Around 7 seconds into the video, you can see the tailboom contact a support wire.

Sorry about having to put the link in a

box, but the silly forum software won't allow the "raw link" to be posted!

Lots of articles saying a heli has crashed.i know that.I want the link to the article Zach found explaining why it crashed. Its hard to say that it was boomstrike, from the video...the heli doesnt act right.Looks more of a main rotor strike..To me it looks like a main rotor struck something, dislodged the engine/gearbox - whitch the tail boom shaft is connected, bending the shaft and ultimatly breaking the tail off.Ive seen alot of heli crashes and usually with a boomstrike the pilot has some kind of reaction time..this poor fella didnt...its like ******* through him out the sky with the force it went down.Glad he hit concrete and not the water..cudda been fatal.

Does not look like the tail rotor strikes to me. Looks like the main rotor may have caught a wire because the vibration starts there. The tail boom just gets sheared off from the violence of the vibration. (or the main rotor cut it off like would happen in a low G pushover situation) A tail boom strike would have likely caused a yaw rate even in that short time before it hits the ground. (notice no yaw rate at all until tail boom falls off) Just me guessing like you though, so who knows /shrug.The seeming failure of the seat connection to the cockpit floor looks to happen a little too easily to me. Eurocopter may want to look into strengthening those bolts up.

You beat me to it. I was thinking the same thing Dave.

This is now the most expensive Christmas Tree we have ever put up. This one was being put up by Telecom, our Telephone Company, always seems they can never get anything right. I'm just glad the pilot is safe.It is amazing watching it in slow motion and seeing the vibrations ripple through the airframe. The designers must be analyzing this video and the wreck as it is not everyday you get an accident caught on camera like that. They get to see how their product held up in this incident.Cheers

I watched another view of the same scene on ABC's "Good Morning America." From this angle and an interview with the pilot, it appears that it was in fact a main rotor blade strike on one of the guy wires for the tower.Watching in slow motion, from this camera view we can see that the pilot was briefly ejected from the cockpit, but brought back inside at the last moment by the remaining belt of the harness. Here is some footage from the other camera, with several "replays" in various slow motion rates:http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/6023078/Chopper-crash-pilot-examines-wreckage

In Bill's link it appears that the ground assistant was trying to manage the line which was attached to the heli when it contacted the rotor??blink.png

yeah that exaclty what happen, 1min 40 you see him jump to grab the cable..whitch pulls it tight and over top the main rotor. What an impatient fool!http://www.youtube.c...b?blend=22&ob=5
Holy ****. That was close. Thanks for that link!I see what you mean. I'm not sure if it would have worked, regardless of the ground guy.

The pilot is really lucky to have held on to the cockpit of the helicopter, or else he could've fallen off and had much greater injuries. From this video

it looks like it was shot... wow.
