June 18, 201312 yr So today I was just thinking of FSX and how it isn't the best in a lot of ways. From what I've heard, Flight is quite similar, but I do want to try it out for low & slow. *DISCLAIMER* Many comparisons to FSX will be made in both the questions and answers. *DISCLAIMER* 1) Do joysticks/throttles work with Flight? 2) Are ground and sky textures more realistic [compared to FSX], along with autogen [buildings, houses, bridges etc]? 3) Are key landmarks worldwide featured? 4) How well are airports represented? [in terms of both realism to the actual airport, and compared to FSX's sub-par representation, generally.] 5) What aircraft are included? 6) Are multiple models supported? [EX Piper Cub --> A380], or is it generally a single class of aircraft? 7) How are flight plans controlled/created/modified? 8) Is there payware/freeware aircraft available either on the AVSIM file library or on a third party website? 9) Are there any aircraft available that still fly? [i ask this because of the futuristic aircraft shown in screenshots!] 10) What's performance like [in comparison to FSX, of course!]? BONUS QUESTION: For those of you who switched or use both FSX and Flight, are you glad about that decision? Is there anything that killed/made your experience in comparison? Thanks for the information, I couldn't find any of this information from any other source so I will turn to my favorite community for that! Regards, Jeremy Chesney
June 18, 201312 yr You've basically asked for an entire treatise on Microsoft Flight which will be very difficult to provide. I suggest you download the free version which is limited in area and it should answer some of your questions. As far as having additional d/l aircraft and regions, that is not possible at this time. Performance compared to FSX will be up to you to determine. All systems are different but I think you'll find that Flight is much smoother on the same system than FSX. Graphics and weather rendition are also much better. Aircraft types are limited and all are piston type for the Icon to the C46. No turbo props or jets. Only Alaska and Hawaii are available as geographic regions. Try it. You might like it. Thank you. June 18, 201312 yr I prefer Flight hands-down but the type of flying I want to do in a sim is different than a lot of gamers. Honestly, using Flight really helped me in my flight training since the RV acts a lot like a Piper Warrior. I basically learned everything I know about IFR from Flight since the VOR and ILS are pretty accurate and even some of the challenges require you to fly IFR down to runway minimums. No, you cannot fly an A380 5,000 miles but who really wants to do that more than once. Instead you have over 600 airports, some that have AMAZING detail to fly into and do jobs if you want. Also I like the multiplayer function and you can fly with some of us if you want. Like AHC said, you can download Flight for free and try out the basics (you may notice that even the most basic aircraft -ICON- has a moving map you can turn on and even the transponder shows you current altitude. That is a lot of realism in my book. So try it and see. You will either love the detail and options or hate that you cannot fly to LAX. Personally, I have been to LA almost 100 times and I would prefer to visit Alaska or Hawaii any day. Fly safe and have fun. kyle

From what I've heard, Flight is quite similar, but I do want to try it out for low & slow. *DISCLAIMER* Many comparisons to FSX will be made in both the questions and answers. *DISCLAIMER* 1) Do joysticks/throttles work with Flight? Yes. I bought a joystick from the Thrift Store for $5.00. Yes... $5.00 and .25 cents tax...lol It is a Logitech Wingman Extreme Digital 3D Flight Joystick (J-AZ10 I believe) and it is older than dirt as far a joystick... but it does get "recognized" by MS Flight when you go to configure your buttons if you want to. Flying with a joystick is much more cooler than flying with a keyboard and mouse.... but don't knock it. I completed all of the Gold challenges with that mouse. It was a bear too!...lol 2) Are ground and sky textures more realistic [compared to FSX], along with autogen [buildings, houses, bridges etc]? Don't have FSX 3) Are key landmarks worldwide featured? Not worldwide, however in Hawaii you can visit the Arizona Memorial and the battleships AND the submarine nearby. :Big Grin: 4) How well are airports represented? [in terms of both realism to the actual airport, and compared to FSX's sub-par representation, generally.] I have never flown a real plane but I can tell you from riding in a couple the planes to have very realistic movements, sounds, etc. 5) What aircraft are included? When I first stumbled upon MS Flight I had seen the advertisement for the FREE.... yes FREE P-51 Mustang Red Tails. I was so excited I almost fell over...lol. If you don't have it go to right NOW http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Microsoft-Flight/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d8044d5308d2, Also the Icon. That link will show you all of the planes that are available. All the rest of the planes are fee based as well as the Alaska Pack (which gives you free planes if you order from www.steampowered.com (then go to Microsoft Flight.) 6) Are multiple models supported? [EX Piper Cub --> A380], or is it generally a single class of aircraft? 7) How are flight plans controlled/created/modified? If you are free flying.. no flight plans unless you do your own. If you fly missions within the game you get a "yellow carrot" on your screen that says "Destination" 8) Is there payware/freeware aircraft available either on the AVSIM file library or on a third party website? The only ones are from http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Microsoft-Flight/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d8044d5308d2 and www.steampowered .com (Then go to Microsoft Flight.) 9) Are there any aircraft available that still fly? [i ask this because of the futuristic aircraft shown in screenshots!] This only occurs during "Multi-Player" within MS Flight. It happens when say for example everyone has the C-46 Curtiss Commando and you do not have it purchased and installed on your system...then you will show up as a "Triangle"...lol 10) What's performance like [in comparison to FSX, of course!]? BONUS QUESTION: For those of you who switched or use both FSX and Flight, are you glad about that decision? Is there anything that killed/made your experience in comparison? Thanks for the information, I couldn't find any of this information from any other source so I will turn to my favorite community for that! See my red letter replies in your quote. I fly just about every day to get the Aerocaches of the Day when I have time. There is also if you have any skills in painting on the computer there is AddonBuilder (And AddonManager respectively (found at www.flighttoolkit.com) so that you can install others' liveries that they made or your own. These are free liveries that you can download from the AVSIM Library (hint...hint...I am trying to break 50 downloads for my Flyin' Whale...lol) I happened to make a whale as seen here: Here are some other screenshots: Ohhh... and by the way... DO NOT mess with Sasquatch in Alaska... So literally, you can have as much or not as much fun as you want. Really a lot of the excitement came from trying to complete those pesky and illusive challenges...lol So... welcome to Flight and enjoy :p0503: <- (My absolute fave smiley just because its cool...lol) -fryer
June 18, 201312 yr Been using Flight on a laptop for a couple of months as my "away from home" simulator. Flying the RV7 and HI scenery has been pretty satisfying from a simulator perspective. The missions, jobs, aero-caches, etc. are a nice break from "simming" I already had an extra joystick and headphones so my total investment was only $20. A VERY good deal. "vanilla Flight" is much better than "vanilla FSX" no tweaking required.

