October 17, 201114 yr My 920 hates a 21 multiplier but loves a 19 multiplier. 4GHz is easy. I can send you my settings if you like, for reference? Mine is the Asus P6T, but do you have the latest BIOS for your MB and are your temps okay? Which cooler? I have the standard Intel fan that comes with the CPU and temps are good in mid 40's but will definitely get something more capable (water cooling?). There is a more recent BIOS version so I will get that but would also appreciate your settings for reference. Clearly I have a lot of research and learning to do!Also having this problem on my MSI P55-GD85. When I load optimized defaults, it's running at 2.8 GHz. But after a while my PC just shuts it self off. When when I use my overclock profile though, everything is perfectly fine.Try these settings for your default clockspeed: Well that's good to know, was thinking I may have damaged my MB in some way. Will look at your settings.
October 18, 201114 yr Updating the BIOS to ver FJ (as recommend by Gigabyte) appears to have fixed my stability problem and now getting 21X @ 2.8GHz. I have HT on so will give AM=252 a try per Word Not Allowed.
October 18, 201114 yr Commercial Member Mr. Word Not Allowed, Thank you so VERY MUCH for all the information you posted in this thread. Would you consider writing an FSX Affinity Mask and I7-920/930 Guide? It would benefit the community tremendously! Be well. October 18, 201114 yr Just to throw a curve ball, I did some short tests last night, nothing elaborate, and found that with hyperthreading on and using affinity mask = 14, I get better results than hyperthreading off and affinity mask = 84. This is with an i7-920 oc'ed to 3.8GHz. My tests were largely unscientific i.e. I didn't repeat them lots of times, but I did use the same time of day, weather and aircraft (NGX) for each test. The difference between the two was about 5fps, with the Hyperthreading on being the better of the two, so well worth having. With hyperthreading on it seemed to be smoother too, but that could have been a placebo. Can anyone explain why this is the case? Do I have the wrong affinity mask settings above? For now, I think I'll stick with Hyperthreading on. Ed Haslam

You did a test based on some poor conclusions without understanding what AM really does. Your result reflects your settings and everything is as it should(n't) be.No, I am not going to write a guide. It's pointless. Think anyone is gonna really read it? I wrote hundreds of threads on this already, and people do not bother to read.Going to soothe myself now with some Mike Oldfield...

October 18, 201114 yr ...But that CPU should be rocking 4Ghz without any trouble. You should be able to run 4.2 with 21x multi and 200Mhz BCLK. ...This is simply not true. Many 920s will never reach 4.2ghz and a bunch of them wont even reach 4ghz, unless you crank up the voltages way high (personally I think over 1.3v is way high). This is particularly true for older c0/c1 stepping 920s Johan Pettersen

As Martin said, it didn't like high multipliers either. Ed Haslam
October 18, 201114 yr Guys it's easy to figure out your affinity mask value 1) load up your standard Windows calculator, set it to scientific mode. 2) put it to Binary(BIN) so you can only input 1s and 0s 3) figure out which cores you want to use. Remeber them are backwards to 1110 = use core 3,2, and 1 but not Core 0 4) with 1110 in the window switch the calculator back to Dec (Decimal) and voila' your affinity mask value 1110 = 14 1010100 = 84, here on a hyperthreaded system FSX would ignore the first core, and use only the actual(non-hyperthreaded cores), the first digit of this number which would be a zero is not displayed). 11111100 = 252, here The real Core 3,2,and 1 and their hyperthreads are used, Core 0 and its hyperthread is ignored. See, clear as mud...
October 18, 201114 yr If you can't be bothered to help people then why bother posting? Thanks for the help. Thanks a bunch. Enjoy your Mike Oldfield... I bother explaining as much as you bother searching. http://forum.avsim.n...__fromsearch__1 See, clear as mud... Now you got that right!
October 18, 201114 yr I both posting as much as you bother searching. http://forum.avsim.net/topic/346900-affinity-mask-7/page__hl__affinity+mask__fromsearch__1 Now you got that right! I understand the maths, I have no problem with that. I use binary every day. Thanks all the same though...Reading Word Not Allowed's first few posts it looks as though I got the AM setting the wrong way around. So my fault. But all it would have taken would have been a polite couple of words to say 'hey mate, you got the values the wound way around'. I hate the pretentious nature of some people on here sometimes. Either help or don't. I'm cool if you say 'go search' at the beginning, but if you half help and throw your toys out of the pram then what do you expect? You know infinitely more than I do (evidently) about the inner working of FSX. Just wanted some polite help, that's all...Off to listen to some Lindesfarn... Ed Haslam

Listening to now. So I have HT on and AM=252 and FPS is okay. I have set target to 30. I'm running at full resolution 1980x1080 so where do I go from here? I need to over clock for sure but how can I get started without frying my CPU? Please be patient with the Newbie (me).

I have HT on so will give AM=252 a try per Word Not Allowed. Purchased new cpu cooler and found good idiots guide on-line. Now getting 3990 MHz (190 x 21) and temps good (70's) in FSX. A very noticeable improvement! ...I probably wouldn't have bothered before the NGX. Thanks again to PMDG.
