  1. OK txs..I'll look into it a little further.
  2. According to the web site , it's not for entertainment and you're supposed to be either a licenced pilot or student. Is there any truth to this (ie do pthers just buy it for pleasure?). I have X-Plane 10 and am wondering if there's any major improvements in P3D over X-Plane , enough to warant buying yet another flight sim. Txs
  3. txs for the feed back. I'll check into what you suggested. Txs again
  4. Not being a RW pilot I have a question about the Cessna 172 in X-Plane vs the one in MSFX. The 172 is supposed to be considered a STABLE trainer. I'm just trying to learn to fly a flight sim seriously (want to get into online VATSIM eventually) but what I've found is that the MSFX 172 is stable. A wee bit of trim to maintain level flight and away you go. You can then concentrate on navigation. In X-Plane the 172 seems to behave more like a Pitts. Take you're eyes of the controls for a second and you're into a bank/dive /climb etc. It seems overly sensitive to control movements. My question are : is the X-Plane 172 more representative of how a real 172 flies , or does MSFX win hands down with this one. If the X-Plane version is more accurate , how can I stabilize it? Right now I'm simply using a joystick and mouse but would like to eventaully move up to a yoke and pedals. Will this make a difference? Txs
  5. NM-found the solution on some WiKi site..copy from nav.dat
  6. Have the latest WED and would like to try my hand at scenery , but thought I'd start with something "simple" -_- like modifying my local airport. Questions are: 1) Can I simply make a copy of the X-Plane 10 data and work with it? If so , how do I find the airport I want? 2) I know the mesh signatures are lat/long. How can I find these numbers using Google Earth? 3) How relevant are the instructions etc. found in the various forums? ie : one set I have outlining file structures/layouts etc are for X-Plane 8 and doesn't seem to have been updated. Txs for any help..
  7. I play other sims (ie: Armed Assault 2 ; Silent Hunter 4 etc.).Armed Assault has nowhere near the number of players (or sales for that matter) that the fast action FPS's such as Call of Duty and Modern Warfare garner. This is MS's target market. Fast action , low learning curve , immediate gratification. That's where the money is.That's where they'll potentially sell hundreds of thousands of games and after market products as well. And after all , for MS and other gaming companies , the $$'s are what they're after.I put my money into X-Plane 10 for a number of reasons but primarily because X-Plane 10 (and Armed Assault 2 for that matter) are more a labour of love and are constantly being patched and improved. And the developers are approachable. As a simmer , I'm slightly disappointed but for MS I see it as a wise business decision.
  8. Bloody AWESOME!!Are you sure that's X-Plane 10??? Looks so real!!Can't wait for mine...
  9. Stick with what I have and not part with any of my hard earned $$'s
  10. Yep-instead of rushing out and buying just sit back and wait until the USER reviews start coming in. ( I don't pay any attention to magazine reviews as they're bought and paid for by the advertisers). The phrase "integrated content marketplace" does make one wonder though whether the speculation that MS will ship a limited (few aircraft and Hawaiian scenery) and happily sell you other aircraft and regions isn't correct.
  11. Think there is some truth here. How else would you explain the animosity between MW3/BF3 , NWN1 / NWN2 , ArmA2 / Operation Flashpoint 2 etc. gamers? All are excellent but for some reason or other , players will argue to the death that the one they have is better. That aside , Sounds like the OP discovers some very interesting X-Plane things and now I'm REALLY looking forward to getting my copy. And NO , I will not delete FSX. It has it's place for now at least.
  12. Been back packing up in the Rockies (around Banf and Jasper) , did the Chilkoot Trail , flown over the range on the way to Vancouver and trust me , when you get up in the mountains , there are no trees. Snow fields , barren rock , some shrubs but that's about all.Suppose some of the lower "mountains" down across the border might have trees but up here we refer to those as "hills"
  13. Good lord..mountains DON'T have trees. Their peaks are ABOVE the tree line. Hills do. Mountains DON'T.
  14. Though in all honesty , X-Plane models the entire planet to some extent while so far , it looks like Flight is Hawaii only. Sure is easier to model a small island in great detail rather then the entire planet. To boot , it sounds as if X-Plane 10 is going to make it MUCH easier to modify your local scenery. So far all I've seen/heard about Flight are the pretty pictures and the MS rhetoric about an entirely different approach to flight simulation. Does this mean X-Box and controllers ported over to a PC??So far my money lies with X-Plane 10 rather than all those shinny thingies MS is showing.
