PMDG B747 vs MD-11 - which is overally better?

Featured Replies

I'd like to buy one very detailed airliner for FSX and I think some PMDG product would be a good choice. However they made two such planes for FSX and reading their website descriptions I guess both are quite similar as for realism level. So I have a basic question to their present virtual pilots: Which is better to learn and to fly in your opinion?

Both are very good. I have both and I like the MD-11 better because it runs much smoother on my pc. I want to like the 747 but the frames are just to low with it. My pc is a q6600, 4gigs ram, vista 32, and 8800gt if that helps.

My rig is very similar. It is C2D 2.2 GHz, 4 GB of RAM, 9600GT 512 MB video card and Vista 32-bit. So it seems MD-11 is more FPS friendly plane. I guess my rig can handle MD-11 smoothly enough. However do you have any FPS heavy add-ons installed?

That's a loaded question. They are both great aircraft. However if you already have some experience with Boeing heavies, the you may wish to experience the MD-11 because its quite different from the Boeing's and a new learning experience. I happen to really enjoy them both.

I must add my JS41 runs without FPS hit aside of very very bad weather flights. I suppose MD-11 should have similar resource requirements. Am I right? In fact I have no heavy jets experience so far. I flew mostly GA planes in FS9 and now I upgraded it to FSX version due to better graphics and new SDK features. As I know detailed models of heavy airliners in FSX are dominated by US designs made by PMDG, LD and CS. Airbus jets are mostly not well developed here.

If I could be assured of 20 fps with reasonable compromises on my system, the Queen of the Skies would be hard to pass up. It was one of my favorites in FS9, but the reports of bad frame rates have scared me off for FSX. They probably shouldn't, since I like Captain Sim, not exactly lightweights in the FPS department and I am the guy who seldom listens to negative forum buzz because of the bandwagon effect. When I am flying a big airplane, she is the star of the show and just about everything else is optional. And she's the biggest of the Seven Sisters.I have the MD-11, studied it, and for whatever reason just didn't warm up to it. Nothing wrong with it. Guess I just like big Boeings. Think they would let me trade? :( So put me in the minority report, I guess. But if you like MD-11's that is one mighty fine add-on.meh, maybe I'll have to try it out again if she ever gets a new party dress.

Well, FS9 experience is completely different story...

Tim,I can assure you that the PMDG 747 for FSX is comparable if not easier on frames than the Captain Sim products..........get out your credit card!! :( Regards,Bob

Yes, I have heard opinions that CS Pro-line products are not graphically well optimized. At least their 757...

$79 is in the "wait for later" category for me, rather than the "impulse buy" category by about $25, especially on an older model. But I'm sure your right about frame rates and I will probably end up with it since no one else seems to be developing a new 747.

You get what you pay for. I would highly suggest that you take a close look at the MD-11. The 747 is very good as well but keep in mind that the MD-11 has their latest development goodies in it from an art and FPS perspective. Pushback, refuel, arming the doors are all done from the FMC.

Both are very good "to learn and to fly" as you say.The Md-11 gives substantially better framerates in FSX.Guy

Such a tough call, but I'd say the MD-11 due to it's progressed design refinements and superb audio soundset experience. I just remember the first time I touched down in the MD-11 and rolled out - I just thought "wow...."
