Wondering what the goal was with the site redesign?

Have to agree - what a pile of doo doo. Such a shame as clearly there has been a considerable amount of (misguided?) work here.

...and has anyone else noticed how bad the 'new' search engine in the library is, it does not seem to matter what you type, it throws up just about every file in the data base... maybe it's just me... :Hypnotized:

Cheers, Dale.

The problem I am struggling to find is that this has been months in development, months of planning, organizing and testing and this is what they thought was modern?A lot of man hours has gone into this and I am very greatful to the whole team at AVSIM to put effort into a new website design, and most people did want a new layout, it's just we weren't exactly thinking to this extreme. The website has gone from extremely plain and boring to extremely over the top and messy. To me, the new website looks like one of those websites that appear when you type in the wrong URL and it comes up with a SPAM website, adverts everywhere, text all over the place and you haven't a clue what's what.I actually thought I had typed in the wrong AVSIM URL when I first went on because I was so shocked.Other than that, the libary is a different story, while there are some bugs with the search feature, the layout and design is brilliant, the libary is user friendly and appealing to the eye, so I must congrats everyone on that, as to me it looks very professional. It's a shame I can't say the same for the new website layout, i'm no boff at this, and I know a lot of effort and hard work has gone into it, but it just feels like the web designer has used a website design program like "Freewebs (Now just called: Webs)" as a method to design the new page.Hopefully in the months to come certain issues will be sorted and over time the website will become more and more appealing, but at the moment is looks like a SPAM website.Sorry to be harsh, but I had a lot of excitement over the new website, as I had countless e-mails sent to me saying about the new site, like it was going to be something which was going to really show AVSIM is in the 21st century, but like I have said, i'm very grateful to all the effort and hard work that has been put into it, and I am not crictizing that, just that the website isn't appealing at first glance and like I have said, the new libary looks brilliant as far as im concerned, really enjoying it!That's just my opinion, Cheers allVirtual Reality

The reason was so that you would all have something to complain about........and it worked. Maybe give the staff a few days to work on things, but that would be too much to ask for some of you!
Hey Jimmy, everything posted here to date was very constructed criticism. Little buddy, if you cant maturely handle it, then --------> leave. Please!

Ya right a quote from post #16:"what a pile of doo doo"That is just sooooooooooo constructed.Or how about this one:"Guys, this new avsim design is TERRIBLE!"Lastly:"New site is awful!"Maybe actually read the posts here before posting.

I think that we all consider ourselves to be part of the "Avsim Family" and as family we tell each other the truth right? So, with that said, I have to admit looking at the front page was like my wife putting on a very non-flattering new outfit to go out to dinner and I'm in one of those situations where I have to tactfully say: "Soooooo, you're gonna wear THAT huh?"So as an IT \ Business consultant please allow me these few constructive critiques.1. The new format is extremely crowded which gives the front page a very cluttered and "thrown together feel"2. The smattering of advertising seemingly randomly all over the place throws off the formatting which adds to the "thrown together feel"3. A website should be like decorating a room, you place objects where you want the observer's eyes to focus and be lead around the room from one interesting piece to another - in this case the readers eyes dart around the page with various flashing ads, articles, etc....again the theme is pretty chaotic.4. The advertisements are WAY too large and flashy for the clean underlying theme of the page. This gives the impression that the focus and intent of the page is advertising and not articles.5. The Avsim logo at the top is formatted in a way that it is not naturally part of the webpage so it looks like another framed advertisement instead of an integrated logo that belongs to the website.6. A lot of huge, blinking advertisements totally destroy the look and feel of the page. They are a huge distraction to the point that reading the headlines is very unpleasant...almost like trying to read a book with a barking dog outside your window. I think the underlying move was to go with a more Web 2.0 look which is clean and modern and underneath the clutter the format could be quite nice and fresh. But, with all the clutter and articles smashed together you've lost the original base of the page. The result makes the Avsim page look like one of those "fake" advertising sites that squat on domain names. The above comments were NOT meant to offend especially since I'm sure a lot of work went into the new page. I hope that Avsim takes another look at the page and the format so that the true underlying clean design of the page can shine through.Just may 2 cents worth....
I feel that what Mike posted put into words exactly how I feel about it, these are some very good points, but I also must say I really do appreciate the work and effort Avsim staff are doing to make this a better place, Rome was built in a day. I will be staying with Avsim regardless and for all you folks saying your going to leave because of the website grow up! are you really that starved for attention.

Was another thread on this really necessary? Didn't the WOW thread say it all!! This just seems to be piling on with no new ideas.
I didn't create this thread to be another "I hate the new page" thread. I wanted to understand what the goals of the redesign were. Without knowing that, how can we provide effective criticism or advice to improve it? I know there are many web developers out there in the community, I'm sure they could offer advice and perhaps time to help meet those goals more effectively.Personally, my knowledge of web design is quite primitive, but I can at least help the brass understand how I use their creation.

From the format, it appears the goal was to be more organized. Before the News, reviews and library was mushed together in a linear fashion. Now there in their own dedicated section on the page. I think the changes they have done since introduction, ie: remove the scrolling graphics for the reviews, that looked more like ads, and switching positions for the News and Reviews help a lot.

Thanks

Perhaps you should just take an extra breath before posting then possibly you would not come off sounding like a negative ja as you often do in these forums.

Calling Jim a "ja" is uncalled for.If I remember correctly Mitch, it was the same type of comments you made like this that got you banned last time around when you went by "Deltaflight". It will be interesting to see how long you last this time around if you keep up with the "little buddy" comments and calling people jackasses.

Kettle meet black.

I loved how I could just punch in "avsim.com" and the 7 bold lines at the top were the top headlines in the FS world. Right now, I have to search and search for those headlines.

Hi Mr MtDeltaVA aka "Deltaflight" and good bye!I banned you last year and I'll ban you again and again. Not so difficult to find you with your snide and rude comments for signature.
