737 NGX concerns and questions

Hey gang, I was comparing some of the repaints for the two NGX developers and I got to thinking that I don't remember a 1 to 1 comparison of the 2d main panels. Here goes. I labelled one of them so you couldn't get them confused. 2d_panels_norm.jpg

1) If you knew what you know now, would you still get the NGX?Definitely yes.2) Are you getting the performance expected from your system in the NGX?Quite, yes. After the hype, thought I'd be getting a bit more, but it's enough considering the detail.3) Have you had to turn down sliders to get acceptable performance? No. I get 20-40fps, which is enough in general. It's fluid - that's way more important!4) Does PMDG have a refund policy like F1 has?No.
wow..5 ghz? 1.5gb memory video card? And you get 20 fps? Has FSX really dulled us that much to reality of what a good FPS is? I better hide this post before my son has a good laugh. He and his FPS games!!

Yes in extreme situations.I was researching yesterday the problem of those 20fps... and found it. I was running my water on 2.0 High, meaning reflections of clouds and scenery in the water. While it did look nice, it looked unreal when flying high, which I do mostly. So I set it to 2.0 low and now FPS are around 50fps.Be aware that I'm running most of things very high, LOD 7.5, 4096 for texture, very dense AG, highest scenery, 90nm clouds etc. And still maintaining around 30fps in a heavy situation now with NGX VC.

1) If you knew what you know now, would you still get the NGX?
When I bought the NGX a few days ago, I would characterize myself as 70% motivated (if you could quantify enthusiasm). From the perspective of about 20 logged hours in the NGX, I have easily moved to 95+% motivated. No regrets.
2) Are you getting the performance expected from your system in the NGX?
Better FPS than with the Level-D, and in fact NGX had a lot of good information in the manual about FSX tweaking in general. Performance of the NGX is far above what I would have expected and accepted.
3) Have you had to turn down sliders to get acceptable performance?
Tough to answer, since I installed the NGX on a relatively new laptop PC with a recent install of FSX. I went through a lot of tweaking and configuration at the level of both the graphics card and FSX. I have what I would characterize as a rather aggressive approach to detail orientation in my settings (moving ground traffic, 50% Airline AI traffic, extremely dense scenery and very dense autogen, detailed clouds, etc). With an i5 cpu an ATI 5650 1GB card and 4 GB RAM (VAIO 15" Windows 7 Professional 64-bit laptop) I get around 20 fps average. Weather will take a toll more than anything else. I rarely (generally speaking) get less than say 11 fps in weather at a busy airport, and often 30 fps in climb/cruise (I have an external frame limiter set at 30).
4) Does PMDG have a refund policy like F1 has?
No - intellectual property seldom does - at least in my experience. $70 is dinner for two at a decent restaurant, or a couple of tanks of gas in a Prius. As a PMDG customer, I frankly think this is worth far more than $70. The detail and - dare I say it - love that went into designing and creating this piece of software is nothing short of stunning. I can think of no other purchase I have made for $70 that has made me feel as much a thief as this one. And no, I am not a PMDG employee, friend or otherwise enticed to heap the praises I am. Just a very happy customer. LeeF

1) If you knew what you know now, would you still get the NGX? Sure would, in fact, I expected to pay a lot more for it, and would have done so. However, being a big 737 fan, I was always going to get it to be honest, but now I have it I can confirm that it has the edge over other NGs for FSX in most respects, certainly as far as systems fidelity is concerned, although on the subject of competing products, the iFly NG is not as far behind it as some people imagined it would be.2) Are you getting the performance expected from your system in the NGX? Nope, I'm getting better than I expected. Initially I was not, but upon tarting around with a few things, it runs well, in fact it runs a lot better than I thought it would, although I'd be lying if I said I thought any old computer could run it, and I am planning a computer upgrade in the next few weeks, largely because of the NG, since I would like to put those graphic options back on. At present, if I wanted to run a lot of peripheral devices and other add-ons, I might wheel the iFly out of the hangar instead, since it does use up less resources than the PMDG, but I've had the PMDG one running with Radar Contact, REX and ASE etc, and it managed okay, so this is not as big a factor as I had suspected it might be, and of course both NGs would benefit from an upgrade.3) Have you had to turn down sliders to get acceptable performance? Not really, I dropped the texture detail on my graphics card instead of doing it in FS.4) Does PMDG have a refund policy like F1 has? As we know, no it does not, but then again, they're not having their NG back, even if they ask nicely, it's mine, MINE I TELL YOU! Muhahahahahaha.Al

Thanks for all the replies guys! I did get it and have had it now for 3 weeks and LOVE it! My performance is as good if not a bit better than LVD 767 so I am happy with that. The only issue I have had is that for some reason un-known to me I can no longer use the ENB Mod. I loose my AA when using ENB with the 737 NGX. I looked at the ENB site and they say that is a indication of not enough video memory. My card has 896 mb of ram and I guess that is not enough. @ Chock (Alan) - What exactly did you change your vc texture settings to? Maybe your settings may help me to be able to run ENB Mod again? On my graphics card (ATI not Nvidia), I dropped the overall quality/performance slider down a bit (from the Catalyst system tray option), that made the cockpit stenciled lettering a bit lower res, but still readable. In any case I know what all the switches do, so it hardly mattered since I don't actually need to read the labels, but I'm still going to build a new computer with a better CPU in a week or so, as I'd like the graphics back how they were since dropping that setting also affected the clarity of terrain textures, and that I do mind. But, it runs at 30-50 FPS and unlike many who seem to want to have FPS figures throught the roof, anything over mid twenties FPS is fine by me most of the time, since airliners are hardly doing aerobatics. Singularly the most accurate and rewarding airliner to be built for the FS franchise period. I own both the iFLY and PMDG and PMDG just takes the aircraft to the next level - it simply has no equals. Best sounds, best lighting, best complexity, best visual model and on and on. I can't comment on performance since my system is extremely high end and I have no problems at all even at the most complex airports and 100% AI traffic....your mileage may vary. The ONLY thing that I'm sad about is that PMDG will be making the triple-7 at this level of accuracy and it's probably going to take years before I get my greedy mitts on it. Cry.gif
