I'm not sure where you get that figure from? At my airport on a gin clear day using the ILS we land around about 40-46 depending on the vortex (wake turbulence) mix. In fact in LVPs with 6 mile spacing we land 24 - 20 is a rediculously low number. So in your example the planes would land 12, 1201.5, 1203 - exactly the same as the US system. Also CFMU isn't down to the minute anyway - the slot itself has a tollerance of -5/+10. In the situation above the flights would only get a slot if for the period the flights were due to arrive more were planned than the airfield had applied flow for. I.e. say Heathrow had flowed at 40, during the period your 3 flights were due to arrive another 30 were planned meaning that in total 33 were planned during that hour - no slot would be applied at all. All 3 could arrive at Heathrow at 1200 and identically to the US system the flights would get vectored/speed controllered to achieve 12, 01.5 and 03.

It's impossible to do a like for like view between the US and Europe when it comes to delay management. The US is one big agency with a plethora of airspace, Europe is made of tens of ANSPs all with minute airspace in comparision. I guess having the worlds busiest single and duel runway airports we must be doing something bordering on efficient .

In normal operations we work to the wake turbulance minima so generally down to 3nm (medium followed by medium or anything bigger). If there is a bit of a headwind and the weather allows it we reduce this to 2.5 mile spacing. With the catchup from 4 miles it's not unusual for the first to be touching down and the 2nd within 2 miles from touchdown. I believe our stats average out to 1 go-around a day over the course of the year. Obviously you may go 4/5 days with non and then on a bad weather day have 4 or 5 in a row.

Landing clearances (USA) while runway occupied
Experience: A controller at one of the EU airports mentioned quite a lot throughout this thread. I don't have any problems with R/T congestion not clearing aircraft to land until the one ahead has vacated, any controller should be able to control their frequency. I cleared plenty of aircraft today to land in the circa 100/200ft area and every single one of them landed without any issue - even the American carriers! I like the fact that the default fallback option is to go-around, there is no ambiguity - you don't have a clearance to land, go-around - period. We can use a form of anticipated separation in the form of a "land after", however the important aspect is that it is not a clearance. If we're going to enter a 'mines bigger, busier, more complex, prettier, smells nicer, etc contest'; Heathrow is closed 2330-0600 therefore we plan at around 75 planes an hour and depending on whether it's busy/quiet hour that can go 60/90 - I think the record still stands at 102. That's all from 2 runways - I've got no idea how many places like Atlanta use, however it's not just the amount of planes or concrete the complexity of the airspace, availablity of diverging tracks, etc all make a difference. I think most people who work in ATC don't particularly care how many planes somewhere else shifts - it's all about doing your job as safely, ordely and expeditiously as possible. My only real concern is that anticipated separation works on the fact that the crews do as instructed and expected, which isn't always the case. That said I am sure if I'd trained the otherside of the pond I could easily do a hazard analysis and come up with a multitude of reasons as to why anticipated separation is better.

Is th 737- series a "Heavy"
Hello,In the UK we classify the 757 as an upper medium, along with the following types - B707, DC8, IL62 and VC10.There is no increase in departure separations, although quite a few airlines/crew require 2 minutes behind rather than the official minimum of 1 minute. Arrival separation is increased, generally by a mile, for anything in the groups below (lower medium, small and light).All 737s are lower mediums. You can get some interesting catch-up with a 738/9 following something like a A319 though!
