B737NGX Video-- Centre Tank Fuel Pump LOW Pressure Light

Featured Replies

Hi, this is my first post on the forum. I have been an Airline Check Captain for last 3 years on the B737ng and a total time of approximate 9000hrs. on this Beauty....ok , now to the point....the new Video on the VFR Depature Night from time 1:20 to 1:30 shows that the Master caution , after the light Test is reset for Fuel Annunciation...and on the fuel panel the Center tank LOW Pressure Light are illuminated with the Center tank fuel pump switches in the Off position.Following is an extract from the Boeing FCOM Fuel Chapter:Center Tank FUEL PUMP LOW PRESSURE LightsIlluminated (amber) – fuel pump output pressure is low and FUEL PUMP switchis ON.Note: With the Center (CTR) tank FUEL PUMP switches ON, continuousillumination of one LOW PRESSURE light for 10 seconds illuminatesMASTER CAUTION and FUEL system annunciator lights.Extinguished – fuel pump output pressure is normal, or FUEL PUMP switch isOFF .Long story short......with the center tank fuel pump switches in the OFF position ....Center tank fuel pump LOW Pressure Light Should NOT be illuminated.Hope my little observation helps bringing the the New NGX closer to what we all are expecting...REAL.Even with all the nit-picking , am a BIG FAN of the PMDG 737 from day 1 since its launch.Thanks.Rgds.,Ganesh

HelloI don't really understand the problem here. I mean I'm not an expert, but from what I saw in the video. At 1:35 Pumps are ON and Lights are ON, so the switched are placed to off which make them go out. And at about 2:18 you see clearly that the Fuel Quantity for L/C/R are 7.49 0.00 7.50 which explains why the Warning was on with the pumps ON.So for me it is perfectly working as per the book here, and the situation was created to have the warnings on and to show it to us.Cheers.Aurelien

All the 6 pumps were turned ON, and there was no fuel on the center tank. This is the reason why the center tank low pressure lights were illuminated. At 1:36 to 1:38 the pilot turns OFF both center tank pumps and the low pressure lights go down.I did not see any moment while the center tank low pressure lights stay illuminated with its pumps OFF.Regards,Marcelo Monteiro

I havent seen the video but the last two answers answered that question.JackColwill

on the fuel panel the Center tank LOW Pressure Light are illuminated with the Center tank fuel pump switches in the Off position.
I have just rewatched the video and if you pay close attention, you'll see that, actually, the center fuel pumps were indeed set to ON, as Marcelo said. Because there was no fuel in the tanks, the LOW PRESS lights were illuminated. The pumps were then switched to the OFF position, deactivating the warning. Increase the bightness of your monitor to 100% and you'll be able to see that clearly.

Ganesh-Welcome- and thank you for the feedback. The correct behavior was masked be the darkness of the cockpit in that particular video. We'll have one of our tech team go through it one more time just to be certain nothing was missed- but they beat me up on the whole one pump vs. two pumps and whether you'd see the six pack annunciation in various configurations last month- so we are pretty certain it is up to spec. Our tech guys are relentless.

Hi Robert, I inatially watched the video at 320p and later at 720p...made a lot of sense....and Marcelo did clarify my doubt....so all in all .....i am convinced that there is nothing wrong in the video. And let me take this opportunity to thank the PMDG Team to keep Our Dream Alive.CheersGanesh

Can someone explain why it's needed to turn the fuel pumps off after their tanks are empty. I mean what's the need for? To save power or to avoid something?

Hi Devinci,Empty tanks will have vaporized fuel, and with constantly running pumps there is a small but existing risk of static electricity forming due to the small liquid amount. Combined with the fact that the pumps are electrically driven. There is a tiny risk of a spark forming (not sure if it's due to static electricity or pump operation itself), and if that should happen in the gaseous atmosphere of the empty tank, it could ignite the entire tank and possibly lead to a fuel-system wide explosive fire. The pumps should be stopped just before they are no longer covered by the remaining fuel. Not sure, what the spec is in the NG though. In the 757 the center pumps should be turned off when there's 0.2 tonnes of fuel remaining in the tank. To keep the pumps covered.edit: also, the secondary reason: why would you want to run pumps on an empty tank... the pumps will constantly cavitate flammable air to the system. No reason to do that, and wear out the pumps.Tero

This is the same in the NG. The pumps should remain covered in fuel when in operation and they should never be running dry or partially dry. Scavenger pumps drain the centre tank into one of the main tanks (No. 1 I believe, but it's been a while since I've checked the books).Cheers,Nick Jones
