November 21, 201114 yr I'm going to move the OS and FSX (my entire programFiles folder) over and keep my User files on the HDD, music, docs, videos, etc... So the SSD will have the C drive designation. I think this shouldn't pose a problem. Also I hear that this is worth the $20 for the migration: http://www.paragon-software.com/technologies/components/migrate-OS-to-SSD/not sure if anyone has experience with it.. steve d Win7 Ultimate x64 i7-2600k @4.8GHz Asus Sabertooth P67 Mushkin Redline 8GB EVGA GTX 570 SC Corsair Force GT 240GB SSD CoolerMaster SilentPro 1000W PS PMDG737NGX, PMDG747-400, REX2.0, GEX, UTX, MyTrafficX, EzDok

November 22, 201114 yr Author Finished the SSD install. Went very smoothly, just a couple clicks of the software and it does everything- took about 1.5 hrs to copy 170GB. Well worth the $$. Takes me about 10 seconds to get from POST to login screen on win7. And maybe another 15-20 seconds to load everything including all my startup stuff. Only minor annoyance is some of my shortcuts no longer work which is understandable. Tested FSX and no problems...loads so much faster. And the most important part is i did not have to re-install anything, steve d Win7 Ultimate x64 i7-2600k @4.8GHz Asus Sabertooth P67 Mushkin Redline 8GB EVGA GTX 570 SC Corsair Force GT 240GB SSD CoolerMaster SilentPro 1000W PS PMDG737NGX, PMDG747-400, REX2.0, GEX, UTX, MyTrafficX, EzDok

November 22, 201114 yr Author just did like I said in the first post. Copy OS plus all programfiles. Then after migration change the SSD to become your new boot drive. So from a registry perspective everything is still looking at the C drive.so far so good..and the software handles all the partition, alignment, etc and lets you pick and choose what to move besides OS. steve d Win7 Ultimate x64 i7-2600k @4.8GHz Asus Sabertooth P67 Mushkin Redline 8GB EVGA GTX 570 SC Corsair Force GT 240GB SSD CoolerMaster SilentPro 1000W PS PMDG737NGX, PMDG747-400, REX2.0, GEX, UTX, MyTrafficX, EzDok
November 22, 201114 yr Essentially these software pgrams just make a mirror of your old drive and then you replace new drive with old drive; from the computer's point of view its the "same". I have an SSD for by boot drive and a second SSD for FSX. Doug Orvis PP-ASEL-IA (USA), Based at KHEF Picture courtesy of Kyle Rodgers
November 22, 201114 yr Ahh never knew you could do this! Wish I had in the past with older non-fs related computers! Woah. Will bare this in mind. On another note is there much a performance or any boost from using a SSD ? Craig Harris 'NG Driver' for an airline whom shall not be named...

On another note is there much a performance or any boost from using a SSD ?not really from fps perspective that I can see so far...just loading times. Like an idiot I wasn't using a sata3 cable and I was using the Marvell storage port instead of the Intel one. My Read speeds were around 350MB/sec and now they're 500MB/sec so now it's even faster.should've bought this drive sooner. steve d Win7 Ultimate x64 i7-2600k @4.8GHz Asus Sabertooth P67 Mushkin Redline 8GB EVGA GTX 570 SC Corsair Force GT 240GB SSD CoolerMaster SilentPro 1000W PS PMDG737NGX, PMDG747-400, REX2.0, GEX, UTX, MyTrafficX, EzDok
November 22, 201114 yr Glad it worked out for you, and yeah, the ssd won't help framerates. Just load times & the occasional stutter associated with texture loading. Kenneth Weir My Saitek yoke mod i7 2600k @ 4.7 8GB Gskill CAS7 2x GTX580 SLI Surround + GT520 Accessory Win7x64
November 23, 201114 yr As Western Digital have hired frogmen to retrieve equipment from their factory in Thailand, I think SSD's (which are made elsewhere) are going to be very popular this Christmas... November 23, 201114 yr Hi Steve, I'm using an SSD for BOOT/FSX and I read about you saying you were using the Marvell storage port instead of Intel. Mine was installed in the computer when I bought it.When starting up I can see it's using the Marvell port. Can I change this easily? Did you change it in the BIOS? Would be nice to gain some speed!Ype Reitsma
November 23, 201114 yr Ype,Just plug the sata cable coming from that hard drive into a different port on the motherboard. Kenneth Weir My Saitek yoke mod i7 2600k @ 4.7 8GB Gskill CAS7 2x GTX580 SLI Surround + GT520 Accessory Win7x64
November 23, 201114 yr So there is no performance decrease having OS and FSX on same SSD? I have them on separate SATA drives and will buy 1 SSD instead of 2 if they can share same SSD
November 24, 201114 yr I have 2 SSD's one for OS and one for FSX, I also have 2 SATA Drives that I keep everything else, I use a external Drive to Backup my FSX drive, just in case I need to re-build my FSX. This configuration has worked well for me. Depending on your system, you should see a better performing FSX, not so much frame rates but everything else it makes a big difference. Simple advice, if you can afford it go SSD. John Nelson Retired UPS
November 24, 201114 yr Commercial Member Steve-Welcome to the SSD club.Last October I grew frustrated with how long it takes to load FSX (especially when debugging... it isn't uncommon to launch the simulation 50x each day..) and with some help from Ryan I settled on adding to SSDs to my development machine. We arm wrestled with it a bit- but finally got the boot sector onto one SSD and FSX onto another.Like you observed- I go from power on to a login screen in about 10 seconds...Reboots take about 18 seconds....But the best part is that launching the NGX in debug mode at Orbx PNW KRNT takes at MOST 18 seconds....That probably saved me a week or two of development time on the NGX.
