September 16, 201015 yr Great post by Austin detailing some of the new features of XP10 including multi-core, advanced weather, ATC and scenery engine.Check it out herehttp://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?showtopic=47604&st=0 Matthew S
September 16, 201015 yr The one thing that stands out in that post, is he's still talking about 20 AI aircraft affecting performance too much. Is X-Plane 10 going to allow more, and will the performance impact really be that severe as he seems to suggest? FS2004 and FSX allows hundreds, and if you have a good computer, the frame rate impact is minimal. I really want X-Plane 10 to succeed, as MS Flight, may or may not have the features hardcore simmers need, and Aerosoft's is a big question mark. X-Plane 10 looks like the most viable platform for the future of hardcore simmers. The 3 main areas it needs to address, to be successful, are the visibility issue, ATC, and AI limits. The first 2 I believe is being addresed, and I thought also the the AI limits, but after reading this post, I'm not so sure. Actually there is a 4th issue. Platform stability. He needs to wait for release of a stable initial version, and maybe plan on 1 or 2 service packs far apart, rather then the frequent updates he currently does. Doing so will scare off the big developers, just like it does now. Thanks Tom My Youtube Videos! http://www.youtube.com/user/tf51d
September 16, 201015 yr Great post by Austin detailing some of the new features of XP10 including multi-core, advanced weather, ATC and scenery engine.Check it out herehttp://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?showtopic=47604&st=0Ouch, although he mentions some good news (in typical Austin style...) the news about aditional AI aircraft (a max of 20 and insisting on using the full flightmodel for them) is bad news for AI addicts. It also looks like Austin is developing using his own 8 Core Mac Pro as the sweet spot. Nice if you have the cores for it but that 2 core Notebook (or iMac) might suffer. Its also clear Austin still hates photo scenery. Its hard being a photo scenery developer for Austins Sim. There are some great photo scenerys for X-Plane and photo scenery can run great. I feel photoscenery is more graphics card dependent, a decent dual core with photo scenery can look beter than a downgraded 'plausible world' on 'just'2 cores. So it looks like improved ATC for a max of 20 AI aircraft. I think most people would be happier with a large number of AI aircraft with dumbed down flightmodels. The plausible world for X-Plane 10 sounds good but it needs to look OK on the dual cores with 3 - 4 Gb of RAM that are mainstream now. If the plausible world at low / medium obect density with 10 AI craft and ATC runs OK on those main stream PC's X-Plane 10 has a good chance to sell to more of the FS-X simmers. (I don't mean covert to here, I think its crazy to use just 1 flightsim).
September 16, 201015 yr Actually there is a 4th issue. Platform stability. He needs to wait for release of a stable initial version, and maybe plan on 1 or 2 service packs far apart, rather then the frequent updates he currently does. Doing so will scare off the big developers, just like it does now.It takes a while to get used to. Most X-Plane veteran users just use 2-3 releases from the flood of releases. Most of us keep the old release when we upgrade. I believe that for version 9 used the stable releases for 9.40, 9.50 (9.55) and when it looks good I wil go for 9.6x most developers use the same strategy. The reason for the 20 AI aircraft is the full aerodynamic modeling Austin insists on. An AI that uses simplified (dare I say it, lookup table based) flightmodels could give us many more AI aircraft (and I'm all for it). The 20 highdef AI planes flying realisticly might have its own charm but I rarely use the AI planes in X-Plane 9.
September 16, 201015 yr Looks stunning, absolutely can't wait! The 20 AI I don't think is a problem, as long as those 20 are relatively close. I don't want the 20 spread out around the world, so as long as they are within a reasonable distance, thats great! The 3D buildings look awesome too. And the new lighting pics look great. And the weather system sounds great. If all of this works well together, this will be a winner. I can't wait to load up an airport, autogen on as high as my new computer can handle, full of these new AI aircraft, at sunset with all of the new lighting, and a storm front moving in!I only wonder how stable the 10.0 release will be. If they want this out be the Holidays, they only have a month or two left before I would think they have to start making the DVDs. And I haven't heard about any betas or anything, but I have heard that early releases in the past have had problems. Maybe they will do a pre-order (other than the one they apparently did at osh kosh), and allow some of those people be a part of the beta? Who knows? Considering that first impressions are incredibly important, I really hope Laminar can get this right!time to start eagerly waiting...... Daniel Miller
September 17, 201015 yr Seems Orbx has no problem with orthophotos... how did this become an X-plane issue? Oh right they don't have any addon developers that take scenery seriously.

September 17, 201015 yr Commercial Member Seems Orbx has no problem with orthophotos... how did this become an X-plane issue? Oh right they don't have any addon developers that take scenery seriously.Seems to me, after this long, there 2 types of posters in the avsim x-plane thread.Mature people with criticisms and IMMATURE people with criticisms. You have just ensured your place in one of the above categories.Thank you for your post.
September 18, 201015 yr Yeah I've never heard of anyone misplacing a walmart from an aeriel photo, a DOQ, or a satellite image. Actually if you bother to use any of the existing orthophoto databases, not only does it show the correct location of walmarts, but you can view the walmart in 360 degrees. Oh wait it even gets stupider, since his so called 100% accurate roads are all made from guess what?
September 18, 201015 yr Commercial Member Veeray, are you actually planning on posting something constructive?Or better yet, maybe you can tell us when your simulator is coming out. What's even funnier is that you actually read Austins statement about x plane 10. And that's all you have to say about it?I guess that based on your last 2 posts (and most of your others) you won't be getting x plane 10. So there really is no need for you to keep trolling these forums.Have a nice day.G
September 18, 201015 yr Fine write your government and tell them the billions of dollars they wasted acquiring this data is no good because Austin says so...Or why don't you go to USGS.GOV website and see for yourself what they use. It's free...download your entire city if you want. End then tell me they suffer from anything in Austins list. The bottom line Austin is making all these baseless claims for a reason in order to promote his new scenery engine, what he doesn't realize that people like me would get offended by it.
