  1. Ok I figured out why I was using 1.4GB while most others are <1GB, this was due to me running the following nonstandard config: 1920x1080 WideViewAspect=False Zoom: 0.3 I had been running those settings for the last year or two to avoid the slight bit of stretch I noticed when using WideViewAspect=True Zoom: 0.4 But tonight I reverted to that more normal setting to test something and lo and behold I saw my VRAM usage go down to 800MB-950MB in that same S43/C90/Rainy scenario. So I guess I will stop using the nonstandard config, mystery solved, weird that the VRAM usage differs so much with WideViewAspect=False though.
  2. Great news, I loved Bernt's FDE for the C310R and recent Carenado planes, and the lack of a Bernt FDE was one reason I was able to hold off on buying the B55 in a tough month of multiple great FSX releases. Good to know you guys and Bernt will be making my ability to keep holding off on the B55 more difficult in the future :D
  3. It was an enjoyable video from my layman's view, reminds me to reinstall the Orbx AU regions which I left out of my recent FSX reinstall since I fly NA PNW mostly. Al you are probably cursed with that knowledge which probably makes watching most youtube videos no fun (not to mention a lot of TV shows), I am glad for my ignorance/bliss :Loser: since I love to watch game videos on youtube, I am often amazed with what folks are able to do with FSX+EZDok+FSRecorder, seeing this from a film school pov must be something like finding out there is no Santa Claus and the presents are just a big commercialized shopping season, I wish I could still be ignorant to how that works too :D
  4. I get those black squares with BP=0 in graphically busy areas (i.e. ORBX), maybe the addition of REX Essentials just pushed you over the edge, the thing that fixed it for me was a suggestion sometime back by a fellow AVSIM poster in the graphics subforum: Try adding the following in your FSX.CFG [Display] section: TextureMaxLoad=30 //stops black squares
  5. I believe you. My FSX install even with recent FSX.CFG rebuild and before and after switching to Word Not Allowed's settings has always maxxed VRAM at Orbx S43 at least according to MSI Afterburner with my previous 5870 and 560 and now uses ~1.4GB as seen in with EVGA PrecisionX just now in the following screenshot: If you guys could just share with me your FSX VRAM weight loss secret I'd kindly appreciate it
  6. Yep part of the reason I made the jump up from the 560/1.2GB to the 670/4GB is so I am free to run the high AA and textures conditions that I normally fly in, glad to finally be able to do that without running out of VRAM... I realize most FSX'ers don't use those settings and like to fly in better weather conditions but I love flying in the realistic weather we have here in the PNW, even if that makes VFR challenging. I'm just glad to be able to have bought a 670/4GB card that can do this for $484, which is much cheaper than the 580/3GB I considered last year before settling on the 560 temporarily.
  7. Hehe I don't think I am doing anything unusual, config per Word Not Allowed's recent recommendations plus: AA mode: 8xS [Combined:1x2 SS + 4 MS] AA Supersampling: 2x Sparse Grid Supersampling TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=4096 LOD_RADIUS=4.500000 REX Clouds 2048 high cloud density 1920x1080 resolution But I do fly mostly in Orbx PNW/S43/W16with real weather (often overcast or rainy) and usually I fly the Carenado C90, Baytower RV7, RealAir Legacy so I'm likely using lots of high resolution textures. Other than that I don't think I'm doing anything unusual :D
  8. I received my EVGA GTX 670 SC 4GB and have posted FSXMark11 results in that thread here: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/329116-fsxmark11/page__st__425#entry2387391 Overall as a single monitor upgrade from my 560Ti/448/1.2GB, it makes FSX feel much smoother and makes those <30 FPS situations much smoother and flyable, and where in the past in certain situations I would see VRAM max out, now I see that the VRAM in use climb to 1.4GB-1.5GB. In the future for triple monitor I think the 4GB VRAM will definitely come into play, which is why I got it.
