Featured Replies

Frequently Asked QuestionsQ: What is "Microsoft Flight?" A: "Microsoft Flight" is a new PC game from Microsoft Game Studios. The new title will be available on the Games for Windows – LIVE service and will bring a new perspective to the long-standing "Flight Simulator" franchise. From new game play elements and enhanced scenery and terrain to new aircraft and integrated content marketplace, it is an entirely new breed of virtual flight. The Games for Windows - LIVE platform sets the stage for all your virtual flight needs while connecting you to a global base of users, content and endless exploration. Microsoft Flight builds off its heritage of deep, immersive simulation and is redesigned to make the experience easier for virtual fliers of all interests and skills. Q: How does “Microsoft Flight” differ from “Flight Simulator?” Why the new name? What’s changed? A: With “Microsoft Flight” we’re approaching the virtual flight genre from the ground up, with the focus on the universal appeal of the experience of Flight. We believe the simplicity of “Microsoft Flight” perfectly captures that vision while welcoming the millions of existing Flight Simulator fans. The new “Microsoft Flight” retains the full fidelity simulation longtime fans have come to expect while offering all players a whole new look and feel, a wide range of new game play and challenges, persistent experiences and social connectivity. Q: How does Games for Windows – LIVE factor in? A: Games for Windows – LIVE introduces a new level of connectivity to virtual flight, enhancing both the social and game play experiences of the title. Content is updated virtually. You can fly solo or join an entire global flight community online. You can easily connect with and facilitate flight experiences with your friends. The addition of Games for Windows - LIVE creates an ubiquitous virtual world of flight that offers easy and engaging access to the magic of flight for all. Q: Who is developing “Microsoft Flight” now that ACES is gone? A: “Microsoft Flight” is being developed internally at Microsoft by a team that includes many of the same creative minds that helped deliver countless entries in the “Flight Simulator” franchise. Q: Why did Microsoft shut down ACES Studio last January? A: Microsoft Game Studios is always evaluating its business model to determine what is best for both gamers and the company. Many factors were considered in the difficult decision to close ACES Studio, but we feel the 2009 closure helped us better align with our goals and long-term development plans. "Microsoft Flight" is being developed by many of the same creative minds that shaped "Microsoft Flight Simulator," and we're excited about delivering a new take on this classic franchise.

???????????????????????

Okay, so it's a bit of an odd thing to post and I know there is a 'Flight' forum, but I think the OP was just trying to be helpful, so there's no need to be mean to someone who was probably just trying to help out.Al

Yes. To tell you the truth, I've never taken the time before this post to read that whole Q + A, and now I have. It is what I thought it would be: a bunch of corporate-speak, with very little real information. :(

It looks more like a straight copy from http://www.microsoft.com/games/flight/ than a genuine contribution on the subject . . .John

Then allow me to put this press release through my Universal Marketing-speak Translator , for you...A: From new game play elements and enhanced scenery and terrain to new aircraft and integrated content marketplace, it is an entirely new breed of virtual flight. We'll be able to track your every move on the internet whilst you play.A: We believe the simplicity of “Microsoft Flight” perfectly captures that vision while welcoming the millions of existing Flight Simulator fans.Translation: We still can't be arsed programming an FMC for the default planes.A: Games for Windows – LIVE introduces a new level of connectivity to virtual flight, enhancing both the social and game play experiences of the title. Translation: It has a built-in VOIP and chat room so you can be annoyed by young people typing or shouting obscenities whilst you try to play it seriously.A: “Microsoft Flight” is being developed internally at Microsoft by a team that includes many of the same creative minds that helped deliver countless entries in the “Flight Simulator” franchise.Translation: We had to re-hire the guys we fired after we realised that was a bit of a bad idea.A: Microsoft Game Studios is always evaluating its business model to determine what is best for both gamers and the company. Translation: We realised ditching one of the few things people genuinely admired about Microsoft was not a great decision and that Bill Gates probably did sort of know what he was doing when he ran the company and built it up from nothing.Al

What I find ironic is that they write these "press releases" as though they graduated cum laude from Harvard Business School, and then they'll end up releasing a product targeted at someone at the 'Rainbow Friends School'.

I suppose it was my post which I thought qwas quite mild given that:a) the OP ignored the pinned posts in other forums relating to FlightB) offered old informationc) simply cut-&-pasted Microsoft's press release, which is a breach of forum rulesd) presumed we were ignorant about it.

Yup, that's all true, but my comment about not being mean was because I do sometimes feel we ought to cut people a bit of slack and suggest things rather than immediately deciding that something warrants a smart reply, as it could put people off joining in the forums and I certainly don't want Avsim to be the kind of place which discourages people from joining in. Look at how many people slagged off POSKY's forums because of that attitude. At the end of the day, the OP might not have been completely au fait with the forum layout and probably just posted it in an effort to inform people, so it wasn't actually doing any harm, in fact quite the reverse for anyone who's never seen that press release. So laying into someone who has that kind of intent with 'hello?' and 'what planet are you on?' types of comments is indeed mean.Al
