FS9 Flight planner

Featured Replies

Hi Guys, Dont know if this question has been asked before, or if it is even possible to do.Is it possible to add waypoints to the generic flight planner. Here in Australia,a lot of the old waypoints have been changed and new ones added, particularily for SID/STARS.As I am not very computer savvy, could an explanation be explained in more simple terms, (if there is one)Thanks,Neil

Unfortunately, with the generic version, it is not.

There are plenty of add-on flight planners that you can use..I'm sure there are some good freeware ones taht someone can suggest. I've used FSNavigator in the past and I believe that can be updated with new data.

Hello Neil, cyberbiker6 is quite incorrect. I update my FS9 database with pretty much every flight I make. I also update the approaches for FS9 ATCBe patient. I believe some new software will be available soon which will make it easy to write new approaches/waypoints for FS9.

Hey Ed, how are you currently updating your FS9 database with approaches and waypoints?Mark

:( Really!!! Oh wow, please Ed....how is this possible, i would really like to learn how

This is great news, I may be exagerating but that program which will facilitate adding waypoints and re-writing approaches will be a revolution in FS9. It seems many of us are waiting for this. It will be like a second Afcad 2.21! :(

It seems best to use an offline flight planner (I use the old FSBuild 1.4.3). FS9 will use the lat/long of the waypoints, even though they won't show on the map or GPS.Note that in FS9, there are two types of waypoints. Terminal waypoints are local to an airport and are used for building approaches. Route waypoints are used for airways, and are linked together to create the V and J routes. It is possible to add both waypoint types. Terminal waypoints are typically added using something like AFCAD, but there isn't any tool to date for route waypoints. they can be created using the sdk bglcomp tool though. The format is pretty simple, though it can be a bit time consuming. (It would be pretty easy to write a program to automate it if someone really wanted to. The hard part is getting the lat/long of the fixes).scott s..

Well, edetroit, you don't update the FS9 database with the generic FS9 software. You apparently do it with third party software or with a hack you haven't chosen to share with us.Accurate communication is important in piloting...

Hello cyberbiker, you may call me Ed....as I sign my name. I call you cyberbiker because it would appear you cannot sign your name. The amazing software I use to write a waypoint is called notepad. I will post an example of how to write a waypoint as soon as I get access to my FS computer.Scott is correct when he talks of types of waypoint .....basically normal (route) waypoints and terminal waypoints. Now while the original poster is probably most interested in terminal waypoints (SID's 'n STAR's). I can only give an example of a normal waypoint because terminal waypoints should written in the same fileas approaches (which also updates the FS ATC) ....is far more complicated and I am by no means an expert in this field.Anyway I have been using normal waypoints for years to update SID's, STAR's, route waypoints, terminal waypoints. For the flightplan this fine....if you want to write new approaches for FS ATC that is a different ballgame. Also as Scott said FSBuild will when converting a flightplan (with up-to-date navdata) for the FS Flightplanner will use the lat/long of the waypoints, even though they won't show on the map or GPS.This is the easiest option. I choose to write mine manually because then they are permanently in my FS9 database....will show up on the map and GPS...and will be there if I need them again. Finally as Scott said again. The hardest part is to find the lat/long of the fixes.I will post an example of how to write a waypoint in a few hours. It is quite simple.

I get it by flying to the location then opening Map view and coyping L&L. However, with that method, you have to take the time to fly there first rather then just planning it.

