
Thank you, Mike, for your well thought-out reply. So is my understanding correct that from a flight-simmer's point of view Vista-64 will suffer the same fate as XP-64 and won't be supported with proper drivers by add-on software developers?I agree that the situation with drivers could become an unacceptable problem if the state of affairs remains similar to what happened with XP-64.However, there was a noticeable IMPROVEMENT in FS-9 smoothness on my system when I upgraded from XP-32 to XP-64 a while ago. And this, despite WOW.Anyone else care to comment?

Vista 32-bit or Vista 64-bit for FSX
Has anyone found an official recommendation from MS as to whether Vista 64-bit would run FSX better than Vista 32-bit.Assuming that one has sufficient hardware, now that Vista is about to be released to the public next month, which Vista should one buy?The simplistic knee-jerk answer is that if you have a 64-bit CPU and enough RAM, the 64-bit Vista is the way to go. But is this in fact so? and will FSX in fact benefit at all from a 64-bit OS?For the purposes of this question, let us assume that we are talking about a dedicated FSX machine running nothing else.Perhaps Bill Leaming or another developer boffin might care to comment, or perhaps even ACES' Phil Taylor might whisper a word in our ears.Since this is not a Hardware question, but a software one, I presume this is the correct forum, Mr Moderator ? ...

Two Product Keys?
Mine was shrinkwrapped so securely that it took quite an effort to get it open. Then there was a seal with a barcode on the side which prevents you accessing the DVDs without breaking it. Inside a single orange product key was securely stuck on the plastic "Jewel-Case". No Certificate of authenticity.I would strongly suspect that your package had either previously been sold and then returned, or the shop staff used it as a demo. It has probably been activated at least once before you got it.

FSX AI Aircraft vs FS9 AI Aircraft
Hello fb,I am very familiar with AI Aircraft from AIA, EvolveAI etc. I have also studied quite a number of the MyTraffic-X models because I enjoy repainting AI models. I can assure you that they are definitely not even vaguely similar to those "mainstream" downloadable FS9 AI aircraft on AVSIM that I have come across. Please, can you do me a favour and post some AVSIM filenames here of those AI Models that are the same as the MyTraffic-X models that you mention which are freely available for download. I sure haven't come across any - but then I suppose I'm just getting old :-) Maybe there are some paintkits available for those models that can save repainters of MyTraffic models a boatload of time.

FSX AI Aircraft vs FS9 AI Aircraft
Thank you fb, but you don't quite understand my question. If I may quote from the MyTraffic X advertising:... " 154+ Aircraft Models - From Boeing to Yakolevs and Cessnas to Embraers, MyTraffic includes them all. All models are created with GMAX optimized for high frame rates even at very busy airports. Most of these aircrafts have been overworked in GMAX specially for FSX, to remove display errors as well as to increase performance beyond the one offered by Microsoft stock planes. Bringing realistic AI traffic to all parts of the world, MyTraffic can be oftenly observed to provide better performance even with more aircrafts around you than FSX stock AI traffic. " ...There is obviously something different if models which were FS9 compliant had to be "overworked especially for FSX".My question is not about the MyTraffic aircraft per se, but rather a more general question as to what makes an FSX-compliant AI aircraft different from an FS9-compliant AI Aircraft? As a side comment about MyTraffic-X, while the actual aircraft are not as beautiful as some of the later FSP or Aardvark FS9 models, the MyTraffic aircraft have been so well optimized for minimal system resource usage that one can have a VERY busy airport in FSX with very little impact on frame rates. Burkhard Renk has done a superb job balancing optical quality with performance. And please, I don't have any connections with the MyTraffic people and I don't have shares in their business ;-)

FSX AI Aircraft vs FS9 AI Aircraft
Could some knowledgeable person please explain the difference between an AI aircraft which is FSX compliant and an FS9 Aircraft which is FSX compatible i.e., one which seems to run fine in FSX but was built for FS9. For example, WOAI aircraft are mainly FSX Compatible (please correct me if I'm wrong) but which are supplied with an FSX compliant installer. Then one periodically comes across the claim that an AI aircraft has been updated for FSX i.e., it appears to have something different about it which qualifies it to be FSX compliant. Can anyone shed any light here ? Has anyone ever come across an AI Aircraft with textures in dds format? (apart from those used by MS in the base FSX package)

Viewing FSX planes for repaint?
Hello JimI had the same idea, but no such luck. FS-Repaint in its present version refuses to load the default FSX aircraft (installed or not).BTW, FS-Repaint will, however, read in the aircraft supplied in the MyTraffic X package which have all been modified to make them fully FSX compatible. GreetingsDave BritziusCape Town

What turbo prop...
Call me old and nostalgic, but I would give my back teeth for a Vickers Viscount. If Paul Golding's team at Dreamfleet built it, that would be first prize.Don't all you oldies remember the Rolls Royce Dart engines spooling up while gazing through nothing more than a chicken wire fence? :-)Those were the days before people started playing terrorists with Aircraft!

