Running FSX on a huge TV

Featured Replies

I have set my PC to display on my TV using a HDMI cable. I can play other ganmes such as Football Manager 2010 and I can browse the web.The problem is that when I load Flight Simulator X (Gold Edition) the game displays on the pc screen. The sound for the game can come out of the tv, but not the display. Also, when i minimize the game, it displays the pc desktop back on the TV! Any help please, Thanks, Zack

OK, today I returned my old Samsung LED TV and bought a Samsung 3D LED TV instead and just did a short flight and boy it was cool !! The 3D effect isn't as big as when watching real 3D content like Avatar 3D at the cinema but it sure is there. When sitting in the cockpit it's almost like you would like to reach out and grab the yoke and what I found VERY cool is that for the first time the terrain in FSX looks real in a way where you can actually see and feel uphills and downhills (not sure how good English that is but I hope you understand what I mean) compared to the usual very flat feeling with no slopes or how I should put it...hard to describe but VERY cool indeed! And last but not least, I'm able to experience all this without any loss of performance nor quality in FSX since nothing changed with my PC when it comes to drivers, settings etc...all is processed in real-time by the TV and my PC nor FSX don't even know about it :(
Hello Webmaximus and all!First time post here.im just curious about this Samsung 3D LED TV,do you still need to set VSYNC on with this TV@200hz?does anyone know about this?(please)because i really want to buy this tv for fsx.thxKind regards

very, very, interesting discussion, I'm running 3 HP 22" over TH2GO 5040x1050, it's nice, but I do not like the monitor bezels sticking in the middle, and the fact that all things are over starched, so my though are toward replacing all the 3 with 1 HDTV 40" / 47". cheers !Yair

hello Yairdid you purchase a TV to replace your TH2GO, even i had a TH2GO setup and after a while i got fed up with the bezel in the way, i now use a DELL 27" inch for outside view and 3 19" for the 2D cockpit and other 2D items, i too plan to use a large LCD TV for my outside view in the future.

I just set up my LG 50" 1920x1080 plasma exclusively for my FSX machine a week ago. It's fantastic. Some adjustments on TV are necessary to get the best picture quality (1:1 pixel mapping, no sharpening, right settings for brightness and contrast, etc), but once it's done the results are stunning, I used to fly with my Dell 30" 2560x1600 monitor, but this 1920x1080 50" screen is miles better, no comparison. The less resolution is a price to pay, but it's really ok, especially with help of manual zoom on HOTAS and TrackIR. In addition, regular computer LCD monitors are so cheap now and I only need figure out how to place one or two for panel display etc under the plasma. I recently completely upgraded my FSX gear with i5-2500 o/c to 4.93GHz, with Intel SSD drive, Thrustmaste Warthog HOTAS, CH Pro pedal, TrackIR 5, plus some rudimentary homemade flight chair. I'm absolutely in heaven in that corner of our unfinished messy basement. The hardest part is to get wife to agree for the $700 LG plasma from Costco, everything else I just sneaked in and mixed with the old parts and told wife the prices which were half or less what I actually bought for.... :-)

I use a 42 JG 50 that I bought on Craig;s list.................Love the size, but hate the picture!!..........this is a good TV I would guess, but not when you view the screen from 30", the print is fuzzy and not clear or dark......one problem is the native res is 1350 x 768, but I set it at 1680 x 1950, but would like to set at 1920 x 1080............I have calle dthe techs at LG and Samsung, and they suggest a set with 120 HZ, 1080p, LED, aand couple of other itedms I can't remember, ..............but would like to get some "expert" opinions on WHAT IS THE BEST, CLEAREST,CRISP PICTURE, I can get form using a large screen TV??..........this one is driving me nuts with the fuzzies...............OH YEA, IN ANOTHER LOCATION, i HAVE A wESTINGHOUSE 37 or 40" monitor I bought 4/5 years ago, and the picture on that is many, many, times clearer than this one..............also, Sansung suggested a commercial display model 400FP-3but that is over a thousand, too much!!, but does anyone have any comments on this type of picture??............will be waiting to get some comments so I can go shopping..............soon!!..............B42L8

any 120hz Samsung LED TV....well worth it!

I have been using a 37 or 42 in TV for quite some time, and it is a great add'n to the sim, but the TV had a native resolution of 1368 x 768 (something like that), so it was not a clear and bright running on the 1960 x 1080 I use for FSX, so I got a 40 Westinghouse 1080p, 120Hz, LED...................this is sharper, brighter, and better color, but my computer tech friend said I should be using a plasma screen for the best results............so off to Costco to get one on sale, 50" 1080p, and return the Westy...............never had anything this big, so will be a treat, or a bust, ..............will give results later today, if anyone is looking to do the same large screen idea.........B42L8

B42L8 interesting to see your results ;-)

How close are you going to sit to that 50" TV?If you are about 6 feet away I guess 1080p would be ok, but any closer and it will be a pixel fest. There is a reason good desktop monitors @ 30 inch use a resolution of 2560 x 1600!

Tried a 32" LG 1920x1080, but I didn´t like the "pixel fest" as you say!I´m myopic, so I needed to be close up, too close for comfort...Nerd.gif

LOL!Thats the thing with these big tv's. If you have to sit x feet away from the screen to avoid the pixelation, why not just get something smaller with better resolution?I would rather spend ~$1000 on a 30 inch monitor (Currently you can get the HP ZR30w for $1004) at 2560 x 1600 resolution and actually be able to sit a foot away from the screen. The immersion factor then goes way up IMHO.Hence why I will be buying said monitor shortly......

2560x1600 will be an awesome feast, not pixel fest!$1004?I got 3 LG 2360 23" LED´s for $550 for my Eyefinity set-up, it works, yes, but 1980x1200 would be better...Enjoy your HP ZR30w.

Well, I did it, got this beast on the desk, was a job just getting the packing box down the stairs..............am now sitting about 30" from the screen, and it fills the eyes from side to side...........did a test flight in the Caranado B58 out of Darrington in heavy clouds, all slders max, ......this has got to be about as real as it can get, the plasma is terrific, better than the LCD-LED 40" 1080p I tried last week.............I have special 30" focal eye glasses so that really helps with the sharpness...........I have the Nvidea 480 card and maybe the later one would even be better, am not that techy yet..............I don't think I have figured out how to set all the various settings as the print is still fuzzy and not as sharp as I would like, but considering that it is really to be viewed at 20 ft, this is quite a feast...............when using FSX, the picture is a blast!!.................it is no secret that Costco has a plicy of taking back the TV within 90 days, so if there is the energy to repack this, I might try a 46" 3D samsung which was about the same money...........there are so many inprovements that come out each month, it is hard to know where to stop?????????............so far, this is a "must have", if it fits on your desk.................B42L8

A few months ago I upgraded to a 30 inch Dell U3011 IPS monitor at 2560 x 1600. Image quality of a high-resolution SHD monitor, when running at the fairly close viewing distances of a typical PC monitor, is vastly superior to a large TV running at standard HD resolution.Absolutely worth the $1300 price tag, IMHO. IPS display technology produces super-bright colors and brilliant contrast, dark blacks, and it's really quite something in the sharpness department.Just beware, though, a monitor running 2560x1600 requires nearly double the video bandwidth compared to a 1920x1080 display. To paraphrase the words of the immortal Sheriff Brody..."You're going to need a bigger boat" (CPU+GPU).
