REX 2.0 and ASA ?

Featured Replies

Hi,I just got REX 2.0 AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!However, weather engine and weather avoidance seemed to give a big frame rate hit.I'm a AS customer. If I get the upgrade for ASA and use that for the weather and REX 2.0 for textures; will this work.REX is a little confusing interface if you go outside of there weather engine. I was planning on diabling all there weather engine and turbluence/up dirft effects etc. However, REX seems to require to install textures for EACH weather scenario based on the current weather. How do I effectively and efficently couple REX to ASA. I live in KPDX oregon on weather is sunny one day and overcast the next. How can I use ASA with REX? Do I run ASA first and get current weather? Then what texture from REX should I put in to get authentic weather that is coupled or accurate with ASA? I played around with the with FSX weather from sunny to T-storms with one texture install form REX and didn't seem realistic. T-storms were pretty wimpy and was based on real time sunny weather textures from REX. Not sure what to do?Please help.Thank YOUBillyBob :(

i too am still waiting for independent opinion on REX2 / ASA weatherCurrently i just install rex textures, then shut down REX, obviosly you need to have REX weather turned off in rex options if ASA weather is what you want to use.Start ASA and then FSXi think the weather texture thing where you get correct texture for weather only works if you plan on using REX weather. But i suppose you could also as you suggest open rex, install textures based on weather, shut down rex, start ASA , start FSX. then you will be using proper weather REX textures with ASA weather. The problem is, it takes so long to install rex textures its not a thing i would dream of doing every flight. Seems to take longer to install rex textures with the rex2.0, i suppose its cause its got mre stuff in it.I think i will have to make several flights with both ASA REX2 weather to see which i prefer, i am less particular about accurate weather more interested in eye candy weather. ASA does good eye candy weather.Maybe the weather pros will chip in soon let us know.

Thanks,But the real weather textures for REX are based on the weather engine that is disabled. How, could I install the right weather textures for ASA using REX? Is there just some way to install ALL available textures from REX into FSX, so they will ALL be available? Not sure how this would work? :( BillyBob

You do not have to run the REX weather engine to get the weather related textures. If you go into REX and click the "Weather" menu you can set your departing airport. Then click the "Wx Textures". This will load weather releated textures.Or you can go to the "Main" window and click the "I just want to fly now!" button and it will do the same thing. We know everyone has their preference. :)

I found that as well. Takes me nearly ten mins compared to about 4 on version 1. Thats also with my overclock from 3 .0 to 3.4ghz as of last week.Am using ASA on laptop until the REX weather engine can be run on network.Graham

OK. Thanks but for say a long distance cross-country IFR flight (e.g. KPDX to KJFK). If i put the route in the flight plan will it load the weather related textures for the route. Also, Do I have to do this for every specific flight? Say a multi-stop route, do I have to go into REX and load textures for every leg, and restart FSX each time? Then after loading REX textures, ASA will take it from there? Thanks,BillyBob

Bob,Please note that I am just offering information here and my affiliation with another product has nothing to do with my post.FS can have only one set of textures loaded at a time. This doesn't matter as to what product is being used at the time.If you wanted to do a multi stop flight with weather influenced textures for each segment, then yes you would need to shut down FSX each time and load new textures.Yes, with ASA running it would handle your weather. Thanks,

Bob - I use ASA for weather but I use REX, FEX *and* XGraphics for specific textures so yes , they can all work together with no problems. It really becomes a matter of personal preference. What *I* like to see and what *you* like to see might be two different things. But with ASA and REX ( and the others) you have a multitude of options at hand. Once you get the hang of it, switching textures and stuff is a piece of cake. They make a great combo.Vic

I noticed there is a flightplan page. If i put in a flight plan for say KSFO to KJFK. Will that load Wx related textures for that route? Thanks,BillyBob

No, it will load weather for that route. As said, you can only install one set of textures and FSX can only see one too! Note however that you don't really need new textures for every type of weather! I think you got a bit confused in that regard... When you load textures, those textures are used for all kinds of weather: storms, rain, snow, dry, little overcast, heavy overcast, dawn, day, night, everything will look great with new textures. It's not that you need a new texture set to go from bright white sunny day clouds to dark grey thunderstorm clouds! The weather engine will use the installed textures to show you all kinds of weather. EVERY texture set will be able to give you all possible weather! So why would you want to install other textures then...? Well, although every type of weather can be shown with any texture set, there are differences like the fluffiness of clouds, the overall brightness of them, the color of the sky at dusk or day or dawn, things like that. Every texture set has some sort of common look or feel, but it can portray any kind of weather nonetheless.I personally have one texture set installed (using FEX btw) that I like a lot (the kind of cumulus, the colors of the sky, etc.) and I've been flying with that set installed for a year or so. But that doesn't mean my FS-skies look the same all the time...!!! Far from it!

I recently installed REX 1.0 (now have 2.0) and ASA... both seem to work together just fine. If I'm looking for specific type of weather along my route (or real-time wx) I'll first use ASA and then start FSX. FSX will then use the textures from REX for my flight without requiring me to run REX.

Thank you guys! That makes it more clearer. I'll give it a try tonight.BillyBob

I still haven't heard the response to the subtle inquiry the original poster made. Does REX2 Weather INDEED have an effect on frames? If so, ASA would be my choice. I've been using REX and ASA for several months and it has worked well. I'm in a hiatus right now until my new computer is built. I should have it in about a week. But, I will NOT install ASA if REX2's weather engine is acceptable. Please comment on this.Stan

Hi Stan, REX has no adverse effect on frames on my machine, unless you count using the HD 4096 textures for the clouds, which will have a performance hit. If your machine is adversely affected by this, you can choose the lesser resolution versions of the clouds.

I haven't found a performance difference between the two as long as the cloud resolution is the same. However, I continue to prefer ASA as a weather engine, both for the direct smoothing features (REX seems to produce abrupt transitions) and for the way ASA handles the haze layer. ASA weather also seems somewhat more accurate for my local conditions. But others seem enthusiastic about REX - best move if you have both is probalby to install them and compare them head to head.Alan