Making aircraft invisible in aircraft menu?
Johan,Download a file from the Avsim library called: bbqhideai1006.zipWritten by a bloke by the name of Alan Chanhttp://library.avsim.net/download.php?DLID=64944It's a small download 300kb and works very well indeed. It is intuitive and therefore has no learning curve at all.BTW, We all know that is is only good manners to drop the author an e-mail with a word of thanks if you find a utility useful. However, sometimes the author does not acknowledge receipt of such an e-mail so you sometimes never really know whether the author actually received your thankyou note. A case in point is Alan Chan. I sent him an email expressing my thanks, but I don't know if he got it. If he didn't get my note, and by chance is actually reading this post, THANK YOU, ALAN, VERY MUCH INDEED. IT'S A SUPER LITTLE UTILITY.GreetingsDave Britzius(Cape Town)

MyTraffic 2006 - with Retro AI
For those who haven't heard about it yet, Burkhard Renk has released his new MyTraffic 2006 package and it contains a feature that is quite unique. The program operates very similarly to his earlier versions but this time you have the ability to use it as a "Time Machine" and generate an entire world full of traffic as it was in a paricular year. It's a brilliant concept for those who like to fly older aircraft and would like to have matching AI around them.I have just bought my copy and I can confirm that, believe-it-or-not, it actually works - and brilliantly too.Of course, if you're into AI (like I am), there is still a lot of work ahead of you to replace the some of the supplied aircraft with your own preferred downloads. You can import a lot (but by definition of Retro-AI, not all) of your own customizations of earlier versions of MyTraffic as well.I forsee a lot of repaints appearing on AVSIM for AI models of early passenger jets and Turboprops as a direct result of this program. Here's a link to the Mytraffic Website:http://mytraffic2004.com/version4/If you are upgrading, then before installing, check out the mytraffic support forum as well. There is stuff there you want to know before you upgrade.I have no connection to Burkhard Renk so here's an unbiassed thumbs-up. This add-on is great!GreetingsDave Britzius(Cape Town)

How much scenery can you install?
Thank you all for your replies. If I understand correctly, if I install FS-Genesis mesh for the whole world - I have about 40 CDs from Justin - the FS2004 will perform just as well as if I had installed one such mesh and was currently flying over it? If I then install a whole bunch of landclasses, a host of enhanced cities, all the simflyers airports as well as a few hundred freeware airports then will I still have have a flyable setup?Dave

How much scenery can you install?
Hello allThe lurker (me) has decided to venture out into the light of discussion with the following question.I would like to know if there is any limit to the amount of "scenery" that can be installed. By "scenery", I mean Mesh, Landclass, specific Models and Textures.I have been collecting freeware and payware airports, textures and mesh for quite a while and now I want to populate "my" entire planet with high quality scenery so that on the spur of the moment I can just decide to fly somewhere and know that I will experience the best scenic apearance possible within the limits of FS2004. To put it another way, what I really want to know is whether there is any performance penalty if lots of scenery is installed in other parts of the world which are not in my immediate vicinity. For example, if I have a huge amount of stuff installed in the USA like Megacenery, Manhattan, Simfliers airports etc, and I decide to fly in a relatively sparse area like over some small islands, will my framerates be the same as I would get with no scenery installed in another area?GreetingsDave Britzius(Cape Town)

Joystick with a mind of its own
Hi all,Maybe someone has been plagued with a similar problem and has found what is causing it:Quite simply, when I start up FS9 and load up the default cessna, the joystick won't move the eilerons at all. If I shut down FS and start it up again, the joystick moves them just a small amount (I guess 10% of the full traverse). Now, if I perform the following procedure:1] close the flight and 2] go to "settings" and 3] choose the "assignments" button, and 4] merely select the JOYSTICK AXES tab, 5] click on Pro pedals in the "joystick type" drop-down menu,6] and DO NOTHING7] Click the Seitek X45 in the "joystick type" drop-down menu,9] and DO NOTHING9] Pick OK and then return to select a flightthen the eilerons work perfectly. If I shut down FS and re-start FS (without rebooting) the eilerons either don't work or work only 10% :-madI am commencing a complete fresh re-install of FS on Windows XP SP2 and have installed FS9 and FS9.1 patch. I have installed a licensed copy of FSUIPC and DBS's Walk & Follow. That's all I've done so far. The joystick is a Seitek x45 with the latest drivers installed as well as CH products' USB pedals togetether with their Control manager Version 3.6Otherwise I have fairly high-end hardware which worked fine with FS loaded with addon's before.I suspect a joystick/pedals assignment conflict, but I can't find any conflict. Can anyone help PLEASE - BEFORE I GO NUTS !Greetings

On EXE installers ..
The same problem irritates me as well and I use an old utility called INCTRL 3 which was written for Windows 95 by Neil J. Rubenking of PC Magazine. It was freeware then. (In fact I recall laboriously typing in the code from the pages of the mag - that gives you some idea of how ancient a fossil I am :-) ) Believe it or not it works perfectly with Windows XP and Windows x64.What it does is this:You run INCTRL and specify the install program that you wish to monitor.INCTRL then takes a "snapshot" of all drives that you specify as well as the registry and any .INI files you care to specify. The install program runs and installs whatever it is supposed to. When the entire process is finished, INCTRL asks you to confirm that the entire installation procedure is completed. Then it takes another "snapshot" and compares the diffences and writes out a txt file listing every new file, every changed file and every added entry in the registry. You can save this txt file for future reference. Now you have CONTROL and can manually reverse anything that the install program did. It's a wonderful little utility. The program itself leaves no trace of itself - no registry entry, nothing. It's absolutely clean and leaves no mess behind!I went looking for a link to post here for downloading, but for some reason, ZDNET don't seem to have it on their site. However, I'm sure you can google it somewhere.GreetingsDave Britzius(Cape Town)
