December 21, 201114 yr Commercial Member Mousewheel does function. It's a secondary control for the throttles. If it can be assigned to the throttles, it might be possible to assign to other things.
December 21, 201114 yr I am trying still to figure out how to make my collie hat on my Thrustmaster T1000 to pan around the cockpit like it does in FSX. I have assigned commands for it but still does not work. I have the J Rollan CRJ and as I can not get around the cockpit. Any help would be great. JeffG Jeffrey Gerbert
December 22, 201114 yr For the hat switch, forward view I used, "View: 3D cockpit command view". For the left and right I used the General commands on the far right, using the fast block, for the back switch instead of using a view i use the General: Tilt down, because I don't usually have to look back too much, but do quite often have to look down. I haven't found any way to use the diagonal or quarter views with the hat switch, but didn't worry about it as using those switches are a bit difficult to hit reliably with the CH yoke that I use. December 22, 201114 yr ok .. mousewheel for zoom functionality .. worth millions for Austin I hope you're joking.
December 22, 201114 yr I hope you're joking. Why? Many MSFS would switch to xplane if the UI and controls felt more familiar. So why do you hope its a joke?
December 22, 201114 yr Commercial Member Because the x plane community have become accustomed to how it is already. You're asking US to get used to something YOU are used to.

This way more folks buy XPX, and thus, ensuring its increased commercial success.
December 22, 201114 yr Tierborn,I'm sure if enough people voice their opinion on the user interface, Laminar will accommodate them. Granted, at first it is a bit confusing but nothing people who can learn to use complex aircraft in FSX or XPX can't learn.
December 22, 201114 yr Why? Many MSFS would switch to xplane if the UI and controls felt more familiar. So why do you hope its a joke?I find it extremely unlikely that adding mousewheel zoom would attract millions of dollars worth of new customers to X-Plane. It's not exactly a "make or break" feature. Besides, not everybody uses the mouse extensively in FSX. I never did. I always used the hatswitch to look around and keyboard to zoom. Only thing I used the mouse for was interacting with the cockpit, exactly like I do in X-Plane (only I use a rocker switch on my CH yoke to zoom rather than the keyboard). I doubt my experience is unique.

If Xplane could have functionality that could keep both camps happy .. it could certainly be worth millions in MSFS converts to XPX.
December 22, 201114 yr One of the consist complaints you hear regarding XPlane is the UI and the controls. If Xplane could have functionality that could keep both camps happy .. it could certainly be worth millions in MSFS converts to XPX.The complaints are primarily because it's different and not because it's necessarily difficult to use. If someone takes the time to learn their way around then I think they will find that X-Plane is, in fact, every bit as functional and easy to use as anything Microsoft has produced. The people who load up the demo for a few minutes and immediately start whining about the interface weren't really intent on giving X-Plane a fair shake in the first place, so I don't put much stock in their criticisms.Looking at this from another perspective, the reason Microsoft Flight Simulator has traditionally been the market leader in consumer flight sims is not because it's more functional and easier to use than the competition but because Microsoft has a lot more money to throw at marketing and distribution. Even if Austin turned X-Plane into a clone of FSX, it would still be far behind in terms of sales.
December 22, 201114 yr Hi all!I'm brand new to XPlane, and have been flying FS since the Commodore 64 days. I'm in love with XPlane now, but it's going to take time for me to set up the keys to my liking. It's just not as fluid in terms of key assignments/views/ATC control, etc as MS, and that's not a bad thing. Just takes time getting used to it! Here are my challenges right now:1) I don't know if I am missing something, but I am missing pop-ups of some instruments, most importantly NAV/COM switches, and autopilot. It's difficult for me to change frequencies (in 3d mouse mode), especially if the aircraft is bouncing around. If there are indeed pop-up's my apologies! Haven't found them yet. ; )2) I have the Saitek X45 and still have not found a way to fluidly look around the cockpit in 3D virtual mode, as I was able to do in MSFS. Not just look left, right, forward, etc but fluidly pan around the cockpit using the hat switch. This being said though, the sim is remarkable and so satisfying..visually and regarding the flight dynamics. Once I get the keys, etc set to my liking I know I'll be hooked.Bob
December 22, 201114 yr Hi Bob,A lot of people bring the hat switch functionality up. It might be important Laminar look at this request from it's user base.
