i7920 users - A very promising solution to Stutters

Featured Replies

Tried various solutions to stutters over last few months, including fps limiterThis current solution is currently looking very goodIn summary if using i7920 or quad core, use only last two cores for FSX, no loss of display quality.Means you set affinitymask to 12, and set frames to unlimited in FSX.The result is the smoothest FSx ride i ever had, cause i use windowed mode with ASA on other monitor, the whole setup is so smooth, FSX frame dont even dip when i accesss task bar.I think the key thing is, the DISK and OS get cores 0 and 1 to themsleves and FSX seems to love thisGenerally during flight1 - Core 0 is widely about 3% to 45 % used , and more so 45% when am at x8 time accelration2 - Core 1 is widely about 3% to 45 % used , and more so 45% when am at x8 time accelration3 Core 2 Maxed constantly at 100% 4 = Core 3 Maxed constantly at 100% The Result in FSX is very impressive. My System------------------------------Vista64 SP2 [email protected] on is own raptor drive, and OS on seperate driveAddons-----------------------------------ASARC4REXTOOLS & Tweaks [i get frames about 15 to 70 fps]-------------------------------GameBoosterFsx.cfg Affinitymask = 12 - using only last two cores of i7920 (quite sure this is main reason its so smooth)FSX frame rate slider is set to UNLIMITEDTexture MAx Load = 80bufferpools = 400 000 000Not using FPS limiterI have i7920 hyperthreading turned off, if you prefer to use Hyper, then you use only last four cores for fsx and affinity mask is = 240I noticed that When using only 2 cores for fsx as opposed to four, vista resource maneger shows a lot more fsx disk activity than it did when fsx was allowed to use all four cores. The verdict is that using only last 2 cores for fsx, allows the OS and DISK to be able to supply FSX with a smooth rate of texture and scenary data. Hence the test flight with PMDG 747 for 5000 mile trip and x8 acceleration was the smoothest i have seen.FRame rate hardly dropped below 15%, before this my frame rates were dropping to 5/4/3, even with Fpslimiter. And you can cleary feel and see the stutter. In the new case the drop from 50fps to 15 fps is only noticed when you check the fps display.AGain Key INgredients 1 - Last two cores used by FSX, and if hyperthreading then its last four cores.2 - Maximum Prerendered frames is set to 8 in Nvidia Control Panel - Helps to make things smooth when frames are lower.3 - Set Unlimited Frames in FSX - Mine goes from about 15fps to 70fps, but with only half your cores in use by FSX its all smooth.

You should run ASA on a second computer over the network using SimConnect and let FSX use all the cores on your flight simulator computer.

Happy flying

Thanks for the feedback guys.Like i said before, i have always used all 4 cores on my [email protected], with very minor stutters. But recently the system has been stuttering predictable about every 5 minutes during flight. And i dont think its my ASA causing this, cause i tried with ASA off.So that on my system [email protected] - 6gig triple channel RAm - GTx 285 OC - Vista64.The only way i have found to deal with the stutters is to use affinity mask of 12= only last 2 cores are used by FSX.Nick mentioned affinity mas of 7 = 0111 = which means FSX is not allowed to use last core, i ll also give this a try. What i did notice however, since i turned of two cores for FSX, there is a lot more mainly fsx disk activity, and the flight is so much smoother. So as far as i am concerned, Its offical, FSX is so wierd, all these have different effects on different systems.BUt If anybody has any idea to use all my 4 cores without the stutters, i am open to ideas. My room is getting a bit cold without the heat from extra two cores. But they extra two cores do get used about 3% to 45% varies very widely, But not just FSX, but the whole of Windows is so much smoother, cause i got ASA window, Excel window etc open while running FSX in windowed mode.Runnig with affinity = 14 = 1110 = does reduce the stutters i get from running all four coresBut running affinity = 12 = 1100 = means FSX is very smooth on my system, and also when frames drop down low sometimes to say 9 or 8, you hardly notice it.Yes as expected i did try affinity mask = 8 = 1000 = using only last core for FSX, and texture loading during gane was so slow, when you change views you need to wait a while before the textures load, so THAT WAS A NO GO.Conclusion isI dont have a clue why my formarly smooth system running 4 cores suddenly started to stutter, but i suspect wondows updatesBut since i moved to using only last 2 cores for FSX, things are smoother or as smooth as they have ever been, without any noticable loss of graphic quality.Looking at Vista Resource Manager whilst trying all this, seems like using only last 2 cores for FSX and giving Vista 64 OS and Disk first 2 cores, incrreases the amount of disk activity i can see on resource maneger. And everything else is smoother for it.On my system its looking like, all for cores is too much for FSX, and startving the rest of the system. But when the resource is spread by using only 2 cores for FSX, everything including FSX is realy smooth. As for running ASA on seperate machine, i know it will improve performance without a doubt, but the number of things i have to setup before making a flight is so much already i dont want to add another PC into the picture. Cause quite often i start preping all things up for a flight and loose interest before even getting ATC clearance. So spreading activity into another PC is a Big Turn Off For Me.Infact i have tried my 4 core setup without ASA running and i was still getting the heavy stutters, so dont think ASA to blame for that. How ever looking at resource maneger, there seems to be a jump in disk activity just before i get the heavy stutters in FSX.So apart from going to affinity 12, i also made a note of the folders that were accessed most on my drives when FSX is runningD Drive This is my FSX and Addons Raptor driveD\FSX\Scenery is accessed the most read locarion during flightfolowed byD\FSX\simobjectsD\FSX\weatherD\RadarContactD\FspaxetcC Drive - This is my OS and Ystem DriveMost of the disk write during flight is done to this drive inC\Users\MyName\FSX etcSo i used Ultimate Defrag to place all these folders on the edge of thier respective HDD, this also helped.I used to just put the whole FSX folder on edge of disk, but when i checked Vista Resource Monitor while FSXing, and noticed that 85% of disk activity during FSX is READING FROM D\FSX\Scenery, i decided to place just that folder on outmost edge of disk with other folders following behind.

