You could of course switch to flying online where you have to talk to ATC using your voice. Certainly brings the realism factor up more than 100% in my opinion. Its free as well.

It's part of EVP's default speech package (not the FSX default). I've only ever used the ICAO option, so I can't tell you if they're missing from the FAA option, though I can't imagine that they wouldn't be there. When you start Edit Voicepack you should see a row of icons on the top of the window, with only one of them not greyed out. It's the second-from-left icon, and opens the Update Voicepack Wizard. Click on it. Once the wizard is open you'll see three settings in bold under "Current Settings". These are the settings you can choose as you navigate through the wizard. Make sure that "Change Settings" is checked on the bottom. Click [Next] The descriptions for the first option, "Voice Speed Adjustment", are self-explanatory. Read the description and choose your speech rate. I recommend the maximum. The buttons on the side give you a sample of the selected speech rate, and at Maximum they may seem a bit frenzied, but actually in FSX it is slowed down just a hair because of all the multitasking done by FSX. The Maximum is the closest to real-world speech rates, and in fact real-world speech can actually be even faster, especially in very busy areas were everything happens very quickly. Click [Next]. "Change ATC Phraseology" allows you to choose which real-world phraseology your pilot and the AI and controllers and pilots use, either FAA or ICAO based, but not both simultaneously. Choose one and click [Next]. "Update Airline Call Sign List" simply adds all the callsigns that EVP uses to the call sign list in the airplane selection menu. Recommended. Click [Next]. "Confirm Settings" is just that. Review what you've selected and click [update]. Give EVP a moment to update the speech in FSX, then once it's finished exit out of EVP. You're done. Now just start FSX and enjoy the new ATC.
Thank you for your reply. I feel foolish, as I was just assuming certain popular options would be under both FAA and ICAO. They're not, as ICAO has many more options available (I had never looked there). I'll add more 'spice' to my setup, and thanks again for your instructions.

You're welcome.

So Radar Contact 4 is a direct replacement of the FS ATC running as 3rd party software, correct? Does it include voices? Does it allow me to talk back in voice, like voxATC?
I uses rc4 with meatwater vocpack voices and multicrew experience for talking. (asking clearances, higher/lower level etc.) john

Is FSUIPC the only addon I need or do I need one of the planners as well?

Does the Edit voice pack option actually increase the intelligence of the FS ATC or is it just to make the phraseology better? From the title it sounds like it just changes the phraseology?

With Editvoicepack you can get the same pleasantry phrases used with the FAA set as well as the ICAO set. Just go to the ICAO section in the Community mods Phraseology, and extract the "AC_AGNT_HANDOFF_RESP" phrases, there are six of them. Then re-import them in the My Modification Phraseology section. Then they will be used for both sets. In addition you can add my modifications which are in the FSX/sounds library here. Search for "Editvoicepack Modifications". They will add wind to landing clearance (The default mods already have this for takeoff), and expected flight levels for clearance deliveries. I have additional modifications which I hope to release by the end of the week. (I know I'm late in doing so, but I go tied up in something, and then I lost my system. I'm just just finished recovering it, although I'm on Vista now instead of Windows XP) These will add the destination to initial and final approach clearances. A speed reduction (Hard coded I'm afraid to 180kts) on final Approach clearance. A welcome to your destination, like I hear on VATSIM videos, and sometimes real ATC. on handoff to ground from tower. I also incorporated the suggestions given to me by forum members, such as changing the "You are xxx feet above/below your assigned altitude statements to normal navigational statements. Right now I'm in the process of writing the instructions to install. Check this video out to see what it sounds like. It doesn't include the destination on the approach clearances though.

Thanks

Tom
