  1. Hi all, I've just pulled the trigger and ordered some parts to start building my B737 home cockpit. While waiting for parts to arrive, I have to build my main PC which will be used for P3D, add-ons and ProSim. I'm leaning towards the following hardware: Case: Cooler Master Mastercase5 M/B: Asus ROG Maximus VIII Impact CPU: i7 6700K 4 GHz RAM: G.Skill RipjawsV (2 x 8 GB) DDR4 3200 MHz GPU: EVGA GTX 1070 PSU: Corsair 650 W 80+ Gold CS650M Modular Cooler: Corsair Hydro H80i GT SSD 1: Samsung 750 EVO 120 GB (for OS only) SSD 2: Samsung 750 EVO 250 GB (for P3D, add-ons, ProSim) My questions: I will overclock the CPU to 4.5 - 4.6 GHz. Is the cooler enough to handle it or should I choose a bigger one? I want to use 3 monitors 24" or 2 monitors 40" only for outside view. Will that be possible with that hardware? Will Windows 7 run ok with that configuration or should I go for Windows 10? All opinions and suggestions are much appreciated. Thank you in advance! Alex
  2. Hi all, I'm still very new to simming and am absolutely loving it. Being a real world Commercial Pilot is great but being able to do everything so realistic from my bedroom is also great! Now I'm currently running my FSX SE off of a laptop which is just not doing the job anymore with all the add-ons I've bought so I'm looking to build my first PC. After careful research I've come up with a list of components that I think would suit the job and as I'm not the smartest cookie in the jar when it comes to PC components I thought I'd give you guys a list to check over and see whether you can give me tips where I could save money on components or have alternative components that are just as good and for around the same price. All information will be taken on board and I greatly appreciate all your opinions! My current list of parts I was thinking to buy is as follows: - Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor - Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler - Asus Z170-A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard - G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory - Samsung 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive - Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive - Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070 8GB G1 Gaming Video Card - EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply - Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer - Corsair Air Series SP120 High Performance Edition (2-Pack) 62.7 CFM 120mm Fans Still undecided: - Monitor x 2 - ATX Case - Operating System ANY HELP/TIPS/INFORMATION/OPINIONS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. Thank you all in advance! Jordan EDIT: Still also undecided on what kind of Joy Stick! I currently have a logitech extreme 3D but looking to get a new one and some rudder pedals!
  3. Greetings! I am building a new PC. I have been away from Flight Sim for 3-4 years (pre Steam and pre p3d). My new build will be for FSX Steam, but I also do Photoshop and Video editing. I anticipate using FSX Steam, PDG 737, Orbix, Rex, most all of the goodies. I am guessing my system will be overkill for Flight Sim, but would like confirmation of that. I will be overclocking the CPU. This is my third build of a system. As I only build system every 4 years or so, I am going high end. I respect the contributors on AvSim and hope for some feedback. Thanks guys! This is my current wish list: CPU: Intel i7-6700 MSI Graphics Card GTX 980 gaming 4g ASUS ROG Maximus VIII HERO Motherboard 2 - Samsung 850 EVO 500GB 2.5 inch SSD G.Skill Ripjaws 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 SDRAM EVGA SuperNOVA 850 Watt G2 80+ Gold Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 Mid Tower Case Corsair Hydro Series H100i GTX CPU Cooler Windows 10 Home 64 bit system builder OEM Don Maxwell
  4. I have decided that i would like to build a computer for X-Plane 10 as it simply does not run on my PC. My budget is around £600-£700 and have created a list of parts for a system on PCPartPicker and would like some feedback on how it will perform running X-Plane on pretty high settings. I am wondering if an SSD accelerated setup would help boot times etc, if it would be worth it, but have no clue how to do it, what SSD to use ETC. I may in the future overclock but only if I desire higher performance which is why there are overclockable components. I only use a single monitor. The List: PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor (£177.78 @ Scan.co.uk) Motherboard: Asus Z87I-Pro Mini-ITX Mini ITX LGA1150 Motherboard (£119.84 @ Scan.co.uk) Memory: Corsair Vengeance LP 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (£66.96 @ Scan.co.uk) Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (£45.20 @ Scan.co.uk) Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 660 2GB Video Card (£154.39 @ Scan.co.uk) Case: BitFenix Prodigy (Black) Mini ITX Tower Case (£69.95 @ Aria PC) Case Fan: BitFenix Spectre Pro LED 156.3 CFM 230mm Fan (£16.99 @ Amazon UK) Power Supply: Corsair CX 500W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply (£47.23 @ Amazon UK) Total: £698.34 (Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.) (Generated by PCPartPicker 2014-01-13 20:03 GMT+0000) Any help on how to make it cheaper without compromising performance etc would be great!
