PC Pilot (May - June) Summary of "Flight" Interview

Featured Replies

Going with a new engine is a great thing, even at the cost of old add-ons in my opinion. There comes a time when the current engine just can't cut it, and FSX was that point for me. I'm not worried about their "store" solution either. People are just assuming the worst with no real reason other than fear. Add-on prices have been spiraling out of control without MS. A little stability and quality control might just benefit us. I know I am tired of buying simple GA planes with obvious bugs in them which are released with insufficient testing. If things do get too pricey, stick with an alternative.

PC Pilot, another magazine to go to 'every two months'. I think they underestimated those loyal to FS9, their magazine recently is (as is commerrcially expected) heavily biased towards FSX.Was there any mention of timescales?

I really wish Microsoft had not chosen PC Pilot for exclusive rights to news on their new Sim (if that's what they have done?) PC Pilot as has been mentioned is a two monthly publication and by the very nature of the format its out of date when it hits the streets, how many here used to buy reams of hobby magazines before the internet, then realised everything in the magazines could be found on the Internet and as news happened, not so bad in a monthly publication, but in the case of PC Pilot, every two months?, even if MS were to give PC Pilot exclusive new news this very second its going to be roughly another 6 weeks before the next magazine hits the stands.Aside from that, there is really nothing of substance about MS Flight in the current issue of PC Pilot, its spread over 3 pages but the actual text in the form of ambiguous Q & A's takes up roughly half a page, its early days for MS Flight though.Dont get me wrong, I like PC Pilot and have every issue since the 2nd or 3rd ...its about the only magazine I still buy since the Internet (mostly) took over hobby magazines.

Since PC Pilot is the only (i.e. exclusive) provider of this information, it's not possible for the information to be out of date.

True, but only if you don't mind a potential 2 monthly update. All I'm saying is web sites like Avsim and others have supported Microsoft flight simulation for far longer than PC Pilot has been in existence, why not grant them that recognition and let them publish new MS Flight news as it happens, going to a two monthly magazine stand publication seems like a backward step to me ... and again, I'm not totally slam dunking PC Pilot, its a good read, I like Chris Frismuths articles in particular.

That is your assumption, the premise of which may well not be true.

Just wondering if one of the reasons why MS Flight team have chosen PC Pilot for exclusive rights to the new sim news is because there is no forum comeback with a two monthly magazine publication to question them ... I know Aces got a hard time on here and other forums with FSX but nothing compared to what the combat sim guys like IL2 Cliffs of Dover get on their own forums ... if only all criticism and comments could be constructive, but I guess we are a passionate lot and that then spills over and gets out of hand sometimes ... one things for sure, the MS Flight guys are willing to talk to PC Pilot but not Avsim and other dedicated civilian flight sim sites (or so it seems just now) and that's a damn shame for whatever reason IMHO.And another thought ... one of the best things Microsoft ever did was to let everyone test drive Windows 7 before it came out, as I recall anyone who wanted to could do this and I grabbed that opportunity, as a result I pre ordered Windows 7 and think its their best OS to date, probably in thanks to open beta testing ... I'm not suggesting MS Flight should be the same, just that they be more open ... one of the things as a non beta tester I detested when FSX was in the works was asking if the sim would support more than one core or SLI with the hardware I wanted to upgrade to at the time ... a totally innocent question, the dev guys who posted would never answer but many of the known FSX beta testers would slam dunk me for being so impudent and asking such bold questions and to just wait and see, all they achieved was alienating genuine customers and causing bad feeling ... we need to iron this sort of attitude out IMHO :) I mean, what is honestly wrong with asking in advance what hardware to buy in preparation for the sim I am looking forward to, and that is one reason why I don't ask such questions on forums any more in relation to MS Sims.Hopefully MS Flight will be more hardware efficient than FSX was, meanwhile I'll not ask what hardware to buy for MS Flight but forge ahead with a future Ivy Bridge upgrade at end of year (I'm a PC performance enthusiast too) and buy a couple of large SSD's for FSX just now that wont go wrong in the future ... my current 250 GB FSX install takes ages to load the tiny area I want to fly in before I'm in the aircraft, something I also hope is addressed in MS Flight.

could it simply be that PC Pilot has the largest readership?

I hope you are joking, otherwise you don't have a grasp of things.

too funny .. especially since you dont know me

Do you honestly think that a twice monthly paper magazine from the UK is read by more flight sim enthusiasts worldwide than the possible INSTANT same info here on Avsim, Fligtsim.com and SimHQ?Do you really?

I think its more of a target market then readership. Think of who visits these forums. People who ALREADY KNOW flight simming. They already have us! They dont need to spend a lot of resources to get us into the game. They just need to make it a good sim and we will come flocking! On the other hand, you have John Q that has a passing interesting FS, but doesent visit the forums. Thats about 98% of the possible market. Thats who the PC Pilot mags are selling too I think. As someone who has made 3rd party aircraft for 10 years, flight simming is suffering from massive attrition right now, and the few users that are on these forums are some of the most picky users in the history of gaming. We need new blood in order for this market to contenue being a viable market to tap with new products. Im not saying to make Playschool Flight Sim to get casual gamers, but marketing to the public to get new users is always good. Im sure that when the release time comes closer, we will see them cast a wider net that will include us. That I think would be the sign of an approaching release date. Not some rumor from a friend who knows a guy who sat next to someone who said something. =) Again, I will just wait till its done. Its not like we havent waited for years before.

MS doesn't care to post at AVSIM, FlightSim or Sim HQ because of the rudeness they were exposed to the last time they tried this.

That may also be a factor, but can ya blame them? Look at the enviornment on most of the forums where a thread on Aerosoft supporting Flight or not turns into a big debate about the Concord? Shame%20On%20You.gif

Is that an official response or just your opinion? If MS really think this they are out of touch, they are not gods to be worshipped.MS Should talk to its soldiers in the same successful; way it did to the public Windows 7 release, but thats up to them..I dont think they will do it, what grates is folk like Bill Leaming constantly reminding us he will be on the team and then dishing out sarcastic comments to us mere mortals every other post.I'm not joking, its attitudes like that, that put me clean off any new MS Flight Sim.Honestly.