  9. Now that the 670s 4GB came out I finally made my move as I've been waiting for a good 3 monitor card for other games besides FSX. Same exact system i5-2500k@4.8 16GB (cheap) RAM @1600. Before: GTX560Ti/448 OC 1.2GB VRAM After: GTX670 SC 4GB VRAM So no surprises here both in FSXMark11 and in normal FSX using Word Not Allowed's config, there is not much difference in FPS between the 560Ti/1.2GB and the 670/4GB, but I do notice an notable improvement in overall smoothness and a very flyable smoothness when flying in <30 FPS situations especially with BP=0. Also I used to notice with the 560 with payware airports and aircraft and REX that the VRAM in use would max out, and now with the 670 I notice that VRAM in use is usually 1.4GB-1.5GB in those situations, this being with 8xS/2xSGSS At some point I plan to tackle triple monitor with FSX again where I suspect the 4GB VRAM will really come in handy, but I'm not too optimistic as far as it being what I use all the time in FSX based on my past attempts with a 5870 and seeing that FSX doesn't really allow moving the zoom far enough to make it realistic looking in the VC, so for now the 4GB VRAM is for use in other sims for triple monitor. Anyhow some good GTX 670 and 4GB VRAM data for the FSXMark11 tally.
  10. I'm really enjoying KJAC and CRM now that I have a very detailed base to fly out of and the excellent framerate is definitely great compared to my usual flights in the PNW region. Wow I hadn't heard that, those enhanced little airports are one of my favorite things, I just got done flying from Yellowstone KWYS to a private strip MT48 in Montana and it is so awesome that both those "default" airports had a nice basic runway, fuel and buildings and not the default FSX rectangle to land on. If they don't plan on enhancing all the airports with Orbx lib (one of the things that disappointed me about buying AU after PNW) then I will for sure be passing on the GB series, probably a good thing at this point since I have a lot of NA and NZ to enjoy with those default airports.
  11. I was on the fence too, since this month has been expensive from great long awaited FSX releases, and I already have a couple of other favorite GAs, but I ended up reading the comments and taking the jump and am really glad I did, the immersion flying this plane is terrific, and it jumps to the top of my favorites list and I will be flying this for a long time. Great job RealAir/Rob, and thanks to those that shared their feedback here.
  12. I have one of these 670 4GB cards on pre-order for when they come out in a couple of weeks, I use multi-monitor with high AA/AF and textures outside of FSX and want the 4GB VRAM to give this some legs for the future, for the $489 it will cost I think is is a decent deal for a 4GB card, especially since I saw the 680 4GB retailing at $629 and the 3GB 580s are still $500+. Once it comes out in a few weeks and I get it in my hot little hands I will do a FSXMark2011 like I did with my previous 5870 and now current 560Ti/448, so hopefully will add to the FSX data if nothing else. Worst case if this disappoints I will use the EVGA stepup to go to a 685 if it ever comes out.
  13. Yeah the BeaverX is a great aircraft with a lot of character, it has been one of my favorites for years, but the VC textures are starting to show their age, a new version is supposed to be in the Aerosoft roadmap in the not too distant future (and will be insta-buy for me), so it is a good aircraft, but not really in the caliber of the BroncoX due to age.
  14. Thanks Al for the book recommendation, I've had the BroncoX since release and it is one of my favorites, top quality model, panel and systems, very well done, I picked up the book to enhance my experience with it, the Kindle version of the book is actually on sale for $3! can't beat that: http://www.amazon.co...m=AG56TWVU5XWC2
  15. Indeed! cheers and thanks for the heads up Jean-Paul
  16. Wow just to update things, BP=0 has never worked before with my venotubo tweaked fsx.cfg, but I decided to try letting FSX create a new one and then just doing only the tweaks in Word Not Allowed's new sticky http://forum.avsim.net/topic/370594-software-hardware-guide/ and it the new driver + inspector + tweaks is actually working with BP=0! Really cool.
