November 27, 201114 yr Hi,I beleave, one of the biggest problems for FSX users is to find the way to use the same keyboard/joystick assignments/functionality in x-plane as in FSX. Any help or guide from LR would be much appreciated and help a lot to bring more FSX users to X-Plane.Why don't we use this topic to discuss and find help on any such problems?Below is the problem that i have right now:What I'm trying to achive is to use mouse the same way as it works in FSX for camera movements in Virtual Cockpits. So, is it possible to setup it this way:You press and hold Space button on your keyboard and while you hold it, you can use mouse to view around in the Virtual Cockpit. One you release the Space button, your mouse will be working as usual wothout camera movements.Another option (even better) would be to use a mouse wheel button anstead of the Space. Is it possible in x-plane?Thank you,Dmitry.

November 27, 201114 yr Hey guys, I did a guide to the main settings pages in a recent blog post. Using the advanced controls and keys tabs, you should be able to do most. Eg I use v for screenshot, I use s to change ground speed for those 10 min flights Melbourne to Sydney! Simmo W, Melbourne, Ozhttp://www.youtube.com/user/id5556
November 29, 201114 yr Author It looks like it's not possible to assign a function to a button hold...At least, I could not figure it out. However, I've found an interesting PDF file "Help for MSFS users" that allows you to find the FSX function in X-Plane.The doc is for X-Plane 9, but I found it useful for v.10 also:http://www.x-plane.com/files/MSFS_XP_keys.pdf.zip
November 29, 201114 yr the most useful one would be to use the spacebar + mouse to change view in 3D cockpit ... along with scroll botton to zone in and out.

Moving the mouse will move the view. This assignment is changeable in the key settings. It could also be assigned to a joystick button.O (the letter) will freeze the pan for as long as the button is pressed.W returns to forward 2D view.
November 30, 201114 yr Author Shift+0 (zero) will do what SPACE does in FSX. Moving the mouse will move the view. This assignment is changeable in the key settings. It could also be assigned to a joystick button.O (the letter) will freeze the pan for as long as the button is pressed.W returns to forward 2D view. The problem is that this model requires too many actions. Let's say I'm in 747 Virtual Cockpit on approach when I need to quickly react to ATC instructions. So, in order to just turn off a switch, or press a button, I need:1. Remove my hand from the joystick and put it on the mouse (that's fine - nothing wrong with that :-) )2. Moving the mouse, find that switch and try to point the cursor to that switch. This part is the most tricky one. In x-plane, when you move the mouse the view is always changing and makes it difficult to point the cursor on the switch. In FSX you just release the Space key and the view become frozen and not moving anymore with the mouse, which makes the cursor pointing easier. I did not know about the O key (and did not try it yet), so I suspect it's supposes to provide the same functionality - freeze the view. So,3. Press and hold the O key to freeze the view. And now try to point the cursor to the switch. Often, it will require one more action - zoom the view as the switch can be too small. In FSX you use the mouse wheel to zoom in and out. In X-Plane we need to use keyboard for that. So,4. Press + or - keys to zoom. Not sure if I still need to hold the O key or what will happen if I release it (will I loose the view if I release it and my mouse moves?).5. Click on the switch. So, in FSX all these actions only require you to use the mouse and press/hold/release the single button (Space). In x-plane in addition to the mouse I need to use 3 more keys ( O, +, -) and probably remove my hand from the mouse to use the keyboard (to zoom) and then move it back to the mouse to click on the switch. It makes the use of the Virtual Cockpit very difficult especially when you need to do everything fast during this phase of the flight.Am I missing something? How do you guys use VC in x-plane? Is it possible to reprogram keys and mouse to use them the same way as in FSX?By the way, rotating the knobs in the default 747 even more frustrating - you need to move the mouse to rotate the knobs. If the mouse reaches the end of the screen, then move the mouse back to the knob and repeate the mouse move untill you reach the required heading/speed/alt. Takes too long time. But I hope the payware aircrafts use different methods for knobs, so it will not be an issue...Thanks,Dmitry.
December 21, 201114 yr I totally agree on that. It´s simply stupid not to utilze the mousewheel for knob-control or zoom and XP definately needs the FSX-like viewpoint option. It´s way to complicated and jumpy right now. Tried 5 different setups with hatswitch and mouse and keyboard but none works good. The FSX solution "hold and move", "release and manipulate" (via mousewheel) is much better than anything I could set up in XP.Why not adopt a smart solution??? Anyone able to write a tool for that??? At least for the hold and move action? Would be great since a good view-and-manipulating "system" is essential for having fun in the cockpit IMHO.... Flo B.
December 21, 201114 yr Umm..does the MAC mouse have a mousewheel? If not, this may be why it is overlooked as a feature in XP must exist for ALL platforms. The MAC may not support it natively. Aaron
December 21, 201114 yr Get a good joystick or yoke with an 8-way hatswitch to control your view. Problem solved.
December 21, 201114 yr Austin .. adding mouse functionality is worth millions in your pocket :(What are you talking about? X-Plane 10 does have mouse functionality.
December 21, 201114 yr A hat switch is really bad for panning around when you are used to a mouse. Some older macs will have a scroll wheel but they do support mice with scroll wheels so you can plug in any mouse with a scroll wheel in to a Mac. Macs starting a few years back come with a mighty mouse which have a scroll wheel except you rub your finger up and down the mouse, it's not a traditional mechanical scroll wheel but it is there.