  5. Hey everyone! I've been wanting to build a computer for a little over three years now, however I have never had the money and i've always had something come up which stopped me. After about a year of putting money aside I now have about $1,000 saved up for a computer and i'm going to treat myself finally. I plan on using my PC for mainly FSX with heavy addon use such as REX, AI Traffic, Fly tampa, and PMDG and I want to be able to run this game on high settings and have the game run smoothly. I also plan on playing other games such as Rail sim, take on helicopters, Assassins creed III(comes free with my 660), and other high performing games. This will be my first time building a computer, I have talked to a few friends for advice and I have a somewhat draft of my final system build so I wanted to ask if anyone on here could offer some criticism, or suggestions on what I can improve on. I have to say i'm very excited for this build, I have not played flight sim in over a year! When I did play flightsim it was on a slow computer which could not run FSX which sadly stopped me from using the NGX. Here is my list so far for my PC. PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($169.99 @ Microcenter) CPU Cooler: Zalman CNPS9500 AT Ball Bearing CPU Cooler ($31.99 @ Newegg) Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($144.99 @ Newegg) Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($49.99 @ Newegg) Storage: Samsung 840 Series 120GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($94.99 @ Microcenter) Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 660 Ti 2GB Video Card ($277.55 @ Newegg) Case: Corsair 300R ATX Mid Tower Case ($69.99 @ Newegg) Power Supply: Corsair Enthusiast 650W 80 PLUS Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($69.99 @ Newegg) Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer ($16.99 @ Newegg) Monitor: Asus VH236H 23.0" Monitor ($149.99 @ Newegg) Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (OEM) (64-bit) ($89.98 @ Outlet PC) Total: $1166.44 (Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.) (Generated by PCPartPicker 2013-01-01 13:27 EST-0500) What do you think? Will I be able to fly the 737NGX in the VC into payware airports with AI traffic running as well as REX? I can't wait to finally use the NGX!
  6. Well- FSX is currently installing so I thought I'd take a few minutes and share my new build with the forum while I hurry up and wait. The below was documented throughout the build, so forgive any strange 'tenses', and as for the shoddy photography... well, it doesn't help any but I did try :-) A few weeks ago (after I unexpectedly found out I was getting an actual tax return this year), I decided to take the plunge and build a new PC. I've been running on my trusty Phenom II x4 build since 2008ish and have been waiting for the day to finally make the switch to Intel. Case and such: Corsair Carbide Series Air 540 Black Cube Case NZXT HUE RGB Led Controller (I tell myself every build to not go flashy... turns out I'll always be a kid when it comes to lighty things) Enermax Revolution X't 730W PSU ASUS OEM 24X DVD Burner The Goodies: ASRock Z87 Extreme3 MOBO Intel Core i5-4670K Haswell CPU PNY GTX 780 with reference cooler/clocks (I went with reference because I'll be cooling with an exhausting radiator at the top and figured the rear exhausting cooler on this card would keep internal case temps down to provide my rad with cooler air. Wrong thinking? Maybe, but it's also on sale at the Egg for 479) ADATA XPG 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3 1600 (9 timings) Storage: Crucial M500 240GB 1TB dead storage WD Green 7200 RPM drive Cooling: XSPC Raystorm AX240 Water Cooling Kit w/ D5 Photon A few fittings and such. Parts all arrived except for memory and cooling. Ontrac left them on the porch in the rain. Luckily they sent me an email stating my package had been delivered and I was able to run home from work and move them inside. Still, leaving 1400 dollars on the porch in the rain, in packages with New Egg logos all over them is concerning to me. I don't know why an adult signature is required for the memory that is coming in via UPS, but all the high dollar components are fine to leave on the porch in packages that scream, "I'M EXPENSIVE!", on them. First look shows some minor shipping damage on the Corsair Carbide 540's SSD cage. The cage assembly itself is not impressive, and rather flimsy. I removed the hotswap cable for one of the HDD sleds up front as I won't have room for two drives due to the cooling reservoir. I thought I could make an air filter out of the bag the case came in to at least mask the ugly holes in the bottom and prevent dust from coming through them. I haven't decided what to do about a frame yet though, since without one it will not seal (at least not if attached in a way that enables them to be removed again... kind of important for a part that is meant to get dirty). It fits the hole anyway, and a mock up with some magnets looked better than without it. After looking at the unappealing and empty tray sitting there on the bottom, I am at an impasse on how to deal with it. It likely won't be too visible with the reservoir in front of the empty, but I don't like it anyway... Dropping the processor: Motherboard mounted, video card test fit: Plumbing arrived before the memory. I think I'm going to vinyl wrap the silver part of the video card's shroud white to match the rest of the build. Also not sure I dig the rear exhaust fan hanging off the back, but after weighing my options for res mount locations this is my favorite. I sat and stared at the funnel for probably half an hour, chain smoking on a fake cigarette and thinking to myself, "Okay, now just pour water into your brand new computer." Completely nerve racking. The reservoir light is white btw even though it looks blue in the pic. POST! Hours of software ahead, then on to overclocking. Some modifications were necessary to hook up all the fans since I have no room for a controller up front. Three generations of nerd: And a few shots of the "finished" (usable anyway) build: Blue LEDs in the waterblock will be swapped out for white. Radioshack didnt have any 3mms except red and blue in stock. Another idea, anyone have any luck wiring up additional RGBs to the HUE?