  17. Unfortunately I am one of those that BP=0 doesn't work for and the update didn't change much for me, c'est la vie... maybe when I get a GTX 685 later this year  Thanks for the heads-up nonetheless.
  18. Yeah I think there was some software update that changed the hierarchy of the forum links, my bookmark for the forum was getting a 404 too and I noticed it is now a different link.
  19. That makes sense Fr. Bill, and I'm glad you guys are still testing that stuff before wider impact especially since the patches are not optional. Here's hoping they do indeed start communicating/interacting on the Steam forums about upcoming fixes and enhancements so those of us interested can stay up to date without you beta testers getting caught in the middle or having to decide what you can or can't share.
  20. Yeah I will definitely hope he gets nominated for the best FSX add-on of 2012. It was also very generous of Pete to add that to the free version so we all could benefit from it without registering. I actually went and registered FSUIPC as a thanks for the CTD fix, never thinking I needed the registered version before, but now that I have it, I found I use it a lot for the aircraft specific joystick/throttle profiles, it is so nice to jump from an airplane to a helicopter and have the throttle/collective axis automatically reverse, it has made me fly helicopters much more often being that I am a lazy person and that step to go to reverse the controls would often make me avoid a helicopter flight :LMAO: I think many scenery designers (Orbx/Aerosoft etc) probably owe many continued sales of their sceneries to the FSUIPC CTD fix.
  21. Yeah exactly, most other game studios these days figure this out and actually use it to their advantage to build a good product following and loyal customer base.
  22. Interesting, so now being informed about upcoming bug fixes and product enhancement are perks only for beta testers but not paying customers? As RoboRay mention this is the kind of one-way and insider-only game customer communication strategy that was fine 10 years ago before social networking or product forums, but today really does much more harm than good. IMHO this is just a continuation of their poor Flight pre-release communications strategy that I had hoped they were learning does no one any good: 1. Keep the pre-release sim or simlite Flight product focus ambiguous in the marketing, ignore the fact that there is a huge loyal following for the series that wants to know if this is FS11 or nothing like it 2. Have a large, very late, closed beta, with a hard NDA that prevents participants from sharing any info about the product, not even the most basic questions to confirm or deny the hopes or misunderstandings of a eager loyal customer base 3. When some of the closed beta testers are disappointed and start breaking the NDA to spill the beans on their disappointment, don't provide any more hard facts about the product to explain or confirm or deny the product focus or included or not included features, allow the NDA breakers to control the tone and perception of the product via leaked youtube videos and posts on forums such as this one causing the community to split and fight itself without any official facts or context 4. After release continue to provide minimal product information or interaction with your new customers about patches or requested enhancements, continue ambiguous corporate speak via interviews and provide direct interaction or communication just only to your closed beta testers, rely on them to leak out the information to your customers. I want to stress that I appreciate the beta testers and I don't have a problem with them getting perks for their hard work, and I am a supporter of Flight and want it to succeed, that is the reason I'm pointing out that their current product development communication/interaction strategy may be rewarding to the beta testers still involved, but it serves to alienate the paying customers like me. Planned patch and enhancement info is not a beta tester perk, it is key information for customers who paid for the existing product and want to know about it so they can decide whether to keep supporting the DLC or not.
  23. I don't have a problem with you guys being beta testers, I'm actually glad there were quality people like you guys who were picked for the beta, I've heard other reports from people who got picked, didn't like Flight and flew for less than an hour but still got free DLC. My beef is that MS continues to use the limited access beta forum to distribute key information customers care about such as the fact that they may be working on TrackIR support (which I was glad to hear finally) and then leave it up to you guys to share or not share that with the great unwashed masses like me who is buying the DLC and helping to pay for that future development. Now that the product is out of beta, they should be able to have an open dialogue with their customers via an official forum that doesn't require customers to depend on second hand info from outside beta testers, it sounds like Steam may have become that forum, I'll start checking there and hope that they share the same future work info there that they do on the beta forum then, I appreciate the heads up.