In the FSX.cfg add the following if it is not already there[JOBSCHEDULER]AffinityMask=3use these settings for N as you test and you must EXIT the sim and relaunch between changes255 - all 8 in use254 - 7 in use with the first remaining free252 - 6 in use with the first entire CORE remaining free127 - 7 in use with the last remaining free 63 - 6 in use with the last entire CORE remaining free 1 = 1 core 0001 3 = 2 cores 0011 7 = 3 cores 011112 = 2 cores last 110014 = 3 cores last 111015 = 4 cores 1111

I have already done some of this test in my previous efforts stated above, though not the complete set as youv detailed above. My [email protected] On all 4 cores i get heavy sttuters with when frames drop to say 5When fsx is on last two cores only affinitymask = [ 12 = 1100 ] , everything, FSx, and all the other Addon windows are also very smooth, e.g ASA Weather Window (Very Useful Weather Info, and great GUI).On last two cores only i still get my stutters and much less often does the fps down to 5, but the stutters are much much less noticeable. Like i said before, based on Vista Resource Monitor, Looks like smoohther performance is due to OS and DISK, getting first two cores to themselves. Maybe in near future, might change back to use 3 cores for FSX and even 4. But havent done this test on my system as is today, the smoothest is using 2 cores affinityMask = 12 = 1100Also using affinityMask = 14 = 1110 = is also smooth but not as much as [12:1100] But using affinity =15 = 1111 = is where the stutters are heavy, and the disk activity seems less also, generally spreaking on just two cores, the Disk section of Resource Monitor, suddenly lights Up more showing activity. Also noticed that 90% of disk activity is accessing FSX\Scenery folder, so i used ultimate defrag to place this folder on edge of FSX HDD. Results of this is much better than what i had before.

I tried this and lost the stability of my OC. My OC is FSX stable without this setting at I7-940 @ 3.7 Ghz however after setting the jobscheduler as you suggested it would not even load...Had high hopes now they are gone...

No more stutters here flying with fps unlimited and 30 fps set launching with FPS Limiter, i7920 4ghz and GTX280.

Then your OC is not stable. Have you Tested the stability with Prime95, orthos or Linx and MemeTest for about 12-24 hour?I currently run FSX with my new i7 920 D0 @4.6GHz. It was stable for 4 hours with prime95 but crashed after 2 minutes in FSX. After many hours of finetuning it is now stable in FSX too.

4.6 huh? And first post here. I'm not going to say you are a troll, but i can give you the advice to start saving money for your next i7. :(

There is no way setting a value in FSX.cfg affinitymask can cause instability on your PC.However i would advice you copy the line from another FSX.cfg and paste in your FSX.cfg then chnage the numbers on that.[JOBSCHEDULER] AffinityMask=12Problems such as you describe could be cuased if you mistyped the entry so cut paste what is above and try that.

If the instability is specific to FSX, I could well see that re-assigning cores could be a factor,if the OC is pushing the processor to (and possibly over) the limit..

I have no clue how you are getting 4.6 out of the 920 but as Alvega mentioned I sure hope you have a fund set back for a new chip. I hope you can continue to run at that speed but if the 920 lasts at that I will be shocked. Regards

Just came across this thread while searching for something else and wanted to drop in ...:)I have an i7920 @ 2.76Ghz and have no stutters at *all*. I didnt need to play with masks or anything. Just goes to show that when it comes to PC gaming how everyones system is so very different! My settings:FPS=40Autogen=DenseScenery=Very DenseAA=8X

What add-ons are you using?
