DX 10 Preview---Unbelievable!~

Featured Replies

Anybody with an ATI card should try both DX 10 and Bloom. :( Also One great thing is for anybody that has UT2 if the FPS drop to much you can kill your AI traffic on the fly. I wish we had something that could do that with FSX ground traffic.

Mitch," the i7-975/GTX285 type of guy.... :) ", your enthousiasm is so refreshing!!Thanks mate, it's (almost) a pleasure to moderate this forum now and (obviously) a joy to read your posts!!! :--))I am also using Dx10 for years now and couldn't go back to Dx9 despite the runways flickering and other small glitches.AA is better rendered with Dx9 + nHancer though but with a large monitor with high resolution AA is ok with Dx10.Smoother, nicer experience!I also love the cockpit shadows and the waves moving wiith strong wind.---------------------------------------------------------------I guess my posting motivation is from just the sheer pleasure FSX is giving me. I know that I am preaching to the choir here, when I say that your CPU/GPU 'horsepower' is absolutely imperative to have in place, and is most critical to bring out what I am personally enjoying right now. I don't even think that the Dev's saw the simulated world I am most fortunate to be able to enjoy. In going through the fjords, lakes, what-have-you in the Vancouver area...at 114 FPS at times...gives the sensation that you are floating upon the wind...floating upon the ocean breeze as you start your descent. To say it in another way, with DX10 now giving me such massive FPS horsepower, it can't get any better than this, Dave. I don't imagine how?!?!? I am literally floating down, with even the most minute current in the wind GENTLY affecting the airframe. No coarse airframe movements or jerks any longer. I have seen the Light. FPS IS EVERYTHING! EVERYTHING to bring to you that sense of flying. The sensation of flight...... It is EVERYTHING. It is floating upon the wind, DaveEdit: Dave, I have done many touch-and-go's, and haven't noticed any runway flickering. Not yet, anyway. I am running 182.5.I soon will switch to Dawn, Dusk, and Night to see what other goodies DX10 slips in.Continue enjoying your DX10/FSX smorgasbord! :)Mitch

Before the i7 I had a dual core o/[email protected] and a 8800GTX and I also had almost double fps with Dx10.Mistery of computing science...EDIT: make sure you run FSX and your desktop at the SAME resolution!
------------------------------------------------------------------------I am also runing FSX as per my desktop resolution of: 1920x1200x32. If this adds to the boost, then it does on my setup.Mitch

Well, I have a nice system and a 28" lcd, but the lack of AA is still very apparent. Glad you like it though. I think part of your extended fps is the lack AA being introduced. My frames go way up without any AA added.Bob

Thanks for this enthousiastic post, made me immediately change my settings :) Now i don't have a performance boost, but with shadows and bloom on it's no decrease either. Just enough fps on a Duocore6850, ATI3870 system. I like the cockpit shading a lot, but like to improve it a little. Is there a way to increase the contrast, between the lit and the shadow area's? And how to reduce the jaggies?Gerritcockpitshade.jpg

-------------------------------------I just came back to make a small edit..and read your post. You're using BLOOM? Maybe I should tap that little buddy and see what it does for visuals. :)Edit: Ok, I just came back from enabling BLOOM and besides sucking around 10 FPS away...what does it actually add to the visuals? I am now over Detroit and heading out for the coastline. Does BLOOM come into play when you are out and over water, or looking into the sun? What is the effect?Edit 2: Ok...Bloom is outtahere! Other than sucking 10 or more FPS, I don't see it much paying its way in the over-all scheme of things (visuals...) Clicking it off...and brining back on line the 10 or more FPS. Back to the flight...:)Mitch
A matter of opinion, no doubt, but my point was mainly that bloom looks alot better in DX10. In DX9 it looks strange at best and the FPS drop is twice what you'll see in DX10.In DX10 I love the way the sun comes through the clouds when bloom is on. It makes the skyscape look both realistic and wonderful. Bloom has its downsides of course. The FPS drop I can live with (my i7 gives me enough and your's should give even more I imagine, can't see much difference between 50 and 70 fps anyway) but the effect is sometimes exaggerated when it comes to the specular effect on surfaces. Sometimes the instruments "glow" in the dark on a level where you can't read them anymore. That's an annoying drawback that's drawing away realism rather than adding to it./Jonas

Scoob,Include the majority of the AI packages in your list of DX10 no/go.
Just Flight TrafficX, MyTrafficX (vast majorty of models) and UTX 2 (vast majority of models and perhaps all after SP1) are all compatible with DX10 preview. Sadly WOAI is not.
Run...do not walk...run to the store to get a card that gives you the DX10 Preview option, or enable it if you have not already done so.I'm in a flight right now, using Victoria + (great, great add on!), in the ultra light, and in descending towards a few islands in the channel at about a viewpoint of 50 degrees to the horizon...am popping 114 to 139 flipping FPS in UNLIMITED. Don't even talk about stutter-free and smooth simulation and animation. It's like I died and went to heaven. Folks...GET ONE OF THESE CARDS, (nVIdia GTX285) and click on DX10.Edit: I'm running VISTA Ultimate 64 bit with SP 2. I just read a post that said you can only use this feature with either VISTA or W7. Sadly, XP users are out of luck.FSX is now simply beyond belief. Beyond belief...Mitch
HelloI guess you are not using TrackIr then ?

Fly using DX10 preview at night. Not so great, as most runway lights will not apaer at most airports. I use DX10 during the day and DX9 at night for this reason. I sdo like DX10 except for the shimering Runway intersections ( a real bummer), but the FPS bump, makes up for it somewhat.Rob

And how to reduce the jaggies?
I don't think you can, I remember seeing a lot of shots just like that with VC shadows. I think it depends on how the developer modeled the interior.

Windows 7 seems to handle bloom and the DS 10 preview much better in general. Did you know that Windows 7 ships with DX11 not that it help FSX much.jja

Other than a number, there's no difference between a smooth, stutter free 30fps and 130fps. Meaning, if FPS is all you get, why bother?

DX10 brings in some nice features like the virtual cockpit shadows which really add to the emersion for me. Also as someone else mentioned, the bloom effect is not as overdone as it is with DX9. Therfore, its worth it for me to enable it once I start a flight during the day. and shut it off at night.Rob

Mitch, what exactly are your computer specs? You've got me so dam surprised!!
