Pacific Northwest Demo Out now

Featured Replies

One item to note regarding the demo, for those like myself who fly with SP 1 vs. SP 2 -- the demo works beautifully under SP 1. It's pretty rare to still see SP 1 support these days so Kudos to OrbX for releasing an addon which runs under SP 1.-John

whatever geofa. clearly it says seattle is in the red. i looked for ksea outside that red zone and saw nothing which led me to believe that the seattle i saw in the red zone included the city and the airport. i have no idea what a kmz file is or how to open one so i relied on the pdf map which shows seattle in the red. you sir are rude and instead of disciplining the people that ganged on me you discipline me for saying the manual is lousy. nice modding. ill be back at flightsim.com. i am embarrased for the record but only for your conduct. you can do whatever you wish to my account as its clear you have no interest in modding the ones who deserve it. thanks for the list holger as that was exactly what i was looking for. doubtful i will be buying it now after this experience.

Some people are SO ungrateful. As for the demo, congrats to John and the FTX team.

I'm a Australian, but I know enough about US geography to understand that Seattle is not in the Olympic Peninsula.
After the May 18th, 1980 eruption of Mt St Helens one of the 3 major U.S. TV news networks had a map with Seattle on the Olympic Peninsula.I think the problem with that map is the Sound is not very well defined, so I can see how somebody who doesn't know the area getting confused by that. No reason for that guy to get that upset however.

First impression: Good job, guys! I loaded up this demo this evening and had errors but it turned out that I had renamed my default.xml file to default.xml.bak long ago as a tweak (one that didn't help much) so it was no biggie. I flew around a bit in the Piper Cub and I have to say it's quite an improvement. I took before and after shots at three different airports. The changes are remarkable. I would never have noticed that towns didn't exist where FSX puts them. I did not have time to explore the areas highlighted in another thread but will do so as soon as I can. I like the look of the green-ness so far - nice textures representing grassy fields. Hey, I'm from New Mexico so any green is beautiful to me, ya know? As to the arguments in this thread, I so wanted to join in and tell the guy to just let it go, but I figured it was best handled by the mods. It's unbelievable that some people go off like that and keep harping on it. For what? There is plenty of time to see screenies of Seattle and there is enough towns that are included in the demo to get the idea. He was a troll just begging for a fight, that's it. I'm glad he went home to flightsim.com, they like that sort of stuff. AVSIM is great in that people are helpful without sarcasm and I hope it stays that way. Serious chat for serious simmers. That means a lot to a newbie dumbsquat like myself (I've only been simming for 20 years). Thanks for the demo. I will buy when financial situation allows it. Dolph98

So far my two strongest impressions of the demo are autogen and texture resolution.I never fly with the default autogen (actually most of my flights are with Tileproxy). I never felt the default Autogen looked real. The PNW autogen does, it's very impressive. Homes line up wonderfully on cul-de-sacs, trees flow to the horizon, and at night streetlights float above the neighborhoods.I've never flown FSX with the textures set for their highest resolution, mostly because I never noticed a difference between 1M and high res settings. With this demo, the difference is very pronounced. There's nothing like it in our hobby.Last, item, fps are amazing. Usually 30 unless I pan too aggressively. Always at 30 if I follow the guidelines in the demo manual (Normal to Dense autogen). However I can't resist flying with Autogen maxed. As I noted in an earlier post, the demo alone could be a payware release and would satisfy all the but the most demanding simmer. Flying the Cessna 172, there's hours of flying to enjoy over a very beautiful part of Washington state.-John

Thanks for the mini-review John! I'm impressed you feel that the demo could have been a payware release :)I guess our thinking was that by giving you guys a big enough slice of PNW for free, it might convince you to save some pennies and enjoy the other 145,000 square miles, most of which looks very different to the Olympic Peninsula.

