August 24, 200916 yr Unbelievable!---------I never had the DX10 preview option when having been running with my ATI 1950 Pro 256 MB card in my P4 3.4 GHz rig.So...never gave it much mind...but today thought for a laugh to try it.GEEZ.................!You get a MAJOR FPS kick-in-the-pants when in DX10 Preview! In unlimited (no FPS limiter (as it only hooks into DX9)...I am screaming around FSX at a mean average of around 65 FPS with lots of climbs to the high 70's!!! Also, I am seeing for the first time, WHITE CAPS upon the waves! Also, am really enjoying the shadows that move across the flying frame (airplane, ultralight, etc) in relation to the position of the sun. A huge, and large injection of realism. GOOD STUFF!My settings are all to the right in SCENERY except for TEXTURE RES at 1m (I like the look much better at this setting and it matches the full MESH res of 1m) and SCENERY COMPLEX at VERY DENSE and AUTO-GEN at DENSE (as I really like the true-to-life look at those settings. It has more to do with the look of the ground and objects rather than my system dictating that I only can use these settings. I rather didn't like the look of everything cranked to the right. It looked cartoonish and fake. With my mentioned settings, the ground looks very close to real.Edit: Oh..of course, I am running with UTX USA and CAN, with FXnhanced 1.08 to add to the 'Ground Candy' sense of realism.I don't think nHancer is in command when in the DX10 preview mode, but most CERTAINLY, you see a massive FPS boost and overall performance increase. Well, back to my DX10 flight, and man...FSX just keeps getting better, and better.....and er...better....and oh...did I mention...BETTER? NO?..Well.... (VERY LARGE....stupidly, LARGE smile on kisser....)Mitch, the i7-975/GTX285 type of guy.... :)
August 24, 200916 yr Yup, this is my experience also. Likely you'll see even more of a difference than I do with your heavier i7 (see my specs).I would be even happer if those asphalt taxiways hadn't caused all that flickering but I feel DX10 preview is so much better in all other aspects (FPS, bloom, graphical quality in general) it's still worth it./Jonas ----------------------------------------------------- i7 920 @ 3.6 GHz; 6Gb DDR3; Windows 7 Ultimate x64; Sim disk=300Gb 10,000rpm (VelociRaptor); OS disk=300Gb 7,200rpm Radeon HD 4870 X2; Audigy 2 ZS; Dual monitors=24" Dell Widescreen (TFT) & 19" BenQ (TFT) FSX Acceleration

You're using BLOOM? Maybe I should tap that little buddy and see what it does for visuals. :)Edit: Ok, I just came back from enabling BLOOM and besides sucking around 10 FPS away...what does it actually add to the visuals? I am now over Detroit and heading out for the coastline. Does BLOOM come into play when you are out and over water, or looking into the sun? What is the effect?Edit 2: Ok...Bloom is outtahere! Other than sucking 10 or more FPS, I don't see it much paying its way in the over-all scheme of things (visuals...) Clicking it off...and brining back on line the 10 or more FPS. Back to the flight...:)Mitch
August 24, 200916 yr Bloom causes light to be diffused into the space around it, whether it is reflected light or direct light. The effect is a matter of opinion, as when the reflection off a vertical stabilizer causes a flash, runway lights look a little soft and hazy, or the lights in your virtual cockpit have rays like you're seeing them through smudged glasses. All in all, it softens the world up a bit when it comes to lights. It causes a huge frame rate hit. The definition of optimism is Captain Sim touting their bloom effects (which they do, despite their high graphics standards which already drag down your FPS).So most people don't use it. I'll use it if I feel like it, or want a certain effect for screen shots, or otherwise don't care about the guaranteed frame rate loss. If I had a computer that could handle it without a problem, I would probably use it more.

