PMDG ideas on wide screen flight simulation?

Featured Replies

When it comes to using monitors for your PC, it seems that people end up buying wide screens. For example ones that can go up to 1920x1080. I upgraded to a new PC and the graphic card will go up to this resolution. However I still have my dell 4:3 monitors 1024x720 because FS9 and FSX cockpits seem to be designed around the squarer 4:3 screens. What are PMDGs ambitions for wide screen Flight SImming, would they consider designing 2d cockpits for wide screen in the future? I understand that it is possible to edit the panels in Photoshop. I do know this program well, but I don't like doing this because it kills the magic, when knowing how it is made.I am one of those pilots who likes using 2d panels over 3d virtual cockpit. And if possible would like to use as many monitors as possible to have a better view outside. I would love to get a large wide screen, but am not sure the best way of using it?What is the best way to set up monitors. To improve the vision outside the window? If you have every flown into VHHX with the PMDG 747, you will know what I mean, about how restrictive Flight Sim can be in looking around.Just a few thoughts, I would be interested in seeing your monitor set ups.

If I remember correctly, PMDG is providing wide screen 2D panels starting with MD11. However, I, too, would like to have one tailor-made for 747.You can still use virtual cockpit in widescreen flawlessly though.

Not sure what you mean, but I run a four monitor setup off one PC and Undock just about everything I hate hunting around to look for. I take a serious FPS hit usually at Cruise around 14+ fps, landing about <10fps. **Edit. Just reread your post now I understand. I tried to stretch the windowed screen all the way out once and everything basically froze. The FPS hit is not as bad when panels are just blown out vice undocked. .DSC01287.jpg

Just add a TrackIR and go virtual and you wont look back (and you can if you wish). I used to hate the virtual cockpit as well until I got my TrackIR. Now I hate the 2D panels.

I have heard of trackIR.Just a few questions. 1. Can you get 3D glasses with trackIR, so that your head seems like it is in the cockpit?2. Is it easy to select buttons and switched in the virtual cockpit. Obviously you can set up keys, but its nice if they work in the cockpit as well.3 Do 3d cockpits look ok? At the moment I am still using FS9, but sometimes everything looks a bit goofey, even with the graphic settings maxed out. With flat knobs etc.(hoping to move on to FSX, when the NGX comes out)

Well no, everything in the cockpit is not easily visible and clickable all the time. One thing a lot of people dont know about the VC is that you can easily look around and zoom by holding down the space bar and panning with the mouse while at the same time, using the mouse wheel to zoom in/out.Sometimes people who have yet to move out of using the 2D panels dont realize how fluid it is to navigate their way like this and think of the VC is kind of just a big, zoomed-out 2D panel.

I can't stand the 2D panels for any aircraft. I have a TrackIR5 and I love it although I don't use it much anymore, cept for when I'm flying aCessna. The pan on my Yoke serves me for most purposes. I also own Nvidia3Dvision, bought it because it seemed cool and it was really cool in BatmanAA and oddly enough it worked really good in FSX. Never tried it in a PMDG aircraft due to the frames being basically doubled and not sure of the FPS hit versus playability. The one thing that drove me crazy was my Saitek gear lights would constantly flicker due to the glasses shuttering.

I have a related question to this thread: I've seen a bunch of people with multimonitor set-ups with the VC spread across the 2 or 3 screens they have. When I try to do this, then it reverts to being on one screen for some reason with the other screen black. Is there a trick to setting this up that I can't figure out? Is this something you can't do in windowed mode? Thanks in advance for any set up ideas.
