August 25, 200916 yr Unbelievable!---------I never had the DX10 preview option when having been running with my ATI 1950 Pro 256 MB card in my P4 3.4 GHz rig.So...never gave it much mind...but today thought for a laugh to try it.GEEZ.................!You get a MAJOR FPS kick-in-the-pants when in DX10 Preview! In unlimited (no FPS limiter (as it only hooks into DX9)...I am screaming around FSX at a mean average of around 65 FPS with lots of climbs to the high 70's!!! Also, I am seeing for the first time, WHITE CAPS upon the waves! Also, am really enjoying the shadows that move across the flying frame (airplane, ultralight, etc) in relation to the position of the sun. A huge, and large injection of realism. GOOD STUFF!My settings are all to the right in SCENERY except for TEXTURE RES at 1m (I like the look much better at this setting and it matches the full MESH res of 1m) and SCENERY COMPLEX at VERY DENSE and AUTO-GEN at DENSE (as I really like the true-to-life look at those settings. It has more to do with the look of the ground and objects rather than my system dictating that I only can use these settings. I rather didn't like the look of everything cranked to the right. It looked cartoonish and fake. With my mentioned settings, the ground looks very close to real.Edit: Oh..of course, I am running with UTX USA and CAN, with FXnhanced 1.08 to add to the 'Ground Candy' sense of realism.I don't think nHancer is in command when in the DX10 preview mode, but most CERTAINLY, you see a massive FPS boost and overall performance increase. Well, back to my DX10 flight, and man...FSX just keeps getting better, and better.....and er...better....and oh...did I mention...BETTER? NO?..Well.... (VERY LARGE....stupidly, LARGE smile on kisser....)Mitch, the i7-975/GTX285 type of guy.... :)After reading your post I have also tried enabling DX10 preview. What I see is a lot of different graphical glitches. For example problems with AA and shimmering textures and incorrectly textures or objects popping out and in. Is this normal for DX10 preview? See the pics. First two picsan object (A fence) at KSEA popping in and out depending on which directio I look. Third Taxiway textures crossing the runway at KEWR.Images over the 200K file size limit deleted
August 25, 200916 yr Graphics glitches are a well-known problem. It does seem to improve my frame rates (70, much less 100 or higher is only a dream at this point) and the water looks much better. For some light aircraft flying in some places, it looks like a good deal. I haven't tested it with heavies yet. Taxiing 30 minutes at EHAM with flickering taxiways might be more than I am willing to tolerate. Antialiasing is nowhere near as good as DX9 with Nhancer, which is also an issue with flying big stuff, since the focus is more on the airplane itself than the sea foam.