It took ten or more frames right off the top...and as far as I was concerned, didn't pay its way. I won't ever use it in the future. I'm certainly enjoying all that the DX10 Preview brings to the plate, and most likely will keep it as the DEFAULT setup. It adds buckets of general performance, and all for free. I guess you just need a card that enables it. :)Cheers!
August 24, 200916 yr Author Run...do not walk...run to the store to get a card that gives you the DX10 Preview option, or enable it if you have not already done so.I'm in a flight right now, using Victoria + (great, great add on!), in the ultra light, and in descending towards a few islands in the channel at about a viewpoint of 50 degrees to the horizon...am popping 114 to 139 flipping FPS in UNLIMITED. Don't even talk about stutter-free and smooth simulation and animation. It's like I died and went to heaven. Folks...GET ONE OF THESE CARDS, (nVIdia GTX285) and click on DX10.Edit: I'm running VISTA Ultimate 64 bit with SP 2. I just read a post that said you can only use this feature with either VISTA or W7. Sadly, XP users are out of luck.FSX is now simply beyond belief. Beyond belief...Mitch
August 24, 200916 yr and before everyone begins to post this question:why are all my addon aircraft white?not all aircraft addons are DX10preview enabled. if your aircraft become white you must turn off DX10preview.-- D. August 24, 200916 yr It's not so much the video card as it is the CPU to get high frame rates in FSX. While a 8800GT does handle DX10 chores, you're also going to need CPU horespower to back that up -- a CPU alone won't handle DX10, of course! Jeff ShylukSenior Staff ReviewerAVSIM
August 24, 200916 yr Mitch," the i7-975/GTX285 type of guy.... :) ", your enthousiasm is so refreshing!!Thanks mate, it's (almost) a pleasure to moderate this forum now and (obviously) a joy to read your posts!!! :--))I am also using Dx10 for years now and couldn't go back to Dx9 despite the runways flickering and other small glitches.AA is better rendered with Dx9 + nHancer though but with a large monitor with high resolution AA is ok with Dx10.Smoother, nicer experience!I also love the cockpit shadows and the waves moving wiith strong wind. - PC Hardware: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D // Asus ROG Crosshair X870E HERO // 2x32Gb Corsair Dominator Titanium DDR5 6000MT/s CL30 // ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 4090 OC Edition // 4Tb Corsair NVMe M.2 MP600 // Corsair 1600W PSU Samsung Odyssey Arc 55" curved 165 Hz monitor. - Simulator Hardware: VIRPIL Constellation Alpha Prime + VIRPIL VPC Universal Control Panel - #3 + MOZA AY210 Force Feedback Yoke + WINWING URSA MINOR 32 Throttle & PAC Metal + WINWING SKYWALKER Metal Rudder Pedals + WINWING Airbus FCU & EFIS + WINWING Boeing 3N PAP + WINWING MCDU-32 + WINWING PFP-4 + WINWING PFP 3-N + WINWING PFP-7.
August 24, 200916 yr Author Please, please tell me how you managed this performance increase! I have an 8800GT (which actually supports DX10), but my FPS drops from 35-40 to around 18-20. I don't think this decrease in FPS justifies the graphics quality of DX10, so I'm sticking with DX9, unless you guys tell me how I can achieve such a performance increase as you have! :(I didn't do anything OTHER than just enable DX10 Preview...and then watched my FPS double or more. I have been flying around Victoria + scenery between 90-114 FPS, through the mountains, whatever. I am presently just sitting on a lake in those mountains, and enjoying the reflections of those gorgeous peaks in the water as I eat supper! That's all I did. Just enabled it. The first thing I noticed was the massive FPS climb. All this in Full Screen.Mitch

August 24, 200916 yr This is the problem with DX10, a lot of add-ons just won't work. For example, I like Fly Tampa's St. Maarten scenery. First time I tried it out under DX10 (first time I tried DX10, since it was my favorite scenery, and naturally, I wanted to see how it looked) there was a pink wall at the end of the runway! Okay, there is a patch for that. But the airport textures don't work at night, still.I guess I'm intrigued enough to continue to experiment with DX10 preview, and maybe I'll put together a list of myself of what works and what doesn't. Enthusiasm is contagious. And refreshing :( And it makes David happy. Hope he enjoys it while his buzz lasts. EDIT: Oh, dear. I had just clicked to read this thread after contributing this, and found that David's bug had migrated to my sig. Except then it scurried up toward the top of my post... hmmm... wish all bugs were as easy to get rid of as squashing them.