Cheers,

O yes, the autogen...! I've never seen better than in PNW. Those trees look stunning and they do flow indeed!!! I fly with autogen at Extremele dense (no matter what the manual says :( ) and still get a rocksteady 25 fps (my max) above everything but the largest cities. I just can't believe my eyes... I am in FS-heaven, really! I don't know how or why my computer sudddenly got the spirit, but I won't change any setting or driver or whatever on my computer for quite some time (I even disabled updates because I don't want anything to change my computer!)! I am very happy that I found the sweetest spot for my rig just now PNW is released! :( Trees used to cause the biggest drop in performance up to a few weeks ago, while I just LOVE trees... and just now the best FSX-trees ever are there, I can fly above them with a Extremely dense setting. Sorry if I keep repeating myself, but I am just too happy. :(

Nice to see the thread back on track. The demo is glorious. As a long-time resident of western Washington, I'd say it definitely hits the mark. It's the best simulation of flying over this region that I've ever seen. I started a flight from Port Angeles and was amazed at the quality of the autogen and the look of the trees flowing up into the mountains. The water color is also fantastic. Spot on.There's fantastic value in the demo, and even more value in the full product. It's a huge region, in which every square mile has been giving some attention. Every airport has been tweaked to fit the adjusted landscape and incorporate some custom buildings. Amazing.I really think Orbx is leading the charge right now in terms of the future of FSX. They are FS11.Also keep in mind the vast user community. The OZx guys are already working on the first of what will probably be a slew of fantastic little air strips. The demo is impressive enough that I am definitely being driven to a computer upgrade. As lovely as the demo looks with moderate settings, I really want to see it with that autogen slider pushed to the right without the chug-chug of my current system. I'll be in the market for an upgrade later this year, and I'm sure I'll be buying PNW in the meanwhile just to reward these guys for the great value and for giving us extended life in an old sim.Kind of a a really excited user post, but .... (shrug).

I downloaded and installed this demo. Thanks for making it. I took off from Port Angeles (CLM), the autogen looks beautiful and so does the mesh/features but I'm getting a MASSIVE fps hit. I run autogen at dense and I lost about 10 fps, (locked at 30) and now get huge stutters (20-30% variance using the FPS display) with lots of blurries. I will be passing on the product. It does look gorgeous though.

Well, I downloaded the demo and I must admit I'm a bit disappointed. I couldn't find Heathrow, Templehoff, John F Kennedy or even LAX. When I did finally find some remote little strip I couldn't get my C5A Galaxy off in the runway distance. When I did find some piddling little GA plane to fly around in I noticed that the mixture of grasses in the fields is wrong, not to mentioned the ratio of elms to poplars in some of the low lying areas. And don't get me started on the water! I pushed my finger up against the river on the monitor and all I felt was dry glass, not a hint of moisture anywhere. And another thing. Why should I have to pull back on the control column to take off, or move it to the side to bank? I thought the demo would do that for me. And I need to move my hat switch to look around, why doesn't your program do that for me? To say that I am really disappointed is an understatement, I think I'll take my toys and go home and you can all suffer.Signed Another obnoxious poster

If that was in response to my very tactful post I think there is, in fact, no need for your post.

Don't worry Ryan, that was just bait. Your post was perfectly reasonable and tactful. Don't feed the 1-post decoy account, hehe! There's something in the water today; our forums were hacked this morning as well. <sigh> One of those days I guess ...

Ok, so I just need a new PC right lol? After some testing I am getting the large fps hit but I went to autogen normal per the manual and it helped much. Still getting blurries and I'm really not sure why. The FPS are keeping up to my target value (I dropped to 25) using the framerate limiter .bat tool but even at slow speeds (Piper cub and Arrow speeds) I get blurries, and the textures never load all the way. I wonder if its the mesh on my machine. 10m is a bit more to calculate than the default, whats it 38m default? It could be a product I would enjoy - I already found some totally awesome things in the demo! Your mountain textures are incredible. But I pretty much have to be paused to see them :( I'll keep fiddling, we'll see what happens.
