Progressive taxi

Featured Replies

I read someplace about "progressive taxi," which draws a line on the pavement that you follow to guide you to the runway or gate or where ever you have been cleared to. Is this a feature of FSX or some third party software? If FSX, how do you enable it? I checked the help section in FSX and they don't mention it. Is this something you have to ask the tower or ground control for? In real life you tell the ground controller you are unfamiliar with the airport and they will give you a helping hand. I've done it many times.Bob P

No problem, just open the FSX ATC window when on the ground and if ATC has given you an assignment, "enable progressive taxi" will be one point to choose. If FSX is running in DX10, you might have difficulties to see a line, especially when running fullscreen.

Guess you missed this in the FSX Learning Center:quote:Progressive TaxiIn the real world, pilots often fly into or out of unfamiliar airports. It can be confusing to determine how to get from parking to the runway or vice versa. In this situation, the pilot can request progressive taxi instructions from the ground controller. You can do this in Flight Simulator at most towered airports as well. When you tune (or autotune) ground control, one of the ATC menu items is "Request Progressive Taxi." Select this item, and a line is drawn on the taxiway from your present location to the runway or parking space. The line is drawn directly from your position to the runway or parking space, so you may have to look around the aircraft to see where it starts. Top down view is helpful for seeing the progressive taxi line.To see your aircraft in top-down view

Personally I prefer to use the DBS GPS system to find my way around in an airport. This piece of software is not very expensive and is easy to use.Have a look at DBS site.

I checked it out at the web site. Only question, can you ensure that the route show on the map is the same as the ground control instructions?

No. It has its own "logic". If you use default ATC, stick with progressive taxi instructions and save your money for something else.:(

Correct, the default ATC uses its own "logic" - But if you prefer realism, check out DBS Follow Me Car feature. I use Radar Contact 4 as ATC.

I hear ya .. just thought that real pilots had airport diagrams to help with taxi instructions/directions. The program would simulate having those diagrams :-)

They do, check airnav.com for US airports

No. I don't think so. I use Radar Contact. this program doesn't give a parking space.

For completeness: Radar Contact 4, whilst an excellent ATC addon, won't do any ground-based directions. Taxi to the Gate is about the strength of it. There is hope on the horizon in that respect with RC5 "when it's done".

PFE does guide you to and from the runway! However wouldn't it be nice if the sims adopted the system in use at London Heathrow. When the a/c are ready to taxi or have just landed they are given the instruction "Follow the greens" Heathrow has had for many many years this sytem whereby the green taxiway lights indicate the exact path to be followed. I can't see it as too difficult a problem to replace "progressive taxi?" with that.vololiberista

When i was about to join VATSIM one of the things that was the most scary was to be able to taxi without the progressive taxi feature in FSX. After a few runs offline without using the progressive taxi feature I figured out that it wasnt scary at all and that it was infact very easy. Just keep the ground chart at hand and make sure what your current position is before contacting ground for taxi instructions, then follow the taxi instructions and paint an imaginary line on your charts for where you're supposed to go. Its really easy, and its how the pros do it as well. Works great, even for a n00b like me
