Rain on Windscreen

Featured Replies

For as long as I have been flying FSX, whenever it rains I have never seen rain on my windscreen like I have on YouTube. you know rain droplets difting up the screen as you fly. What am i missing, is there a setting I haven't got set high enough, or is it an add on I haven't come across yet. Can anyone provide me information regarding this.Jim K, Greenville, NC

I believe it was removed by default in FSX, unlike being able to see it in some of the default aircraft of FS9. Though there are developers out there that have brought it back, but few. I recall a mention of this in another post, so might want to do a search for more in depth answers. :(

ACES broke the rain FX in FSX.FS9 aircraft in FSX may get their rain effects back if you copy the rain textures from FS9 to FSX.But, there are only a handful of genuine FSX aircraft (ie compiled with the FSX xtoMDL tool) that have the effect and that is because the developer has put it in. The aircraft named below is one of those that does have rain FX.

And the PMDG Jetstream 41.

Thanks for the responces, I think I won't worry about the effects seeing as it is not a simple fix. With my luck it would affect frame rates anyways.

If all you're seeing is a normal transparent windscreen with no rain FX on it, then you've been quite lucky ! With lots of add-on a/c developed for FS9, if it rains, the windscreen goes completely opaque. For these you do need to copy across the rain textures from FS9 as anthony31fs has mentioned in order to get transparency back (but still no rain FX).

Have you checked into this possible "fix" from Microsoft?http://www.microsoft.com/Products/Games/FSInsider/tips/Pages/SupportAlertAdd-onAircraftCockpitsOpaqueintheRain.aspx

I believe that fix rpelaces the FS9 VC Rain textures with FS9 versions as discussed above. It fixes the opaque windscreen problem but doesn't provide actual rain FX on the windscreen.

Well, there are a few aircraft around in FSX offering this effect. But the devs always mention that it's quite some work to get this thing showing up. Realair Duke, Lotussim L-39, Anthony's fine Sierra, the PMDG j41 and maybe more. I'm wishing for more to come or getting some update to enable it. Maybe the Orbx Lancair follows for example. A2A titles would be fine with VC rain too, especially when looking at the already high detail there on the rest of the plane.Another great feature with a high workload behind it but some amazing visual results is the cockpit lighting when done in multi stage and therefore far beyond any simple on/off toggling in my eyes.

Flight has a VC Rain fix that should fix this issue. It works for all payware and freeware aircraft and not just Flight 1 aircraft.http://www.flight1software.com/fsxtools/f1_fsx_vcrainfix.exeHope this helps,
Not again. That "fix" simply replaces the 32 missing "vcrain..." files with completely transparent textures. While it does fix the opaque window problem, it does not re-enable the rain effects. The link to the "official fix" from MS/ACES does both, as does simply copy/pasting the 32 missing bitmaps from FS9's ..\texture folder to FSX's ..\texture folder. In both instances however, it only works for FS9 compiled aircraft used in FSX. For FSX native compiled models, the modeler(s) have to re-create the "vc rain" using custom code.

ACES broke the rain FX in FSX.
Ant, I suppose one could look at it that way, but truthfully what ACES did was remove support for the chained texture animation system from FSX's SDK tools, and coded a completely new shader-based system.Obviously, FSX itself continues to provide backwards run-time support for chained texture animations, since FS9 compiled models will have the vc rain effects provided the 32 missing textures are installed... :(

I am trying to run this file to fix VC rain textures, but it won't run? It tell me the path is wrong and invalid, despite trying 2 different download location, one from Google and the one below; please help!

Hmmm.  It works for me.  It downloads to your computer first then runs.  Maybe it needs to be told to run as Administrator.  I have my FSX located in the default FSX folder.  Perhaps it cannot find the textures to change if not installed in the default folder.  But then most programs look for where FSX is installed by looking in the registry so that should not be a problem but mentioning it just as a possible reason it is not working.

Best regards,

Jim
