  1. I am assuming the count did not go up for the Canadian airports? I am pretty sure when I landed at a closed airport east of Wasilla (Jacob's Mine or something) it added to my unique airport number.
  2. I prefer Flight hands-down but the type of flying I want to do in a sim is different than a lot of gamers. Honestly, using Flight really helped me in my flight training since the RV acts a lot like a Piper Warrior. I basically learned everything I know about IFR from Flight since the VOR and ILS are pretty accurate and even some of the challenges require you to fly IFR down to runway minimums. No, you cannot fly an A380 5,000 miles but who really wants to do that more than once. Instead you have over 600 airports, some that have AMAZING detail to fly into and do jobs if you want. Also I like the multiplayer function and you can fly with some of us if you want. Like AHC said, you can download Flight for free and try out the basics (you may notice that even the most basic aircraft -ICON- has a moving map you can turn on and even the transponder shows you current altitude. That is a lot of realism in my book. So try it and see. You will either love the detail and options or hate that you cannot fly to LAX. Personally, I have been to LA almost 100 times and I would prefer to visit Alaska or Hawaii any day. Fly safe and have fun. kyle
  3. Did you do the Port Clarence LORAN cache? I was flying around there the other day and I have a habit of looking up what the airports actually are alike on FlyQ Pocket (awesome app by the way). The FAA remarks had an advisory about a "1372 ft (AGL) tower 5000 ft WSW FM S END". That made no sense to me so I took off and as I turned to the south, my graphics card decided to wake up and BOOM it was there. Then the aerocache went off and I was like "dang! I was gonna submit this!!" Oh, speaking of Port Clarence, have you seen the video of the tower coming down a few years ago? Just in case.....
  4. How many airports do you have? I know you are organizing the all Alaska hops which I really want to participate in if time allows. Watching some of these guys do touch and go's at the 800 feet runways (and getting all 3 wheels down so it counts) will be a lot of fun. We did a few group flights on the airports around Wasilla and it was always an adventure seeing how many attempts it took to do a full stop landing and then take off again after everyone was on the ground. Oh, cubs were not allowed :-)
  5. Hate that I missed this one Steve. Are you still submitting aerocaches or did they stop accepting them?
  6. I know when Flight was first released, we talked about some churches that were modeled. I found this possible church while following Highway 3 from Wasilla to Willow. This is right north of Nancy Lake. Just wondered if this was based on an actual building since it is in a random spot. Still love coming across random things in this game.
  7. AK24 My fave still shows as the Maule. Even though I fly the Police RV-6 constantly. Must have been all those clandestines back even before Alaska. You use custom paint jobs, right? Bet it counts every one as unique.
  8. Just landed at unique airport number 444. Coincidentally, the airport name is Hilltop which is fitting for me since students at my hometown college (WKU) are known as the Hilltoppers. This airport was tricky with all the houses nearby but was rather flat which was surprising given the name. Where is everyone else among unique airports? Have you focused on the seaplane bases yet? That is one area I have not hit yet. Will post again at 500. Has taken many hours to get to 444 so that could be a while from now. Take care and fly safe. kyle
  9. RoboRay, I wondered the same thing after they released season 2 on NetFlix. Does Crusader have contact info either on here or on Steam?
  10. Getting some of these warbirds on the 800 ft runways will be lots of run, especially with the proximal trees. :-) Very much looking forward to joining if I can. The past flight was a lot of fun.
  11. Yeah I am surprised at how the tree shapes and building types change. Of course, I am still trying to wrap my head around some of the cities in Canada being so detailed when there is not even an airport. Realize that some is adapted from FSX but mysteries like this boggle the mind. I am going to start doing this when I locate neat items: stop, park and change the season. Could be an amusing thread on day,. Oh, I have been in Denver for a few days so I missed the daily caches. Where is the tractor?
  12. Lot of us have been making sure to get all the Iditarod checkpoints. As mentioned, the race is underway as we speak. A Cessna 182 that stopped in Merrill from Anchorage and then was making its way to Takotna never arrived. Speculation is that these people may have been related to the race. One of my best friends moved from Phoenix to Anchorage last year to be a reporter for one of the major stations. This will be his story tonight and it will soon be released that the plane was reportedly found at Simpson Pass with no survivors. Microsoft gave us a beautiful place to explore and fly. Let us not forget that many places there are only accessible by air and merely going from one city to another can be a risky endeavor for residents. May we honor them.
  13. My computer has an issue (I believe hardware failure but the company refuses to believe me until I do a system restore) that will require a full restore. Which files must be backed up to ensure I do not lose all my stats, planes and accomplishments in Flight?
  14. So 702 in Alaska and 36 (or 39, cannot remember) in Hawaii means max of 738 max unique airports? Wow, not sure I have the time (or patience) for that. Maybe a goal of 500 is more my style :-)
  15. This has been discussed before but I cannot find the topic. I have landed at 401 unique airports. Exactly how many airports are there? Do we know how many are land vs sea? I have not started the hunt for all the seabases yet but that will be next. This has taken a lot of time but I still run across interesting things all the time. Even started googling some of the remote airports to learn about the unique villages of Alaska. Been a great thing.
  16. With a little headwind (10+ kts), full flaps and a full elevator on short final, she would make it. Now I have to put my money where my typing is and actually try.
  17. If only the thing could actually turn. Guess flying straight for 7 hours is perfect for the beast.
  18. May have to try one of my stall/short field landings with my trusty RV-6
  19. We had a pretty large debate about this back when we accidentally discovered the AMAZING detail just southeast of Kodiak airport. You can get out and walk into store entrances that have trash cans, recycling and door handles. You can see the sweeper trucks and they even have port-a-john's. We never decided why some spots have this complex detail and why some areas have trees when it is basically barren. Same seems to be true here too. You have the standard forestry which does not look quite accurate for the region and then this circular golf course with pristine detail. Wish people were still around to answer these questions.
  20. If you ever get to Alaska, you MUST MUST MUST go through this tunnel. I found it by complete accident driving from Homer to Anchorage. Saw a sign that said "glacier" and thought I would check it out and then I see this weird tunnel that actually cost money to drive through. One lane, over 2 miles long, and a combined rail and road tunnel. Train actually delayed us going through and then you realize that you are driving through the same tunnel that a train just used. Very neat stuff. @Mattneffer - this tunnel was built in World War II. Before then you had to cross the glacier which was very deadly. The tunnel allowed American ships to use the Whittier side and protected against a potential Japanese blockade (at least that is how I understand it).
  21. Tonight I was hitting random airports and decided I wanted to find an airport at the base of a hill or mountain. I jumped about 15 miles south of Healy River in squall weather so I was peaking at 40 knot cross winds. All of a sudden after a go around at low altitude, I saw smoke and a light. This has probably been covered before but the detail astonished me of this smoke stack (whatever it is supposed to be). Just making a point that even at the most random times, I find something that makes me go, "neat".
  22. I still read the posts when something catches my eye. Played the game every day and now only once every 2 weeks. I was up to about 300 airfields when I stopped playing all the time. Imagine if I had kept at it.....
  23. This really made me laugh. Almost made me want to start over and go from the top.... Almost, not quite.
  24. Not a bad challenge. I guess since the thing REFUSES to turn even with full rudder and ailerons that it is fair it will also not slow down even without thrust. Thanks for the idea!
