FSX 32 or 64 bit, Which one?

Featured Replies

Hi all,I'm currently using FSX in Windows7 32 bit, I'm considering increasing the RAM on my PC and the Computer store suggested using Windows7 64 bit as the increased RAM would be more beneficial. My question is can anyone suggest the best place to read up on the effects of changing to Windows7 64 bit, when using FSX? Also are there any problems running the add-ons shown below in 64 bit or is it only FSX that runs better? Thanks for any help.

FSX (all add-ons included!) runs better under Win-64.Cheers,- jahman.

If you have a retail Windows 7 disk with both 32 and 64 bit versions, switching to 64 bit would allow you to utilize more memory (32 bit limited to about 3.5 GB ram usage) to improve FSX performance. Since FSX is a 32 bit application, I don't think there is otherwise enough advantage to purchase another Windows 7 disk (OEM 64 bit). I feel that Windows 7 is the best OS for FSX whether 32 bit or 64 bit.I didn't know there was such a thing as a Pentium i3 processor. Do you mean Intel i3? Do you know which socket? Isn't this DDR3 memory as dual channel? If so, you should have a matched pair of 2 GB memory modules, which would be adequate for FSX, even with a 32 bit OS.Am I rambling like an idiot again?

64 bit.

Windows 7 64 bit runs real smooth for mejim

Only problem I had was the Dreamfleet Dakota which used a GPS gauge from Reality XP that in turn requires a program from Garmin which is 16 bit and can't run in x64 windows. There is a newer GPS but it costs more than the Dakota. I have a couple utilities that won't install in Win 7 x64 like Aircraft Container Manager.scott s..

If You run only FSX and nothing else (like FSFK, ASE....), the 64bit benefit will be almost none. FSX cannot utilize more than ~2GB of ram (it is 32bit application), W7 takes approx 900MB, in 32bit OS You still have ~500MB free for Audio drivers, controller's drivers, AVir and so on. I am using besides the FSX: ASE, MCE, FSFK, Autobrakes.......... and I usually have more that 4GB of memory utilization, so I am in benefit of 64bit. Check Your memory usage, and You roughly will have the answer if it is worth spending money for a new OS and precious time for installation

HelloIf a 32bit App is marked as Large Address Aware then it can address up to 4Gb of memory, FSX after SP2 is LAAReally these days with 64bit CPU's, installing the 64bit version and 8gb of memory is the way to go

Thanks all for the replies. The computer store tell me that my version of Windows7 allows me to upgrade from 32bit to 64bit without having to purchase any other copies or versions. My only expense would be the installation of the extra RAM. Thats why I'm interested in knowing if there are any issues with Add on's.That again,

Strange, because I have 64 bit W7 and my o/s together with other processes and FSX (SP2) running never goes past 2.5 gigs of RAM.Now the odd thing is that at a few busy airports, I get an OOM crash if I don't use a page file. If I do use a page file, then it will hand for 30 seconds whilst accessing the page file (I think). So I've never really understood why FSX needs to access the page file when I have 1.5 gigs of system RAM left unused.IAN

Once again, don't mix use of RAM (process working set) with VAS (process committed memory). FSX gets 4 Gb of VAS in x64 environment. RAM (working set) is controlled by the OS.scott s..
