The Hawaiian Islands - Kauai Photoscenery

Featured Replies

Skipping the ooh's and wows', although they apply, this is an excellent photoscenery.Thte source photo data is very good quality and high resolution. Guess something around 1/2 meter/pixel or better. There are no variations of color so often found on photo stuff. Consistent coloring is essential. The coastline is another usual problem. Excellent work here with waves shown and no annoying demarcation between the old FSX water and the photo source. Usually this is a big problem.I was prepared for the usual 1m/pixel poorly colored photoscenery which anyone can make for themselves very easily using Google, Bing or Yahoo lo-quality photoscenery. If you want some Autogen the Annotator (included with FSX) will allow you to place it on top of the photos. Tedious but possible. :(

Nudata,Thanks so much for the kind words about the scenery. The source imagery was, unfortunately, something of a horror show but it's amazing what can be accomplished with Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro. As with most things, it takes time and patience...often both in great quantities. And a lot of research into how the end result should look. I've lost track of how many area photos I studied.Maui, once it's done, will have autogen--how much remains to be seen. As with Kauai, I'd rather not make this my life's work...unless, of course, someone was willing to pay me enough doing it to make a living... :)McCrash,Were you able to download it?Rich

Rich,Did I read you all right that you plan to work on Maui??? Are you aware that Newport Scenery has a cheap payware Maui available already including night textures and AUTOGEN? It would be such a terrible waste on your talent to do double work unless of course your sole purpose is just to do it for your own pleasure. Why don't you work on Lana'i or the Big Island instead - both of which have not been done yet. The Big island I know is terribly large compared the rest however Lana'i is a nice accomplishable piece of work.I beg you to reconsider. Thanks,Alex

Just like to add my thanks to those above. This is spectacular scenery, at least as good as the MegasceneryX payware. Congratulations on a magnificent acheivement!Cheers,Noel.

Just want to bump this to let people know that The Hawaiian Islands - Kauai is now available here at AvSim, too. I just got through uploading it. It's split into five sections due to this site's 100MB restriction on files. Instructions on recombining the files and installing are included with the scenery.Enjoy.Rich
Just to let you know that we increased our file limit from 100MB to 250MB a couple of months ago. You still would have had to split your work (421MB), but possibly into less parts. Many Thanks for your great Hawaii scenery and uploading it to the AVSIM Library. Good luck with the rest of the project.

Alex,I'm aware of the Newport Scenery. I haven't purchased it myself to check it out but, judging from their screens, they didn't edit the clouds or cloud shadows from the ground textures and I'm not wild about the overall coloration I see. This whole enterprise has been sort of an adventure for me. So I will probably proceed as planned. Thanks for the heads up, though. I appreciate it.Momtchil,I noticed that but not until after I had broken up the files and started to upload. Your upload page directions still read that the limit is 100MB. It's not until you start uploading that you see a little blurb alongside that mentions 250. You might want to revise the upload page instructions what currently exists.Rich

Sorry - We've asked for someone to update that.

Hi Rich,I too have not found the key to making Lockonfiles.com work for me after several tries so I will wait for the AVSIM versions. Do you have a link available for the component pieces on AVSIM as well as the other island you referred to? I went looking in the library and found nothing. The pictures are wonderful! Good work!Stephen

Here's Niihau: Niihau at AVSIM.Kauai is also available through SimViation as a single download. But for Kauai here at AVSIM as a 5-part download: Kauai at AVSIM.Use them in good health. :( Rich

Rich,Thank you for all your work. I took a spin around and was delighted. This is the first time I enjoyed a photoreal add-on. Very good.Stephen

Stephen,That's high praise. Thank you. I'm trying to produce scenery that will keep me with my nose (figuratively) pressed to the window saying: "Oh, wow!, Oh wow!" I'm glad you're enjoying it, too.Rich

It does look really good from what I've flown so far. I think the water was water-masked in pretty well. The only quibble I would have is that Waimea Canyon looks a little washed-out (too yellow). I was wondering about waterfall effects. I see a couple versions of Victoria Falls in the library, I wonder how hard it is to create a realistic falls as seen in Hawaii?I also vote for Lana'i, though certainly not the sort of "wow" factor of the terrain that Maui has. PHNY is what I use for my default flight so I guess I'm biased there.scott s..

Rich,Nice work. This has been an incredible surprise and I am awaiting the FSDreamTeam addition of PHLI too.Keith