Good thinking..... a method I use also if I cannot find the L&L

Okidokie this is my next flight Palma de Mallorca (LEPA/PMI) to Lille (LFQQ/LIL) in a PMDG 738.I have downloaded the real weather and will be departing LEPA Rwy 24R GALAT 1A and arriving LFQQ RNAV Rwy 08.Both the SID and RNAV approach are in the PMDG database.However the waypoint BAKAX as part of the SID is not in the FS database (well it is actually it is called TOROS but needs to be renamed)The RNAV Rwy 08 does not exist at all in the FS database or in FS ATCI have written BAKAX as a new waypoint (which I will show now)(waypoint 1) and I have written the RNAV Rwy 08 approach for FS ATC and terminal waypoints. (which I am no expert at..so for the minute will wait until I know for sure what I am doing before leading others up the wrong track. Though I have had no problems so far)(waypoints 25-28) [flightplan]AppVersion=9.0.30612title=LEPA to LFQQdescription=LEPA, LFQQtype=IFRroutetype=0cruising_altitude=34000departure_id=LEPA, N39* 33.00', E2* 43.60', +000031.00departure_position=GATE 10destination_id=LFQQ, N50* 33.78', E3* 5.02', +000156.00departure_name=Palma De Mallorcadestination_name=Lesquinwaypoint.0=, LEPA, , LEPA, A, N39* 33.00', E2* 43.60', +000031.00, waypoint.1=LE, BAKAX, , BAKAX, I, N39* 27.30', E2* 31.80', +000000.00, waypoint.2=LE, ADX, , ADX, N, N39* 32.97', E2* 23.75', +000062.00, waypoint.3=LE, GALAT, , GALAT, I, N40* 9.26', E1* 56.45', +000000.00, waypoint.4=LE, BARUS, , BARUS, I, N41* 3.25', E1* 43.80', +000000.00, waypoint.5=LE, VNV, , VNV, N, N41* 12.64', E1* 42.35', +000045.00, waypoint.6=LE, ANTON, , ANTON, I, N41* 15.11', E1* 41.97', +000000.00, waypoint.7=LE, BISES, , BISES, I, N41* 18.48', E1* 41.45', +000000.00, waypoint.8=LE, SADUR, , SADUR, I, N41* 24.02', E1* 40.59', +000000.00, waypoint.9=LE, CAVES, , CAVES, I, N41* 27.82', E1* 39.99', +000000.00, waypoint.10=LE, OKABI, , OKABI, I, N42* 36.97', E1* 29.02', +000000.00, waypoint.11=LF, TOU, , TOU, V, N43* 40.85', E1* 18.59', +000571.00, waypoint.12=LF, FISTO, , FISTO, I, N44* 27.68', E1* 12.57', +000000.00, waypoint.13=LF, FOUCO, , FOUCO, I, N45* 45.28', E0* 28.83', +000000.00, waypoint.14=LF, ADABI, , ADABI, I, N46* 33.67', E0* 31.85', +000000.00, waypoint.15=LF, BOKNO, , BOKNO, I, N47* 2.82', E0* 41.50', +000000.00, waypoint.16=LF, DEVRO, , DEVRO, I, N47* 29.73', E0* 44.32', +000000.00, waypoint.17=LF, VANAD, , VANAD, I, N47* 50.23', E0* 54.43', +000000.00, waypoint.18=LF, VADOM, , VADOM, I, N48* 33.03', E1* 16.25', +000000.00, waypoint.19=LF, BAMES, , BAMES, I, N48* 58.52', E1* 29.17', +000000.00, waypoint.20=LF, KOPOR, , KOPOR, I, N49* 30.85', E2* 25.28', +000000.00, waypoint.21=LF, MTD, , MTD, V, N49* 33.16', E2* 29.37', +000396.00, waypoint.22=LF, NURMO, , NURMO, I, N49* 49.57', E2* 45.32', +000000.00, waypoint.23=LF, PERON, , PERON, I, N49* 54.75', E2* 50.40', +000000.00, waypoint.24=LF, CMB, , CMB, V, N50* 13.69', E3* 9.09', +000299.00, waypoint.25=LF, SUDAP, LFQQ, SUDAP, I, N50* 26.53', E2* 50.57', +000000.00, waypoint.26=LF, QQ406, LFQQ, QQ406, I, N50* 31.38', E2* 48.87', +000000.00, waypoint.27=LF, QQ408, LFQQ, QQ408, I, N50* 32.46', E2* 56.36', +000000.00, waypoint.28=LF, QQ410, LFQQ, QQ410, I, N50* 33.19', E3* 0.90', +000000.00, waypoint.29=, LFQQ, , LFQQ, A, N50* 33.78', E3* 5.02', +000156.00, Right....we need to write an XML file for BAKAX.here it is..................................................................................................................................................................................................................<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?><FSData version="9.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="bglcomp.xsd"><Waypoint waypointType="NAMED" waypointRegion="LE" waypointIdent="BAKAX" lat="N39 27.30000" lon="E002 31.80000" magvar="359.70"></Waypoint></FSData>......................................................................................................................................................................................................................That's it! simple eh? Now the waypoint region can be found in the flight plan....for eg waypoint.1=LE ....so write the fs flightplan first without the missing waypoint and then you will be able to see what the waypoint region should be.write in the waypoint ident...then the lat/longs.....then save....then drag the xml file over the bgl comp exe.It will then create a bgl file with your waypoint name. I then put this bgl in my Scenery/World/scenery folder.

That is all very interesting, Ed. Can you tell us a bit more? I've not seen a flightplan written out like that before. It looks like part of a .cfg file. Where does it reside in FS9? Can you refer me to an SDK for the writing conventions? What is the naming convention for the final .bgl? If you are using a brand new .bgl does it not conflict with default and other .bgl files?

Ah, very interesting...Thank you. I'm assuming that if you collect all of your waypoints into one large xml file, you would then have only one additional bgl. By the way, you did mention that there maybe some software on the horizon...any more clues you'd like to leave the group with :)Mark
