DX 10 Preview---Unbelievable!~

Featured Replies

What seems to be nice about DX 10 and the newer video cards is that there seems to be no great FPS hit with bloom. Like in DX 9 . Also does AI use a lot of cpu cycles when I kick off UT2 I can get huge FPS jumps with DX 10 anyway great find Mitch, it even helps us guys who don't have the monster machines like yours. This may now be some new insite into the Video cards coming into play with FSX . Maybe somebody can fix the runway problem also. :( I been having fun with FSX today and low speed flying after your post.

Unbelievable!---------I never had the DX10 preview option when having been running with my ATI 1950 Pro 256 MB card in my P4 3.4 GHz rig.So...never gave it much mind...but today thought for a laugh to try it.GEEZ.................!You get a MAJOR FPS kick-in-the-pants when in DX10 Preview! In unlimited (no FPS limiter (as it only hooks into DX9)...I am screaming around FSX at a mean average of around 65 FPS with lots of climbs to the high 70's!!! Also, I am seeing for the first time, WHITE CAPS upon the waves! Also, am really enjoying the shadows that move across the flying frame (airplane, ultralight, etc) in relation to the position of the sun. A huge, and large injection of realism. GOOD STUFF!My settings are all to the right in SCENERY except for TEXTURE RES at 1m (I like the look much better at this setting and it matches the full MESH res of 1m) and SCENERY COMPLEX at VERY DENSE and AUTO-GEN at DENSE (as I really like the true-to-life look at those settings. It has more to do with the look of the ground and objects rather than my system dictating that I only can use these settings. I rather didn't like the look of everything cranked to the right. It looked cartoonish and fake. With my mentioned settings, the ground looks very close to real.Edit: Oh..of course, I am running with UTX USA and CAN, with FXnhanced 1.08 to add to the 'Ground Candy' sense of realism.I don't think nHancer is in command when in the DX10 preview mode, but most CERTAINLY, you see a massive FPS boost and overall performance increase. Well, back to my DX10 flight, and man...FSX just keeps getting better, and better.....and er...better....and oh...did I mention...BETTER? NO?..Well.... (VERY LARGE....stupidly, LARGE smile on kisser....)Mitch, the i7-975/GTX285 type of guy.... :)
That is definitaly not a DX10 card. The pixel and vertex shaders are 3.0 and not DX10 4.0SM. I don't see how you got the option...

To get AA to work in DX10, you must check the box in setup. DX9 needs it un-checked.DX10 is smooth and higher fps, but my favorite MAAM R-4D-6 has white skin so I use DX9. They plan to issue a FSX plane update so I will switch then.DaveNew System 1:Same as 2 except: I7 975 3.3Ghz @ 3.7GhzNew System 2:Intel Core I7 920 Quadcore OC @ 3.6GhzAsus P6T DLX V2 X58 1366, BD Combo Plextor B310SA6GB (3x2GB) Corsair Dominator DDR3 1866C7GTHIS ATI 4890 1GB, Samsung 24", Saitek X-52Logitech Z680 5.1 Speakers, G15 Keyboard, G5 MouseThermaltake Element S Case, Corsair 850TX PSUC: Intel 80GB SSD w/Vista Home 64D: WD 300GB Velocity Raptor w/FSX, F4AFE: WD 1TB Caviar Black w/DataOld System:Dell XPS 720 H2CIntel Quad Core Extreme QX6800 2.93 @ 3.73GHz4GB (2x2GB) Corsair Dominator EPP 8500C5D FSB 800MHz @ 1066MHz2x160GB WD SATA Raptors, Sound Blaster X-FiNvidia 2x8800GTX 768MB SLI, Dell 2407WFP PanelXP driver: 169.21, Vista driver: 169.25Logitech Z680 5.1 Speakers, G5 Mouse, Saitek X52WinXP Media Edition SP3 on C: (SATA 0) w/ Internet/AV/Office/FS9/Falcon4 AFVista SP1 on D: (SATA 1) (Dual Boot) w/FSX3DMark06: 17,018/6992/7123/5667