  15. And what does all this have to do with XPlane 10??? Talking about "realism" , "747" , "flight Sims".. so where's your engineer? What about your "navigator"?? You won't get off the ground IRL without a co-pilot! Face it.. it takes longer to learn to simply start a 747 IRL than it does to learn to fly one in XPlane then take it around the world. Guys are having "fun" with a game that kinda simulates RL aircraft so let them play it as they see fit.
  16. So far all I've seen are pretty pictures. Actual game play and physics are a complete unknown. If it's just a bunch of shiny thingies and no improvement on flight characteristics , then it's not going on my computer.
  17. OK so now I've been to 13 parking lots. No luck yet...5 to go... :(
  18. Oh look..pretty shiny thingies. So far all I've seen are rendered screen shots. Pretty graphics , true , but are you looking for a game or a flight simulator?Ever seen the graphics used in West Jets 737 simulator? Deplorable by gaming standards but then it's intent is to TRAIN pilots , not dazzle then with overhead views. Nice to have both for sure , but I'd sacrifice pretty pictures for more accurate flight modeling and controls.I learned my lesson quit a few years ago and now adopt a wait and see attitude whenever new games are released. This (considering it's MS well noted for their cash grabs)is probably a pass , especially with X-Plane 10 just over the horizon.
  19. Not familiar with FSUIPC but reading their site , it seems to me it is designed more for managing add ons than what I'm trying to accomplish. The couple of short cuts method described in the article I found seems the easiest. Name one "FSX - Joystick" and one "FSX-Yoke" and that's all you need.Haven't tried it yet but plan to shortly and will report back (unless someone else already has). Also figure that with this step :..In folder "...\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\", open file "FSX-Config1.cfg" and search for the lineControls_Current=Standardand change it toControls_Current=FSX-Config1you could create the two lines and simply comment out the one you don't want to use.A simple short cut to this file would open it in Notepad easily enough.
  20. I found this after I figured out what search parameters to use in Google :( Of course I can't take credit for it .. and haven't tried it yet..but seems plausible.
  21. My understanding is that selection simply tells FSX to look for various controllers , but the cfg file dictates what buttons perform what function..could be wrong though..
  22. Tried searching but couldn't find what I was looking for.Sometimes I just want a quick go round with a simple joy stick.Sometimes I will want to take the time to set up my newly acquired yoke and throttle quadrant or a joystick / throttle quadrant configuration (depending on the plane).I have configured the controls for my joystick and it's buttons but would like to configure all those nifty little buttons, switches etc. on the CH Yoke but they are all different to my joystick.I'm afraid I'll end up overwriting my control cfg , then the joystick wont work as I want. :( Is there a way to create multiple configuration files?:( I figure what I could try doing is configuring the joystick then copying that XML file , rename it , creating a default XML file , configure for joystick/throttle quadrant , copy and rename it. Do the same for the yoke/quadrant combo then before I start the game , I could rename the controls.cfg to something else , rename the config file I want to use to controls.cfg and start. This seems like such a mickey moused procedure considering most games now allow different "profiles". I was wondering if there is a small utility or feature in MS FSX that would simplify this process.Txs
  23. I don't see .NET 2.0 in my program listing but since FSX runs fine as so other programs that require .NET I'm assuming it's built into Win7 64.
  24. I've been trying to install the SDK , read the instructions but don't see the "Tools" menu in game. Running Win7 64 and MS FSX Deluxe Edition SP2 I've downloaded the following files.. SDK SP 1a .exe; SDK.msi (which I was pointed to as SDK SP2). First thing I did was install the SDK from the original game DVD. Then I installed SDK SP 1a .exe (which told me it was removing prior versions). Then I installed SDK.msi which also told me it was removing prior version. (this one had a nice pretty picture). I tried both "quick flights" and "missions" but never did see the "Tools" menu. The SDK is installed in : "C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft GamesMicrosoft Flight Simulator X SDK" The game itself is installed in: "F:MSFS X" Am I missing something? Any ideas as to where I may have screwed things up? Txs.
