i7 2600k makes FSX scream uncle!

Featured Replies

Mike: Stephen: Hi good posts: I jumped on the bandwagon with the 2600K yesterday, and am in the process of overclocking (who'd of thunk it?) Tell me - are you guys running Turbo and Speedstepping enabled? How do you get it to run at a solid frequency - like 4.5 gig. OR - it doesn't matter??
Hi Paul,Congratulations on being a new addition to the Sandy Bridge FSX family! :) Getting to be quite the club. I use Turbo without speedstepping or hyperthreading with a 1.435 v-core for 5.0, and 1.385 for 4.8 GHz. Run it with Prime 95 for about an hour to make sure it's stable! Have you flown with it yet?Kind regards,

I like my power savings enabled (Speedstep & C1E). HT off like Stephen, to keep the CPU cooler. As for Turboboost, it needs to be enabled to set the multi any higher than 33/34 (2500K & 2600K respectively), if you are already at 4.5GHz you Know that for sure, but it doesn't mean than Turbo will kick in, the core clock is fixed at 45x100 = 4.5GHz. If you disable Speedtep you will see it stays at 4.5GHz no matter what the load is

I too like Speedstep and C1E. I like the idea of power saving - in the end, it's my money, and saving a bit on the CPU, maybe it lasts longer.Mine is now well OK somewhere around 1.45 or so, for 5Ghz. At least I use the offset voltage with 0.22.

Well, guys that's great! Thanks for the education, everyone - it's a whole new world isn't it! The first 'normal' flight - BirdDog at Orcas - I had Turbo/SS/C1E,C3 & C6 disabled, and locked at 4.5 gig/1.27vCore - FSX locked at 30, and it seemed smoother, but not noticeably different to the 950 at 4.4485.A little background to the query: I run Ultimate Defrag, and a week or two ago I followed this setup:- http://www.disktrix.com/Can_Your_Defrag_Software_Do_This_2.htmIt didn't make the pc any faster, and it did cause the C: to thrash - at least that was my supposition: but the main issue was my mouse seemed "jerky" - as if something was going on in the background that was taking up lots of cycles: This transposed itself over to the new proc/board. I don't know that this affected the flight, but the mouse issue was a pain, so what I did was to manually go through all the compressed files, uncompress them and do another defrag. This totally fixed both the thrashing and the mouse issue, but I didn't get a chance to fly again until last night after I re-enabled those parameters - but we had guests, and so I haven't had time to do anything else until this morning, so, as you folks seem to be running locked I will re-do it and go from there. Nothing happens quickly, does it?All that said - I reckon this proc at 4.7 or 5.0 gig will absolutely put FSX in it's place - as the greatest iteration of the MS FlightSim series. Finally - Thanks to Mike T, as the instigator of my upgrade! I am so glad I bought this. Actually sold the 950/P6T and memory for $400, added another $300 and Bingo!Again - thanks for the responses. All the Best,

What would be really interesting is reporting frame rates with the PDMG 747 with all the sliders to the right. I get 200 fps with the Cessena 172 and all the sliders at 50%, but with the PDMG 747 and all sliders to the right, I get <10 fps. A HUGE difference. This is with a 3 year old Dell 720 H2C with dual 8800 GTX cards and a Quad Exreeme 2.97 OC'd to 3.5 Ghz, 4 GB ram and Vista 32.Wednesday, I get the new computer 990X and nVidia 590 card with 12 GB ram OC'd to 4 gHz. I hope see 30+ fps with all the sliders to the right with the PDMG 747.

Sorry to burst your bubble Paul, but I can't tell you now: you won't see 30 FPS, not even close. Actually there's no computer able to do that with all sliders to the right

I'll be looking for your FSXMark11 submission Wednesday evening (stock 737 of course) Whistle.gif

All to the right? :Bring It On: It's going to depend where you are, Paul, plus all the other (mainly Bojote's) variations.. don't get your hopes up. Again - because of the previous comment - I can almost guarantee you will be mightily disappointed. I know almost nothing about the 990X, other than from the Intel spec comparison chart: http://ark.intel.com/Compare.aspx?ids=52586,52214, and it has 6 cores (which fsx is (mostly) going to ignore) and 12MB cache instead of 8.You're going to see 30 at KORS with a number of FSX and addon aircraft and 100% GA, but you won't be doing that on the ground at (Orbx PNW) Seattle with 50%AI, 10%GA, 20% airport clutter, 0% cars and some weather... in fact - 4 gig is only a starting place... and the 590 is not exactly the card which will blow away the 580. As you say it will be interesting, so please - post back when you've had the rig for a couple of days.

I run a liquid cooled I7-2600K (oc to 4.1) with a 580GTX and 8 gig ram and running the PMDG 747 at PNW KSEA I can only push an average of 26-30 FPS. This is with NickN settings he posted at simforums so I'm not even close to all sliders right. I run 8xSS and 16AF at 1280x1024. Not much for AI traffic but still run 30/30 no cars and low airport traffic just to benchmark. Don't expect to see 30 fps per second with all sliders to the right.Compared to my previous quad core at 2.8 this is a dream come true as I just finished tweaking all my settings and now can get down to the business of flying. I don't use Bojote's tweaks anymore just a couple basic ones NickN recommended and it runs smooth as silk rarely running below 30 FPS average; which I have it locked at that with an external FPS limiter. Now to buy a second cheap computer to run other utilities on and network to FS :) Wife will love that.Sean

Yeah, I doubt you'll get 30 FPS with everything set to the right in a complex a/c and dense airport. Then again, sometimes FSX looks worse if you set everything to the right anyways, especially the water.I can get a solid 30 FPS at FSDT's JFK in the PMDG 747 with medium high settings on my old rig, so you can probably do pretty well as long as you dont put everything to the max.
