Finally an OVERCAST sky from above!

12 must not be out of the range for this value as I have it at 12 too and it never changes each time FS is closed.Thanks.
HiIt's out of range each time you go in display settings inside fs and make your choises, then close it, then it store's it to max, 8, when you do it manually in cfg file, no changes to that value when you start and stop fs.Stein-Ove

Thanks Mark,I am using Vista and I can't find that CFG file anywhere. I tried C:\Users\myaccountname\etc etc but no sign of anything like that. Should I start FS9 first?ThanksGerry

Hi Jim/Guys,The value defaults back to 8, but only if you access the display settings menu within FS9.This also effects some other values (can't remember what they are off the to of my head). The moral of the story is, always back up your FS9.cfg.Whenever you go to change something WITHIN FS (ie using the Display settings menu) be aware that it will overwrite other settings back to default. It has made a huge difference to my cloud coverage (unless of course it is all in my imagination :( ).Neil

From the Weather section of your FS9.cfg file: CLOUD_COVERAGE_DENSITY=8 > CLOUD_COVERAGE_DENSITY=12.Apparently. :( Neil, what is your maximum visiblity in AS? And cloud draw distance in FS9?
Hi Mike,I normally set the ASA upper and lower limits to different values in the ASA options menu to simulate some variety (ASA always defaults a vis of 9999 to the maximum you specify on your sliders. This is unrealistic, as from experience putting out METARs all day long at work, mostly the surface vis rarely goes above 25km, in fact in London where I work it rarely goes above 15km). I normally have the surface vis somewhere around 10 SM and the upper at 59 SM. Unless I am flying on a lovely clear (dry) day, in which case I might boost them to near max.I have also changed the cloud draw distance to 12, and that gives you lovely clouds all the way up to the horizon.
Great tip. thanks for sharing. BTW what cloud texture is that? looks nice.
I have just invested in REX. They are very fine cloud textures. Just be sure you also get Real Sky ProX as well, as the REX sky textures are a little on the loud side (and very unrealistic unless you live in the desert!).I have to say that I also use sometimes the free HD cloud textures available (can't remember their name) and at times I have a feeling that they are even better.Neil

Thanks Todd.Just changed it and while I cannot get the same as the photo in this thread it does look a lot better. I am using Flight Environment and it seems to work well with a small impact on framerates.Gerry

I can get an overcast sky just by using a weather engine like FSMetar. It is much more realistic. It's free as are the clouds and the haze layer!!!!! (in other words it is not necessary to fiddle with the .cfg file unless you are using FS9's weather engine). The attached pics are generated by this METAR for Genova Italy:- LIMJ 071550Z 06007KT 3000 -RA BR FEW006 BKN012 OVC070 12/10 Q1015Vololiberista

That maybe but once you get your settings the way you want them - change them in the .CFG file instead of going through the display settings as it resets a few other things as well as this one.Paul.

Yup, I've been running mine at '18' for the past year which is also not out of range. That gives a properly thick blanket, just how I like it.

Wait! If 12 is out of range, then 18 is way out of range!OK, I just checked my file. If you have Cloud coverage set to maximum in FS, then the resulting value is 8. So that means that 12 and 18 are out of range.Whether or not the values are saved from session to session is for you guys to see. I just remember that when some high res textures were released awhile back a value needed to be changed in the cfg outside of the normal range and it needed to be changed and mabe it was just what another slider was changed in FS.Thanks,

How much does this affect your frame rates?

vololiberista,FSMetar looks simple and excellent. What cloud textures are those? Thanks for the pics, going to give it a try :)

I'm almost 100% sure it's not out of range. The value stays locked after a restart. It seems some values can go higher than the max slider setting. An example would be the terrainmaxvertex settting which can be edited to 21 for 19m mesh. I'll do few screen compares in a minute.

Thanks for the tip about FSMetar.I just downloaded FSMetar154, and it works great. :( When FSMetar generates clouds, and haze it is using the textures one has installed?Probably a dumb question but I was wondering.

Yes, whatever textures you have installed already, is what FSMetar uses. After a bit of research it seems Vololiberista is using the HD Environment clouds. FSMetar coupled with a registered version of FSUIPC works excellent!

I changed mine to 12 in the CFG file and after exiting FS9, I checked the value and it reverted back to 8. I'm using XP Home Version. So I don't know how others are achieving a permanent change. I even SAVED the file after changing it to 12.Jim D.
