Ben,Perhaps a few screenshots would help us compare. Try starting, and at the point where the rpm refuses to rise further, pause and get us some screenshots of your engine gauges, your pedestal, and overhead panel. It still sounds an awful lot like your props aren't on the start latches, so at risk of covering something you've already done, try the following:with the engines shut down, pull into full reverse (F2), then operate the prop unfeather switch (on pedestal) for each engine. When the props stop changing pitch (out the window) put the power lever into ground idle (F1).At least that will guarantee they're on the latches (sometimes they look like they are, but will feather once they start turning over).Otherwise, it could be a fuel issue. Do you have fuel pressure in the green (above engine gauge) for each engine before you start?

Ben, are you in the states? Near Los Angeles. I would be happy to give ya a hand on the phone if your interested...I could walk you through the procedure and then we can get to the bottom of this and get the 41 started for ya..If you wanna give it a try, pm me I will send ya my number or visa versa...JB

I think the only way for us to approach this systematically is for you to take a few screenshots of the aircraft outside just prior to engine start, the overhead panel, the central console and so on, Ben.That way, we could quickly determine what the apparent issue is...From your description, it sounds like you are trying to start the aircraft without having the propeller start locks in place, so the engine never picks up...And continuous depression of the engine start button is not necessary. With the start locks in place, the condition levers in taxi (middle position), the power levers at idle, the standby fuel pumps on, you turn the START MASTER to LEFT GND and press the left engine start button once...It has been mentioned before, but please excuse me and allow me to go through the procedure of unfeathering the propellers for ground start.Move both power levers into full reverse, either using the F2 key or with the mouse...Once in reverse, operate the unfeather switch in the direction of the left engine first. Wait until the propeller fully unfeathers into the reverse blade angle. Once the propeller has stopped moving, you can repeat for the right hand propeller. Once that has also stopped moving, advance the power levers to idle (F1 will do the trick). The start locks will now be engaged. You may now switch on both standby pumps, switch off the left and right avionics masters, select LEFT GND with the start master and push the left engine start. As the engine picks up and stabilizes (at 72%rpm if the conditon levers are at taxi), engage the generator for the left engine and begin the start procedure for the right engine... Once both engines are running and stabilized, you may turn on the right generator, turn off the standby fuel pumps, and switch on the left and right avionics masters...OK, a couple of things may have been left out, but this should get the Garretts running with no issues...Andrew

Hi Ben and everyoneWhat seems to have helped me was to ensure the 'BATT ASSIST / GND PWR ON' Rocker switch is on?Not sure if this is the correct procedure but you will notice when to start engines you will hear a 'throatier' sound...Hope this helps but I am still a novice on this aircraft! There are many steps to starting the engines and I always make sure the props are unfeathered by using the external view and using the unfeather switch just behind the throttles. You can see the props change angles. It seems thay won't start when they are feathered.-Michael

Ben, as promised I've just posted a startup guide here. Hope this helps.
Hi "puffmac",After a good night sleep, today i decided to uninstall FSX and install the sim and the JS41 from scratch again (i did uninstall the JS41 yesterday, but not FSX)Then i read your startup guide, good work and nice lay-out !My conclusion was that your work around was kind of the same as mine.Only thing i did not do was move the unfeature switch also to the right.....because i allway's start left first and i didn't think about moving the unfeatureswitch to the right at that time. But that wasn't the issue......unfortunately no start after walking through your guide. So i wanted to take a start uninstalling FSX and try a fresh install before i quit FSX and the JS41 for good. Before that, i decide to first buy another FSX aircraft (the Super MD80 Pro) installed that one and see what this aircraft is doing. This product has an aircraft configuration manager, here you can press a button for loading the aircraft with for example running engines and completely configurated for take-off.So i did...started the MD80, pressed the config manager.....and what do you think? ......that engines just wouldn't start too !!Now i was sure it must be FSX giving me troubles. Then i decided to do another trick....in FS2004 when i load the PMDG B744, the aircraft is commonly loaded without the VC.So i alway's have to load that saved situation twice in order to have my B744 VC right. Also the MD80 in FS2004 was not alway's configurated well in the first load, so i have to load the situation twice to get a good aircraft. So i thought, let's start FSX in the Trike (a default aircraft...as i alway's do) and then load the JS41 totorial, when it is loaded i will load it once again.maybe the JS41 has a same kind of problem as the B744 and the MD80 in FS2004?When i did load the JS41 tutorial a second time, suddenly a running engine sound appeared while the situation was loading. When the situation was loaded completely....the running engine sound disappeared....as the engine was stopped normally.During this, the engine parameters where not showing any activity.....it was only the sound of one engine. This never happened before ........but the good news is that after that i am able to start the JS41 !!I could not believe it.....i quited FSX and shut down the PC, started all over again....first load the tutorial flight once...i expected the JS41 not to start and i had to load the situation a second time.....but it did...It seems something in FSX or the JS41 was stuck and loading twice the turorial situation solved that.Now....when loading the situation a second time, the running engine sound does not apear anymore...it was just once, but good enough the get the problem fixed. After this, I was testing for more then three hours just to be sure....starting over and over again, stopped the sim, started new, trying a saved situation with the JS41,saved a before startup situation at another airport....Shut down running engines and start them up again....it just starts everywhere....and every time....everything works.....no need to load the situation twice anymore...it just works fine now. There is only one thing i would like to mention.Starting the tutorial flight....my JS41 props are alway's unfeathered....they NEVER are feathured !So i must thank you Puffmac, because i tried your startup manual i was indeed again looking further one more time and tried to load the Tutorial situation twice.Problem solved!Main thing to learn? Maybe there are more people out there with a stuck situation....try starting FSX in the Trike (default aircraft)Load the tutorial flight and load it again .....that solved it for me.Thanks to all for their idea's hints and tips.