Take it you don't use ASA then?Graham

Well, I have a nice system and a 28" lcd, but the lack of AA is still very apparent. Glad you like it though. I think part of your extended fps is the lack AA being introduced. My frames go way up without any AA added.Bob
oh....you get AA! When using nHancer, I had it not checked within the sim. But, as soon as I checked AA within the sim, jaggies went right away. Oh yes, you have AA with using DX10...but you have to have it enabled within the sim by checking 'on' the box tab.Absolutely!Mitch

Thanks for this enthousiastic post, made me immediately change my settings :) Now i don't have a performance boost, but with shadows and bloom on it's no decrease either. Just enough fps on a Duocore6850, ATI3870 system. I like the cockpit shading a lot, but like to improve it a little. Is there a way to increase the contrast, between the lit and the shadow area's? And how to reduce the jaggies?
To dish up some AA, turn on (enable) the AA box within the sim. That worked for me. You might want to turn BLOOM off...and pick up about 10 more FPS in general. Add on's and converted FS9 aircraft have no textures on their airframe. The FSX aircraft all appear normal when using DX10 Preview. At least on my rig. Can't help you with the contrast. Somebody else might step in... :)Mitch

Other than a number, there's no difference between a smooth, stutter free 30fps and 130fps. Meaning, if FPS is all you get, why bother?
OH...I can get 30 any time of day or night. As for whipping around at 114 FPS....there sure IS a difference in the sim, controls, force effect...you name it...I experienced it. I'll take the over 100 option ANY DAY now..... :)Mitch

Mitch, what exactly are your computer specs? You've got me so dam surprised!!
As follows:Dell XPS 730x H2C:i7-975 CPU overclocked to 27bin x 133.7 for a running 3.609 GHz6 Gigs of Tri-Channel Crucial 1066 MHz RAM overclocked to 2:10 x 133.7 for a running at 1337.0 MHz at 7-7-7-20-1T timings (Memory has no heat sinks, but are naked).1 nVidia GTX285 (1GB) not overclocked.1 XFi-Titanium (Creative) Sound Card...other stuff not associated with flight sim'ming

----------------------------------------------------I've used AS 6.5, in FS9, but will be going to ASA soon. For now, I have been using FSX's weather as I have found it to give me some pretty nice skies...not too shabby. Mitch

HelloI guess you are not using TrackIr then ?
Never used it, no... not to date.

My main problem with DX10 is that it gives me microstutters or hickups: random very short pauses which really ruins it all. Apart from that, I use and love the ENB-addon (which gives amongs others a great bloom effect without an fps penalty) and the Limiter: both are not compatible with DX10. Also, with DX10 I can't use nHancer's Combined x8 FSAA, which is vastly superior to the ingame FSAA. All these things make DX10 rather useless for me... And I even didn't mention shimmering airport textures and no progressive taxi...A higher fps is nice, but not when things look a lot worse...

DX10 gets much smoother higher fps on my i7920 gtx285 system as well. But am not switching till progressive taxi works in DX10 or i find a similarly easyway to navigate airport, reading airport signs is not my thing, too much hassle, especially in big aIRPORTS.Without taxi issue, i ll go dx10.i can liver with the dx10 blinking textures, but not the progressive taxi.By the way i have also tried the new 190.38 driver from nvidia, and it seems ok on my system. With this driver and most drivers after the famous 182.50, seems the cpu struggles less to give top fps, smoother. BUt all the other drivers after 182.50 jerked like crazy on my system until 190.38.Maybe by someone mentioned 190.38 driver shows the progressive taxi in dx10 breifly then it dissapears, so maybe by driver 200.10 progressive taxi will work in dx10, or some clever person makes non fps hitting progressive taxi that works in dx10.There is the Radar Contact assist that gives heading information to guide you in taxi, but its not the same as progressive taxi.Think ill investigate using the rc4 taxi heading assist with dx10 see if i can get used to no progressive taxi

I used to think the same until i discovered Followme:http://secure.simmarket.com/disposition-followme.phtmlIt's brilliant, works wherever progressive taxi works.Btw, progressive taxi works in top-down view with DX10 ebabled.-T
