The Board of Directors of AVSIM and our global staff are pleased to welcome back Doug Horton as Contributing Editor. Doug became hooked on flight simulation in 1990 and he wrote reviews for Avsim in our early days. Our hobby led him to achieve private pilot certification in 2000, an instrument rating a few months later, and he’s been writing exclusively for flight simulation magazines since then. Doug is returning to Avsim, where he will focus initially on writing reviews about hardware for flight simulation, from computer components to displays and other accessories; an area of reviews that we definitely want to increase our tempo with, and one that we are confident that Doug can deliver. A little bit of Doug's background; after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy, Doug became a nuclear submarine officer, where he believes he spent about 10,000 hours underwater. After 25 years combined active and reserve service, he’s a retired Navy Captain, and subsequently, he’s served as a corporate executive, consulting engineer, and professional speaker on engineering topics. Doug holds graduate degrees in engineering and business, and he currently flies a nicely equipped Cessna 182S with several co-owners, based at Chicago Aurora Municipal Airport (KARR). With a few add-on gauges and control panel modifications, Doug simulates flying the same airplane in FSX. You’ve likely seen and met him at several Avsim conventions, including the most recent in Wichita. From all of us at AVSIM, we’re glad to say, “Welcome back Doug!”

WELCOME EVERYONE! First and foremost I want to apologize if this is lengthy, but hey it's some cool stuff! We realize there are a ton of informational sites out there in the sim world, and each and every one of them offers great and amazing work, we're not here to replace any of that at all! We believe, as the 'Murican's do, a competitive market is a healthy market, and if we can all bring worthiness to the table, then we say why not! Our objectives differ in some ways from others and are similar as well, we'll be keeping you up to date with news without any extra necessary spam, just come check us out here on our Fan Page or our website! We want to explain a few features were in development with: Knowledge base information or FAQ questions; simply type what you're looking for, and our mini Google search will do its best to get you going. E.g search "EZDOK" and all help files and configs will be ready available in your search results. We are fine tuning this at the moment. Were also working on a calendar style "Fly-With-Me" page, where you all may sign up and view each other's flight times, making it easier to group flight or make group flights eventful--we will try to have ACARS programs that are already functioning work with this schedule feature (somehow)... Look forward to a lot of giveaways as we're going to be working closely with some sponsors and markets we have been talking with over the course of this year. Keep in mind our current available site is VERY beta, but we decided to launch it knowing full well you guys would help with shedding a light on a few bugs out there. We appreciate your visits and we hope to make your flight simming experiences just plain awesome smile emoticon If you haven't registered yet, go ahead and do so. All members are entitled to giveaways such as ASN, GSX and lots more products. Not just that, members are entitled to discounts to certain FSX/P3D/Xplane addons. The first one being this week. We hope to see you there. Thanks all! -FlightSim Central

Posting a few links to some of the initial reviews regarding the real plane, which was quite the technology beast when she came out in 2004. Not only the use of modern materials but also the one of the Diesel engines and single lever (+power percentage from the FADEC) setup while the G1000 of course is a milestone of its own. Other planes did come with such character traits but the combination of them all rendered the DA42 somehow special and maybe even risky from the investor's side. As a side note, the engines (actually, their manufacturer Thielert) later caused some trouble concerning the spare parts and warranty situation. So successors such as the 'NG' (for New Generation) not only added overall improvements but also switched the supplier to Austro Engine, still being the Diesel plus FADEC innovation already known but offering more power and efficiency. There also is a Lycoming option which would run normal Avgas (the Diesels go on jet fuel), add a few horsepower and come with a conventional rpm and mixture setup as opposed to the fancy FADEC single lever. Before the 'NG' model, the Thielert engines came as 1.7 litre and later 2.0 litre variants, the latter (named 125-02-99) being 'ours' in the Alabeo plane. "Unleashing" 135hp on each side. ^_^ FLIGHT TEST: Diamond Aircraft DA42 - Sparkling performer Flying Sports Sedan Check the dates, those are close to ten years old now. So that new stuff was really new. Since reading is a dry way to entertain one's mind, there's a video too. This one shows the latest and greatest, the 'VI' which followed the 'NG'. Comes with the 168hp Austro Diesels.