Hi James,Thanks for your help, but as you can see...my problem is solved. Thanks again,Ben

Hello JB,I am in the Netherlands, we could do this via Teamspeak....but not neede anymore as you can see. Thanks anyway !regards,Ben

Hi Russ,Novice or not.....anything could help...one button wrong and there might be a problem. When that was it...one is very happy with the novice :-)Thanks anyway!regards,Ben

Hi Michael,Thanks to you to!As i wrote....my props are alway's unfeatured when i load the tutorial. But thanks agin trying to help out.Regards,Ben

Ben,Well I'm really glad you got it working as that's the main thing, however the problem itself is really rather strange! But no worries, at least you can now fly the brilliant aircraft you paid for!Cheers,Andy.

Glad you got it going. I can't imagine how frustrating it was, but that is all behind ya now... Happy simming...JB

Hi Andy,Maybe i got the engines broken when starting them in a early fase last week (unless the fact that failiures are "off") and it got stuck from there.(I was able to start the engines once just after i purchased the JS41 last week)Loading the situation twice directly behind each other got that fixed? In FS2004 it happens often that a situation (or a PMDG saved panel file) got not loaded right once and i have to load it again right away, to solve it.Maybe in the coming day's i am stuck again and i have to solve it in the same way......i don't know. The testing of today did not reproduce the situation again that's for sureregards,Ben

Hi guy's,I have reproduced the problem !After that i shut down my PC this afternoon, i started FSX up again this evening.Again.......the JS41 would't start....I shut down FSX, fired it up again and loaded the Saved JS41 flight twice behind each other. The second time there was a "Clack" sound (just like the sound when the starterswitch is coming back after starting a engine) and directly followedby the sound of a running engine (like mentioned in my previous post). No engine parameters where activ and the sound of the running engine stopped as where the engine was shut down.after that i was able to start the JS41 !So this is defenitly the problem.....Sometimes when starting up FSX and or a JS41 saved flight, there is something preventing me for starting the engines.Starting FSX up again and loading twice the same JS41 saved flight after each other, gives the "Clacking sound and the running and shutting down engine sound"whereafter starting the engines is possible again.regards,Ben

Hi! I have the same issue. :( Ben, can You change livery after reloading aircfaft?Piotr DabrowskiWindows 7 64bit

There is a "Startup Guide" on the previous page. Read it slowly and do each step EXACTLY as described and I think your JS41 will start fine. I struggled for 8 hours with the manual (and it's in there but it's OH so large) and also the "First Look" video. and could NOT get the procedure down. I now have no trouble starting and making a successful flight thanks to this guide. Now you still have to complete the checklist, but at least it's started, running and no smoke or fires ......

Starting the aircraft is not a problem, when I reload twice tutorial flight (as described above). But I can't change livery. When I do that, aircraft is unstartable. Generator won't start.Piotr DabrowskiPs. Sorry for my bad english.

Dear "Gritz",Maybe you must read this topic again.......it is not the wrong procedure that is preventing the JS41 from startup.....it is something in the code. Some have to load the situation file twice in order to "reset"the aicraft so it can be started. The startup manual on the previous page is very good, but that is NOT the case here.regards,Ben

Hi Piotr,You English is just fine.I am sorry you have the same problem, i cannot try what you ask me now because i have deleted FSX and the JS41 from my system.I am planning a fresh install because of these problems, because when i load the JS41 twice....sometimes i have a FSX crash and i will have to start FSX again. My FS2004 holds 18Gb of data and works without any problem......so i want FSX and its addons behave the same.regards,BenRegards,Ben
