Quite simple. If it's Google buildings, which I think it is, it is copyright protected. Laminar could not include it in a package they plan to sell. However, if Simmo makes it (imports it from Google buildings into Blender and then exports it to X Plane), and uploads it for free, that's a different story.

Two minutes to populate the models in Blender.....A lifetime to get them textured. :)(Just kidding - I'm watching the thread in the scenery development forum with interest)

You ain't kidding... It's a slow and painful process texturing them objects in SketchUp..@Simmo - that's the Melbourne CBD? Awesome! It looks great. (I live in Melbourne as well :()

If it's anything like google maps, distribution of the material is illegal unless done through a google API.I'm not sure about 3D warehouse, but redistribution of other people's models, whether freeware or payware, could be trouble.By my understanding if something is copyright protected, it doesn't matter whether it's payware or freeware.

Most likely limited resources and other priorities.

So what we get then is "limited resources"That is true?I am getting it anyway I like new toys even if they are half baked.

I think it's a gross misrepresentation to describe X-Plane 10 as "half-baked".

Laminar are looking into importing the building data from Open Street Maps - if it works, it'll be inlcuded in an update to Xplane 10. So go into OSM and start adding buildings in your area. There is already a program for x-plane that does this - osm2xpl - google it to find the webpage - it's free.

The trouble with that is it would take forever to get it done. The only populated areas I have seen have come from GIS exports from local government. I don't know if my area will get done like this but from logging in to my cities GIS and looking about they do not have the house information, just the section outline. I just want to fly, not build. Actually, I build a lot of FS stuff but I dont want to build the buildings.

Ha, I love this place! Lots of discussion..No, it's not google, Lightplane was closest, it is using free OSM data. See today's blog post

So then if everyone puts buildings into OSM then all Xplane 10 users may get them soon. Ain't opensource just great :)Pete