Thanks for the information, I couldn't find any of this information from any other source so I will turn to my favorite community for that! 1. A variety of joysticks are available for configuring, as well as throttle quadrants and other things you may want to hook up. 2. Autogen is much better than default FSX. Sky is also better, especially on some weather themes, but not all. 3. In the 2 areas of the world that are included (Alaska and Hawaii) a variety of landmarks are modeled and shown in Flight. 4. Airports are rather well represented in comparison to default FSX. 5. Several aircraft are included, free ones are the Boeing PT-17 Stearman and the Icon A5. Purchasable ones include the P-40 Warhawk, A6M2 Zero, RV-6A, and Carbon Cub. 6. It's single class piston aircraft. Overall not very fast, good for low/slow flying. 7. Imagination  I've heard that GPlan is compatible with Flight, although I can't personally confirm this. 8. At this point in time, no, there are no 3rd party aircraft. However, there are a wide variety of different liveries for existing aircraft. 9. Many aircraft included in Flight are still flying. I think the one you saw was the Icon A5, which is a sports aircraft rather new to the aviation world. Carbon Cubs and RV-6s still fly, as do some warbirds in airshows. 10. I'll take performance as meaning how is the game engine. Personally i find it very good next to FSX, performs well on medium-high graphics on my extremely sub-par computer. Bonus. I was extremely happy with my decision. However the one thing that kind of killed the experience was the cancellation of production. That was a real downer. However I still fly now and then.
June 19, 201312 yr I would say to the OP forget about Flight, it's a dead end. No 3party support so you only get what Microsoft made before ditching the platform(no ATC, no live weather, no airliners, no photoreal areas, no good twin engine aircrafts etc etc). I would look into X-plane or FSX. With 3party addons I think the graphics looks way better than MS Flight. Offcourse this is just my opinion. But if you still can get it for free you could try it and see for yourself.
June 19, 201312 yr If you want low and slow with out a lot of expensive addons to make it look decent I would say that Flight is the way to go. Of course this is just my opinion. Out of the box, it can not be beat.

There are a few areas in the default scenery that are photoreal, well blended and color matched to the default landclass.
June 19, 201312 yr There are a few areas in the default scenery that are photoreal, well blended and color matched to the default landclass. Could you show me with a screenshoot? If you want low and slow with out a lot of expensive addons to make it look decent I would say that Flight is the way to go Yes, agree if you only would like to fly in Alaska or Hawaii with limited amount of planes to choose from and no ATC,no live traffic, no live weather and don't care that new planes will never get released, sure it's the way to go. B)
June 19, 201312 yr @kabuki Have you ever installed or used MS Flight? Your meta-argument about it being a "dead end" piece of software has no validity in assessing the utility, quality, or value of the software for the OP. Your tone is much more contrary than helpful. @Pandanator 2 has presented a more targeted analysis without the judgmental tone. Do you need to be in this thread? Your meta-argument about it being a "dead end" piece of software has no validity in assessing the utility, quality, or value of the software for the OP. Yes I have even bought Alaska and some plane AddOns. Im just responding to the OP because he asked: For those of you who switched or use both FSX and Flight, are you glad about that decision? Is there anything that killed/made your experience in comparison? So those things I mentioned killed it for me.... Why can't I have my opinion and is it just Flight fboys that can give opinions in this thread  I had hopes for flight while it still was in progress that hope got killed when MS decided not to develop it further and also that they cut out 3party devs... And my arguments are valid because they are facts Im not bashing Im telling the truth....
June 19, 201312 yr Author Thanks to everyone who posted. To keep this thread from becoming a bashing of Flight, I'm going to pick a post to mark as solved. Thank you, I am downloading it currently, and will try it out! Regards, Jeremy Chesney
June 19, 201312 yr Interesting you think that only "Flight boys" find value with MSFlight. I use Flight for about 2 hours every week and it has been worth every penny of the $20 I've spent. My ratio of "flying" time to "tweaking" time with MSFlight vs. FSX is more than enough to suggest MSFlight as an investment in time and money. From your opinion, it sounds like you surely have uninstalled that piece of trash. My MSFS 2020 repaints: Flightsim.to - Profile of HStreet Working on MSFS 2024 versions.