First two picsan object (A fence) at KSEA popping in and out depending on which directio I look. Third Taxiway textures crossing the runway at KEWR.I have found a few runways that have the runway texture (a couple of square textures that flicker, etc) and of course add on planes that have no outside textures, but the FSX ones sure do. Believe me though, this is not a show stopper for me. I am running around FSX WELL in the 100's in FPS. This morning, I took a flight between Phoenix and Los Angeles, and was shaking my head as I was reaching heights of OVER 195 FPS. I also at this FPS readout, had NO stutters, in banks, straight flight, etc. Just eye-popping FPS performance. I stated the aforementioned, as some users get stutters when having gone to unlimited and watched those FPS spikes go up and down. I'm talking here about CONSTANT over 100's that do not dip to 20, then 80, and then back to over the 100's. That is NOT what I am typing about. :)I locked it down to 30 FPS and it stayed there like a ROCK....no matter what major center I took off from or flew out of. JFK, KLAX, KLAS, KMIA, KDTW, all of them....it never once took a dip to 29.x or lower. It's really TOO bad that they never matured DX10 for FSX. If they would have....history would have been rewritten. EVERYBODY would have had the absolutely best FPS performance their individual system could pump out, no matter what that top-end limit was.Using DX10 Preview mode on an i7-975/GTX285 system...BLOWS THE TOP OFF FPS throughput, never mind the GREAT wind-driven, white-cap, wave action over water bodies and the ocean. Lake water now at FULL WATER effect...is well.....so beautiful and REAL looking...that I am at a loss for words...and everybody KNOWS that is unusual, lol)DX10 PREVIEW is a SUPREME 'Keeper' for me...and I'll put up with the odd artifact, and will fly what aircraft has outside textures, etc. I mean....WTH! The performance is beyond the descriptive!Mitch
August 25, 200916 yr Moderator With the performance you claim I would like to see what FPS you get going into JFk with a sky full of clouds and AI at 90% to 100%.You aren't making these claims with any complex aircraft are you, like a PMDG 747 or LDS 767, or using any AI packages like UT2?I would be interested to see how the system stands up to some heavy metal in complex areas with lots of AI, weather, etc. Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
August 25, 200916 yr Dx10 runs noticeably slower for me. Aerosoft's Manhattan addon flashes all kinds of pink and green colors in dx10 mode as well as hitching even worse than it usually does. I also don't get the benefit of the ENB bloom addon in dx10 either. Dx10 is a no go for me.
August 25, 200916 yr Author I'm flying through the Grand Canyon in DX10 Preview Mode, and....took a pause to type:If SOMEBODY could write a patch that TOTALLY ENABLED DX10 for FSX, with all, or most 'bugs' 'glitches' coded out.......they would become millionaires overnight.Let's see....$75.00 a pop..... x's the WORLD! Here folks, we offer you the: SP3-DX10/FSX update.So...what flight sim'ming professional programmer wants to step up to the plate, or..er...yoke?OK...back to the Grand Canyon, and then onto Las Vegas to gamble away some earnings...lol. I do need to keep that $75.00 held back though...just in case....ROTFLMBO!

I have flown this with the FSX inherent suite of planes. Not a PMDG or LDS after market. Detroit (KDTW) is pretty complex when you have UTX cranked in, and FSXnhanced. In DX10 Preview at unlimited, I go from 100 plus FPS down to (if you can really call it 'down') to 56-66 FPS, in using FSX's 737 fleet. That's what I fly with anyways. If I lock down to 30 FPS...then it stays there. I have done more VFR since having bought my i7-rig than I think I have EVER HAVE with either FS9 or FSX. It's now a joy to view, FSX is.... I now realise that I have YEARS of coastlines and islands to explore. Next..is my Caribbean Island Hopping in the Beaver! :) I am having a ball!Mitch
August 25, 200916 yr Oh, I'm sorry I thought you were using an ATI X1950. Whoops :( See You In The Skies...gman!"Impossible things are simply those which so far have never been done." - Elbert Hubbard

For a while I though I was really missing out on something, but I tried my computer with those setting minus DX10 since I am on WinXp and I get about the same results. That's kind of what I figured since we are running at similar clock speeds. Thanks for confirming and saving me the money to go out and buy an i975. Guess I will stick with my E8400 for now.You should go ahead and crank up the clouds to 100 miles or more. It looks a little better in the distance, especially when you are at high altitudes and it won't effect your peformance much. Even with my older rig I keep mine at 100 miles and it doesn't make a performance difference. I guess going from the rig you had to the one you now have explains your enthusiasm., lol. I though you were seeing something that we weren't, but I guess it's about the same.Regards Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
August 26, 200916 yr DX 10 for me, and I don't have white planes everywhere......Free demo to try at http://www.flightsimtools.com/adconvx/My WOIA aircraft put me off DX10 for a long time.Happy Chappie now also with i7 975/GTX285.CheersTrevor Trevor Golding
August 26, 200916 yr I guess it all (also) depends on what you are used to. Yesterday I gave DX10 another try, but after being used to nHancer's Combined x8 FSAA, the default FSAA from FSX really looks crappy... No way I am going back to default FSAA. And as I also said, I can't use the ENB-addon, which really brings life to FSX. Still, it's a pity MS/Aces didn't do what they promised us...
