Running FSX on 2 monitors in Windows 7 x64

Featured Replies

I run FS9 on a system set up with two monitors. I mostly fly FS9 and have no problems there - when I go to full screen view with FS9 on my main monitor, I can still see the second monitor's desktop (and usually use that screen to follow my flight with FS Navigator). In FSX however, when I switch to Full Screen, the second monitor goes black, so I can no longer see my FS Widgets GMap that I use to follow where I am going. I can only see the second monitor's desktop when I am in windowed view - but the graphics in windowed view are poor, with rippling effects and less than perfect antialiasing. So a couple of questions: first, any ideas how I set up my FSX so that the 2nd. monitor doesn't black out with FSX in Full Screen mode. Second, what do people use in FSX to follow their flights and have some idea where they are going? The GMap programme would be OK if I could see it on the 2nd. screen, but maybe there are other options? I miss my FS Navigator in FSX, like so many others! Thanks for any help with this - as I say I don't use FSX much, but really want Aerosoft's AntarcticaX coming this week, so would like to sort this out.Martin

Hi,You cannot prevent the blackout but by running FSX in Windowed Mode. You should be able to adjust the second monitor through your GPU control panel software.

Unfortunately, if you want to run FSX with multiple monitors off of one computer you have no other choice but to run in Windowed Mode. When running FSX in Full Screen Mode all other monitors will go black. I happen to use EFB (Electronic Flight Bag). I am running off of one PC multi-monitored (Windowed Mode). I will at times during a flight change to Full Screen to get the benefits it offers graphically. EFB can also be run on another computer on the network. The next option would be to run GMap off a second PC.

Thanks. I have found a few posts re this meanwhile (via Google) and some people say that you can drag windows to the second monitor, but I haven't been able to make it work as yet - I think it only works with 'pop-up' windows within FSX, not for background programmes like GMap. I'll experiment a bit more but sounds as if I shall have to have FSX in windowed mode (another reason I prefer FS9, where that isn't necessary!).There is also a way to get FS Navigator to work with FSX if you use a 2nd. PC, but I don't have a 2nd. PC here to test that on.M.

If you drag the taskbar to the second monitor, close the FSX menu bar at the top of the screen, and maximize the main window, you almost have a 'full screen' view while in windowed mode. That way you can still use the other monitor for the popup panels and addon programs. All that remains at the top is the standard windows bar, and after a few minutes you wont even notice it.

Yes, that's true. I can auto-hide the taskbar instead of dragging it off the screen. The only problem is that if I am not in Full Screen mode the scenery wobbles around like jelly when I pan. I have added the line ForceFullScreenVSync=1 to the Graphics section of the FSX.cfg file but there is no difference. I already have Force Vertsync=on in my nVidia Inspector settings ("Common").Martin

From what I've found out is that in Windows Vista and 7 you cannot SPAN the desktop like you could in Windows XP. This is problem with the game showing up black on one screen. ATI with their software has a fix for this with a single GPU. NVidia cards have the same thing in nSurround, but you need at least 2 video cards.

I think the problem must be more with FSX, as in FS9, on the same PC, I don't have this problem at all.I don't think I bothered with 2 video cards when I ordered this PC as I knew FS didn't like SLI .. but I'll double-check that! Thanks,Martin

No, it is with all operating systems, graphics cards and utilities used.

What do people use in FSX to follow their flights and have some idea where they are going?
You could try using a moving map on your mobile phone using "Open Control"Demo here.

Q1.There is a utility that will allow you to run FSX on monitor 1 without blacking out monitor 2:FS-SIMtimizer.exeYou should have no trouble finding that utility on the web.Q2. I use PlanG. Plan-GV2.0.5.493.Pierre

"what do people use in FSX to follow their flights and have some idea where they are going? "I use FSCommander (pay), Blue Sky Moving Map (free), and FSWidgets (free browser edition)Commander gives you all the same info as FSX and also many other featuresBSMM gives you charts with your location overlayedWidgets lets you see a Google Earth map as you flyAll do different things and work great together.

I have added the line ForceFullScreenVSync=1 to the Graphics section of the FSX.cfg file but there is no difference. I already have Force Vertsync=on in my nVidia Inspector settings ("Common").
For vsync control in Windowed mode it should be:ForceWindowedVSync=1

"FS-SIMtimizer.exe"You are still in Windowed Mode but with a 1 pixel boarder.

Got me thinking. There is a way to embed web pages into fsx. Using the trike as a test, go to fsx directory\SimObjects\Airplanes\Aircreation_582SLIn there you will see a couple of web pages, I edited this one Aircreation582SL_ref.htmAt the top I added an iframe like this

<iframe width="100%" height="500px" src="http://www.fsopen.co.uk/maps/index2.php?HostID=3"></iframe>

Low and behold I have a moving map in fsx. See pic below.kneeboard2.jpgYou can drag this to your 2nd monitor. This might work for Open Control or other web enabled add ons. However, I think because it's running in the same process as fsx updates will be infrequent and might fail. Also, there is no way you can interact with the web page. So zoom in/out etc will not work.Probably not a viable option but thought I'd post here as your problem sparked the idea in my head!
